This year is make or break for Butch.

There are no excuses now. He has had a full preseason for the first time in a number of years.

He played well against the Crows as the lead up forward.

However including the North game, it has all been downhill and his stats on Monday against the Eagles are simply not good enough.

It is up to Butch now. He can either work hard and force his way back into the team or he can go the other way and lose all confidence and that will be the last we see of him at AFL level.

I hope that Harvey is the answer long term to our key position stocks up forward.

Butcher is contracted to the end of 2015. He'll only go if we trade him out.

I'm okay with 2015. He's our next best tall after Sarge and Hoff. This will give time for Shaw and Harvey to develop as well as possibly drafting and/or trading another tall this year and developing.

At worst, Butcher's a stop gap between now and our next decent tall forward coming on. At best, he comes good and we're all laughing about some comments in this thread.

Thats what i meant, when his contracts up! if hes still performing like this i cant see hm staying around but i do hope he gets his shit together and proves us wrong.

Can i also ask what players were available at the time of selectiong Butcher with pick 12?

Here you go, pick 8 though.

2009 National Draft

It was the obvious call at that pick, can't blame Port for taking Butcher, even though some handy players went later.

It was absolutely the only call.

He was the bluechip KPF in his draft, who had been tipped to go top-2 before he was brought down by injury mid-year. Given Tredrea had what turned out to be a handful of games left and Schulz had just come on board for Mitch Farmer, had we overlooked Butcher the entire club should've been wound up.

Both Butcher and Moore were highly rated and the club and most supporters were pretty happy with the selections. With the benefit of hindsight I'm sure Fyfe and Gunston would be looking pretty good in our side right now though!

Moore should still turn out ok, but yeah, Fyfe would've been an awesome pickup. Gunston still would've left for Hawthorn though, leaving us down a KPF.

That draft was chocfull of excellent later picks and you can go through any draft and lament missing this player and that player, but realistically I would've preferred - and did at the time - we had taken Butcher with #8 and Talia with #9. Absolute no-brainer given the talent on offer and where our list was at the time.

Moore and Pittard, as good as they will be, were both bolters and one of the two would've been there with our next pick at #16.

If I could go back I would still draft Moore and Pittard, love them both and think they will end up being 150-200 gamers for Port.

Wouldn't draft Butch though, would go with Talia

If you're going to play the hindsight game you might want to take a peek at pick #20.

There's a few. Gimmethe Fyfe, Jake Carlisle, Sam Reid, Mitch Duncan.

Re Talia, our KPD depth chart at the time was:

1. Alipate Carlile (argue undersized)
2. Troy Chaplin (quality, but increasingly being used as a third tall)
3. Tobias Thurstans (ageing. depth.)
4. Michael Pettigrew (third tall, flakey)
5. Jackson Trengove (question mark long-term future, hamstring/surgical complication)

I mean, come on Choc.

Trading ourselves out of the post-first round to try and maximise the Burgoyne trade and get Jay Nash hurt.

Arguably we could have picked up Butcher; Moore or Pittard; Carlisle; and Vardy. Something like that anyway.

Very interesting the way Butch was used on the weekend and with our new structure can only assume it was in conjunction with the AFL coaching team ....
Well of course it was. Buddha is his coach in the SANFL and an assistant coach for him in the AFL. Plus on recent behaviour Hinkley was probably there somewhere too.

Edit: On re-reading this later it sounds too snappy, sorry.

I wandered by Alberton this morning and it looks like Butch has decided to address the real problem head on and has had a decent haircut. Now he looks like a footballer. :p Josh Carr was chatting with Butch and Robbie Gray. Wingard, Youngy and a few others were pinging shots at goal.

Mason Shaw still has plaster on his wrist but looked to really be slamming his hands on the ball so he must be confident the healing is going well.

Everyone knows Butch played his best games with the mop. It is the beard that has to go. Leave the hair long and freeeee
