Buckleys coaching in the Grand Final

Under Clarko the hawks are 15-4 since 2014 in games under 6 points. That’s truly remarkable considering the rebuild they’ve undertaken since 2015. And if you’ve read Sam Mitchell’s book, you’d understand it ain’t luck, but great coaching and strategy that gets em those wins.
In fairness to Hawthorn they do have Burgoyne who is arguably the best clutch player of the past two decades.

To clarify my point somewhat. I’m not saying defend the lead for the next 3rd qtrs. I’m saying in red time, it’s ok to play the percentages, lock it down, play out the clock and make sure you don’t give up any points via unforced errors.

Go balls out all you want for the first 20 mins of a qtr. but you have to be able to read the room, know when momentum could shift and go into lock down mode.

In each of the 4 qtrs on GF day we coughed up points in red time cause they are coached to attack at all cost and have a pro risk approach to game day. It’s an approach that’s cost us plenty of games under 6 points since 2014 (3-10).

Take HFC for example. At times, they can smash teams by taking risks and then when it’s close or in red time they’ll lock down and defend a small lead time and again.

Great coaching and strategy I believe Collingwood did not have on GF day.
very good point. I think WC are red time specialists lately. I remember back to us beating Port when 2 goals down with 1.40 to go. Port imploded with the ball, they were still trying to push the envelope and score another goal. No team should lose a game 2 goals in front, 1.40 on the clock and in possession of the ball.

West Coast ball year didnt get rated no idea why i said all year they were clearly the second best team during the H&A season.

Very much this. All year it was and Richmond and the second best Victorian club (CAN MELBOURNE WIN IT, SURELY THEY CAN WIN IT! IT'S COLLINGWOODS TIME, WHAT A TURNAROUND!). Or whether the Giants could get their players back in time for a finals run. Or what the hell went wrong with Adelaide. Meanwhile West Coast just sitting there second on the ladder all year, the forgotten team, even though they won 10 in a row.

:eek:You know someone's pissed when they claim we get more attention from the Vic press. I recall a lot of delight when we gazed into the abyss around the bye.

I absolutely agree your lot deserved more respect through the season though. It's the nuffie Vic press, what you gonna do?

Lap it up. I loved the fact that no one in the East gave us a chance. Makes it all the sweeter when flogs like Robert Walls are shown to be the tools they are.

And it ain’t luck. Its good coaching. I’m not sure why pies fans can’t admit to Buckley’s failings.

Pies fans loved talking up Malthouse’s perceived failings incessantly. We all knew Malthouses blessing and curse was his love for the boundary and being accountable.

Compare the last five minutes of GF1 2010 to the last five minutes of 2018 GF. It’s chalk and cheese in regards to defensive accountability. No STK player left all on his lonesome at HFF that’s for ****ing sure.

And Malthouse would have gone off his **** about conceeding those red time goals, especially the one Shuey kicked before half time. Sheed has no opponent at the ball up. It’s unforgiveable to have a midfielder just sitting there at defensive 50 at a stoppage.

It is what it is, but most pies fans are blinded their love for Bucks the player and refuse to see his obvious failings as a coach

Interesting and I agree that WC have shown - this year, they're able to score in red time to either win or snuff out the oppo's chances................... wonder if any team would've beaten WC in the GF.

Still Collingwood lost the game through poor middle games from their elite players and not necessarily as a result of poor coaching (tactically) from the box............ the only way that Collingwood were going to win that game was to choke the opposition of F50 supply. That was the prediction, the Pies would win the middle and by extension the game. Did that all year ................ except against WC.
