When buddy kicked his 100th then left the field and returned, should he have used the interchange gates? he crossed the solid white line to leave the field, and returned via the same solid white line.

Is it not in the rules that if you leave the field without crossing the interchange gates you are not permitted to take any further part in the game?

Does anyone know the exact ruling?

It doesn't matter, they had to get him off as quickly and easily as possible and that is how it was done, don't turn a positive thing into a negative thing, you lost the game with or without him playing that second half anyway.

Not disputing any of that - just wanted clarification on the rule

Thats what happens when players kick 100 goals, They go down the race to rooms.
Not sure if you remember few yrs ago when Gehrig did it but the same was done.

The game didn't re-start.

Buddy wasn't replaced by another player.

The extension of what you are proposing is that any player who crosses the boundary line during the course of a game can't come back on.

Well it does not say any where in the rule book stop the game and escort a player off until he has done an interview with the broadcaster either. The rule says if a player leaves the field he must go thru the interchange gate otherwise not allowed to take further part in the game.
Why weren't the rest of the players allowed to go have a pie and a VB at the Cougar Bar?

i think that rule only applies when the player is unlikely to return (injured) and that a substitution is planned, because if what you have suggested is the case then players would be staying well clear of the boundary line in fear of crossing it!
