Schulz's first 7 games in Port colours, before he broke out with a bag of 7 against North at the Dome

9.5dpg, 4.28mpg, 8 goals/7 behinds

Lucky Tredrea went down and we persisted with him, hey.

Not even a comparison. The difference between Butch and Schulz/Tredrea is that the latter could actually kick. A lot of players have had off-field issues and many have overcome them to become guns.
Butch unfortunately has had his fair share of injuries but no off-field issues AFAIK. And we all know that anyone can skew the data to try and prove a point but that doesn't show the entire picture. The fact is that by all accounts, he isn't even dominating the SANFL when he should be tearing it up in to pieces. Last 2 years have been a good platform for Butch to make a name of himself given how the team was performing and another KPF was desperately needed. But he didn't take his opportunity.
Do we persist with him for this year? I say yes give him a chance to show what he can do for the remainder of the season and I'd like him to play the rest of the games barring injuries. But he has to show something or else it isn't looking good for him.

I'm harsh on him I know however with where our season is at if Butch can start actually looking like a footballer again & put a few solid games together I'm all for him getting a crack.

Has Ken put the permanent marker through his name is the question

Did you really get it, or just stirring? How long did it knock you around for?

I got it. I was in hospital for a week. Spinal tap, nausea , vomiting, and with out a doubt the worst pain of my life. It probably took me a month before I felt ok again and maybe 3 months before I was back to the same strength I was before. Mostly water weight but when you can't eat for 4 days it really knocks your body around. I ended up getting a staff infection from the drip too, so that slowed me up a bit longer.

Yeah but he did take his opportunity. He was playing well when dropped in 2014 and 2015.

This "yeah but Schulz was different" shit is absolute garbage. Schulz was no different apart from the fact that he'd been given far more of a run to develop himself and yet was an absolute spud.

Part of me thinks, screw it, let's play him. We have nothing to lose and everything to gain. I wouldn't be saying this if we had any hope of salvaging this year because I still don't think he can actually play footy at something resembling AFL standard.

Part of me believes that playing him would be almost creeping into tanking territory though.

Let's hope the club has put the scenario to him in his mid-year review that if he doesn't step up in the SANFL over the next few games to warrant an AFL game he will be delisted at the end of the year..will make us see what he is made of, IMHO I don't think he has it in him

Sorry to hear that mate. So that probably wiped John out of being any good in August even though he played after a couple of weeks.

There are varying degrees of spudish performances I'm not sure Jay ever plummeted to the depths Butch has on occasion at Richmond... fair bit of clutching going on here
Schulz had plenty of shit games for Richmond, but he was persisted with so we didn't have months on end of discussing and analysing his few performances. Remember Richmond fans were very happy to receive Mitch Farmer for him.

If Butcher had been picked last year against Brisbane, as he absolutely should have been, there would have been very little discussion about his poor performance in the North game as it would be one match in a long season, just as there has been very little discussion about all the other players who had poor games in that match.

We don't have enough to go on because he hasn't been given an adequate run in the side like Kane Mitchell has. We have a sample size of 4 games at AFL level in 2 years. He's been pretty good overall in those games.

Schulz was such a spud that we took him. Let's see who wants butcher at year end

It'll be another Mitch Banner. "Omg we delisted Banner, he's gonna star for another club just you wait". *does nothing*. "Well, we didnt play him enough so we cost him his career"

I was happy to have Butch 'earn' his spot in the team half a dozen weeks ago but now with our season effectively in ruin, what do we have to lose by giving him a 10 week block to make or break his career post-bye? We have a desperate need to develop a key position forward and despite all of his ups and downs everyone here has seen what Butch is capable of at his best. Tell him that he's got 10 weeks no matter how many kicks he gets, get Schulz up the ground and out of his way and make him own the forward line.

I am not a huge Butcher fan but I would go along with that. If Butcher got the last ten games he would at least prove if he had it one way or the other. If he fires we are all happy if he doesn't he will have had 30+ games to prove his worth. My only reservation is we already know Butcher cannot kick to save his life but as you post TeeKray what have we got to lose?

The alternative is to keep playing Butcher in defence in the SANFL. From the bits I have seen of him in defence he looks good when he runs straight ahead and his kicking even looks better. Maybe an extended go in defence in the SANFL will boost his confidence and earn him a twelve month contract extension?

I suspect that Butcher's cards may be marked as Hinkley has said little about him lately and after a couple of games at the start of 2014 and one game this year he has not be recalled. You have to think the brains trust had a quick look in 2014 and again this year and were not convinced.

I would hate to delist Butcher and have some enterprising outfit pick him up, play him at CHB and have him star.

I rated Banner, back in the day. If it means anything at all he was probably one of our best during the combined losses of 303 points in just 2 games of footy in 2011. And he was certainly worthy of playing AFL in 2012 :(

But...would have definitely been better if we took Rory Sloane instead.

it can go eitther way. mitch Banner is in one column...Giles, Gilham, Patful are among the names in the other. I personally think he will be added to the mitch banner / adam thomson column. time will tell

The same Mitch Banner who registered 21 disposals & 2 goals in what was to that point, literally the worst performance in Port Adelaide's 141-year history?

The same Mitch Banner who had 24 disposals & 3 goals in a 10-goal defeat to the Western Bulldogs in front of seven people?

The same Mitch Banner who had 21 disposals & a goal in the Spoondodgers Bowl at Adelaide Oval?

And we delisted him and kept on Cam Hitchock. ****ing lol.

Not that many people saying Andrew Moore is building a game.
I'm hoping the Magpies line up as named this week with Butch at full forward. It will say the club has just tried to get his confidence up letting him run around were ever over the past few weeks. Hopefully he kicks 4 or 5 to justify the suggestion people are making he has something to offer.
im hoping he starts down back, its the last chance he has of saving his career, played better v west down back, still snuck forward and kicked a goal in the third... and our forwardline looked much better when he was down back....

And after being frozen out of that great Port Adelaide side of 2012 - who could forget Simon Phillips' stellar 6-disposal performance against Fremantle after being worst on ground for Norwood the previous week? - Banner found himself at South Fremantle in 2013 where his statline reads,

532 disposals @ 26.6pg
123 marks @ 6.15pg
33 goals @ 1.65pg

Now do you take a chance on a mature-aged 23/24yo who couldn't even get into the Port side that was beaten by GWS!!111111? Probably not.

By all means cite your Adam MacDougalls, Lewis Johnstons and Nick Gills, but Mitch Banner is the ultimate example of a career we well and truly snuffed out.

Just will never play AFL as a defender. It just takes the pressure off him. I really want him lining up forward. Pods should be someone Butch runs off and at Sanfl defenders don't get back that hard he should find space and he should be our obvious go to forward. Kick a bag and become relevant again.

unless there was something behind scenes i didn't know, banner delisting was the dumbest thing at the time.

The same Daniel Stewart that took 4 contested marks and kicked 4 goals against Richmond in a near bog effort.

The same Daniel Stewart that took 3 contested marks and kicked 3 goals againsy Sydney in a premiership year. Sydney!

Just about every player has these highlights. I cant think of a player in recent times that weve let go who has bitten us
