I'm spewing even harder now than when was dropped initially.

At the time he was borderline on form (despite the bleating at the time, he'd been very good in the Showdown), but required for structure. Now he absolutely can't be picked unless Schulz gets injured and we still have the same structural issues, and we still have the issue of not putting games into a KPF prospect.

Not to mention, a confidence player is probably pretty low on confidence.

He could have played in the Brisbane game, gotten in on the act and set himself up for a really good season with a bag in a game we were always going to win. Now he'll probably languish in the reserves until Schulz has his obligatory 2 weeks out with a ruptured spleen.

You'd assume Lonergan takes Schulz this week and one of Taylor or Rivers takes Westhoff, with the other playing loose. If Taylor gets the 21 disposals that Eric Mackenzie had because he was allowed to play loose, he'll destroy us.

^ this. Lack of structure almost cost us the match on saturday night. Over 20 more i50's for less scoring shots. Should never have been dropped but could just as easily been brought back last week for structural reasons after bagging 5 against the bays.

If Butcher was played in defence on the weekend then this indicates that Hinkley and Hocking have a plan for him ....
I think the plan was shouting in his ear at 1/4 time "Get your hands on the ball!" He was still given a lot of time on the ground after that (WWT game) but it varied from centre to defence, I don't know how much direction went into that. But he didn't come back forward other than that every player on the ground was in our forward zone for most of the final quarter.

So the week after kicking 5 goals he played one quarter up forward before being shifted back? Confidence building stuff

It's been mentioned before not to quote opposition board posts here. It's not fair to those posters as they are posting within the context of their board. Especially necro-posts.

It's enough to say Club X supporters thought off loading Player Y would be to their advantage when it happened.

That's fair Ford. I could go back to several of my own posts on this board that were critical of Schulz early on (or basically stated that he'd never amount to anything) to the same effect, but I think the point is made.

Never undermine yourself!

Honestly from the sounds of it his work rate during the North game was questionable. If that was the reason he was dropped its hard to complain. No player should be gifted games when they aren't doing the team thing.

If we were in the bad years I might agree that playing him is worth sacrificing the short term, but when we are second on the ladder its just not worth it.

I would agree with anyone who says the team looks better with him in the side, but the fact is the player that replaces him in the side is likely to have far more direct impact on the game, and as I hinted before it creates bad culture to gift games to players that flat out don't deserve them. Of course if he was only dropped for making some key mistakes, I am more sympathetic, but it honestly sounded to me like it was his attitude and effort more than anything that cost him his spot.

Way too early to be considering a switch to defence. It's still development year for him, I'm willing to give him as long as Schulz got when he burst into the scene (7 years).

Going by numbers alone, Butcher has shown some marginal improvement in terms of possessions and number of marks.

I think he needs to add some more size to his frame too. 197cm/93kg, I want him at 95-96 kg.

Totally agree.

You don't give players games just because they supposedly need more games into them, especially when their form is poor and they don't have a history of excellence.

We're pushing for a top four finish for gods sake, not a bottom four finish.

He needs to work his arse off to get back into the team, not given games to help him develop, that's what the reserves a for.

I'm firmly in the "play Butcher as a forward" camp. He's our second best key forward and while there's always the argument that he could be a better defender, I don't see any mitigating reason why we should try to change his position.

Should be showing more than this rubbish by now, give him till seasons end then see if he has a future with Port.
He is a better player than he is showing, could his problem be above the shoulders?

As a young chap I remember seeing Arnie punch Scott hodges in the face in a game against west at Richmond (Scotty wasn't playing well and Arnie was passing on a message from jack to fire him up - I reckon it worked)

Can we still do stuff like that?? ;)

I still think he'll come good. He needs to lift his work-rate, but he also needs confidence. KPF who are AFL-ready from when they are drafted are extremely rare.

Are we really getting that desperate with butch to put him down back....?

may be it is a way to get his confidence back

The only way we are going to learn is playing him week in, week out. Many KPF played as much as possible in their early seasons, despite their ups and their downs, well in to the teens to maximum 22 games a year. Butcher has never had more than 8 total in a season. Calls that we've already seen enough are ridiculous

I dont see how that would work though.....

If I was hired for a particular job and got shifted "sideways" it wouldnt build my confidence

It worked for Tim Evans
