The era of forwards needing to kick bags to be of value is long gone. I think he makes the forward line function better just by being there.

these 2 points here.

1. check out the goalkicking list for the last 20 yrs and see how it has changed.
2. He plays this week and Clarkson will be scratching his head all day friday and saturday trying to work out who he has to put on him.

Exactly. Particularly with their outs. I honestly don't see how they can cover 3 genuine tall's.

You can't see it because they cant do it. - I hope we destroy this mob on Saturday night. I'd have butcher in my team this week. Like you I can't see them coping with 3 talls.

Schoenmakers v Schulz
Cheney v The Hoff
Stratton v Wingard

Monfries, Gray, (Butcher) v Duryea, Hodge, Burchall ????

Here's a good article about us getting the ball inside 50.........those defenders will get smashed on Saturday night if we just produce our season average. I'm not greedy i dont even want extras, season average is fine by me it will be more than enough.

Classic example of the Hawks against a very tall attack that sticks in my mind was the 2012 prelim against the Cows when AFAICT they had no one over 190cm in defence bar bloody Clangermakers. Between Tippett and Walker both kicking 4 each and Franklin kicking a heap of points they had a heap more shots than the cows but still nearly managed to drop the bloody game.

Butcher might get the chop at seasons end.

i'm not a fan of butcher at all. i like some of the things he does, but i think a 22 year old rated as highly as him as a jnr should be a lot more advanced, even with injuries. But i still wouldnt chop him. id suggest he has another full season to show if he can cut it. if at the same time next year he is still performing exactly the same, then he should be getting concerned.

chop? like his hair?? closest thing that will be getting the chop...
22 yrs old, hardly any depth in the position of tall forwards as is. Dare say he will be around 25 before the chop comes if nothing improves....
So strap yourself in and get comfortable, he will be around for some time yet!

This would be a good game to bring him in but who do we drop?

I think he should play out the majority of the year for the Maggies and get some consistency going. Less pressure to perform.

Then next year build on his consistency and force his way into our forward line. We must see something next year from him in the afl or shaw and Harvey will go by him in the pecking order.

It feels like the general consensus on Butch is that he's horrendously underperforming?

He's kicked 18 goals in 6 games! Actually, 5 games if you take out the game where he played with diarrhoea. That's just under 4 goals a game - which is a pretty damn good return. I think people are getting hung up on how and when he's kicking his goals and ignoring the fact that at least he's kicking a few goals every week. That's better than he's ever done at SANFL level, so it's obvious he's improving.

For what it's worth, the Port site listed him in our best players on the weekend. I'm interested to see how he shapes up in the SANFL report when it comes out this week.

Finally got around to watching the South game last night. Every week I hope he's made some improvement, but man, that ball drop makes me squirm in my seat (er...couch). It's just horrible. He took so many great grabs, managed to squeak a couple goals through but missed some absolute dollies that any mug out of the crowd could have kicked. I want him back in the team so badly for his work rate, competitiveness and his hands, but that kicking action...f me, we need a miracle to fix that.

i think Butcher would do better playing for a vic club ,just hope Redden can come good as we are going to need someone up there in the next couple of years.

Keep Butch on our list until there is absolutely no option, or he comes out publicly and declares he wants to go.

I could not bare the thought of him ripping it up for another club. I still think Butch will become an integral part of our team. He hasn't landed on an AFL list because he's good at golf.

So why would Butcher be better playing for a Vic club ?, contradictory post.

How long did it take The Hoff to be where he's at ? How long did it take Tredders ? Without sounding like a broken record, because its been said before so many times it takes KP players time to develop. Jack Watts for Melbourne was the butt of all jokes, he might laugh in the face of adversity and become a very good player. How long has it taken ?

The Butch may never be another Tredders or Wayne Carey, but if he becomes an important tall in our team we fill a void. Give him as long as it takes, until the club or him have had enough.

Butch won't get the chop at the end of this season, if he did, the club would have to pay out the 3rd year of his contract for no return, at worst he would be an outside chance of being put on the trade table, and even that option would be highly unlikely.

Hopefully his set shot kicking ( whether it is physical, mental, or a combination of both ) will come good, and he will become a valuable member of the Power line up.

Wow, some of you are gonna be pissed if he gets picked this week. I've only gotten through the first quarter of the South game so far, and he looks like he's starting to enjoy his footy again.

Butcher is the opposite of what tall AFL defenders want, he can clunk a mark and if he doesn't he can hunt like a starved dog. Yes his kicking is something he brings to the table, but what team would want the ball to ever hit the deck with Wingard, Monfries, Gray, White, Westhoff, Butcher, and Schulz in the 50?

The world might end tomorrow too. Won't happen.

Butcher is still double-grabbing too many marks. He took 5 marks yesterday. At the end I was standing I saw at least 2 relatively easy marks that were spoiled out of his grasp as he did not control the ball first time. There may have been a few at the other end too. In the last quarter I picked up on at least two marks that were second-grab when he should have taken them first time. Luckily his defender was running out of puff or those may have been spoiled too. From that it would seem the two main things that are a problem are kicking and marking. The marking seems more psychological as he takes marks easily at training when there is no implied pressure. Maybe he should play more up the field; as a full-forward the responsibility of his full-back is not really to beat him but to kill the contest and this makes it a lot more difficult to be a playmaker. Even Justin Westhoff finds it difficult to be effective when spending large parts of the game camped in the forward lines.

Butcher is also fairly lightweight for his height... 94/197 vs 94/199 for Westhoff... multiple interrupted pre seasons mean he doesn't have the tank Westhoff has developed nor the strength for much part time ruckwork, but maybe one more preseason and we experiment with him in a role more like the one Westhoff plays further up the ground. Not sure I've seen that happen in the SANFL yet, either way, plenty of time yet IMO given the timeline of other KPF/talls... 24 seems to be the age at which a lot of them hit an inflection point in their output and influence on the game.
