Bugging me for a long time regarding saints forward line setup.

4 man forward setup.

Voss main target.

If close enough to goal, look for Shwarze.

Gehrig = Retire.
Riewoldt = Roam wherever he likes.

Saints forward line always, always looks better with Voss up forward and Shwarze is a much likely type then Gehrig at FF. Let him learn the position.
This creates space for Milne rather then having a choked forward line which happens week after week and one of our rucks can drop forward to stretch opposition defenders for height.

With the extra 2 players, you can drop one back as a loose defender and the other (Riewoldt) can stay on the wing and play as an extra midfielder.


Face facts guys. Gehrig sucks and we are to Riewoldt focused. Voss and Shwarze can do the job just as well as the other 2 and it frees up Riewoldt to play an Adam Goodes type role which would benefit us greatly.

i agree with the riewoldt focused comment, but gehrig sucks...hes not very consistent but should still play in the forward line this yr, end of yr should retire. riewoldt should be free to lead up into the midfield

yeh good call, the only reason voss looks good when he goes up forward, shcwarze too, is cos he takes 3rd-4th best defenders, which arent usually good enough. if u put players like rutten, glass, michael, barry on him hed be lucky to scrape a few touches.

First of all, this year the only players looking capable of taking a contested mark in our forward line are Gehrig and Riewoldt. To take those two out and putting a GOP, a midget and a small defender in would kill the team.

Voss has been tried as a permanent forward before and it failed miserably. He is best suited to drifting forward occasionally and catching the opposition off guard. As a permanent forward he was just lost, and struggled to take a mark now that someone is trying to spoil him.

Schwarze (not Shwarze) is not good enough to play on the premier full-backs of the comp. He doesn't have a huge influence on the third backman, how do you think he'd do against the best?

And what is the point of having Milne isolated from the talls? Milne's job is to be at their feet when the ball comes to ground after a marking contest, not to wrestle with his opponent one-on-one.

HF: Riewoldt Harvey

Milne
FF: Gehrig Hamill

Goddard playing 65 out, getting the rebound from half-back/wing, then kicking long to the best option in the forward line, with Hamill leading up the boundary line, Riewoldt leading up the centre (30-50 out), Harvey providing a short option, and Gehrig leading from the goal square (Milney lurking around 20-30m away from the likely target, ready to swoop if it hits the ground.

That would mean...
Gehrig gets the best/strongest tall back
Riewoldt gets the fittest/fastest tall back
Hamill gets the third tall back
Milne gets the best small back
Harvey gets a defensive midfielder/second small back

Rather than...
Schwarze gets the best tall back
Milne gets the best small back
Voss gets the defensive midfielder/second small back
Ackland/Blake get the second tall back
The rest of the defenders hang back and block space

Lol Riewoldt is good at roaming but would he be sufficiantly good enough to cover having the worst forward line since West Coast.
