Ken has always been hesitant at bringing in talls, though. He also drops them after they've given one poor performance.

He took to long to bring in Hombsch in 2013.
He took bloody forever to bring in Clurey and only did because Carlile can't get on the park.
We never saw Mason Shaw play a game.
Dougal played the first Showdown and was dropped after the whole team were awful.

Now compare the opportunities given to those players to the ones given to Kane Mitchell, Jake Neade and Sam Gray.

Butcher should have played earlier than he did in 2015. He should've certainly played earlier in 2016.
Everyone without their head up their ass can see that we play better with two talls and Westhoff free to roam. If we never get to see Dixon and Butch play together I'll be bloody livid.

Horrible logic. Jeremy Cameron had less touches, less marks, less goals and less scoring attempts against the Lions two weeks ago than Butch did last night. The week before that, Tom Lynch (Suns) booted 5 straight but didn't touch the leather anywhere near as much as Johnny did nor have as much of an influence around the ground. Yes, Brisbane are a woeful side and Butch is perennially inconsistent (which the club can shoulder most of the blame for, imo), but tonight he put in a performance on par with the best KPFs in the game.

For perspective: in four years at the club, Kane Mitchell has played more games for us than Butch has in his entire career, yet has not played a single game where his output was even remotely close to that of Butcher's tonight.

Using AFL games as a relative estimate of experience, John is still a second-year player. If a legitimate, 20-year-old, second-year player had put in a performance like that, people on here would be losing their ******* minds.
Much like they would if a second game player kicked six goals from six kicks and then backed up in his third game with a number of towering marks and four straight.
Our expectations of Butcher were always over the top too soon.?We now need to show the guy some faith for an extended period and back him in at the highest level.

I am impressed with your intimate coaching knowledge and expertise, be sure to apply for any available positions next year.

The thing I found most encouraging was that he stuffed up a few times early but didn't drop his head. Kept working hard and put together a great game.
This. The positive reinforcement he should get from the hard running and repeat efforts he showed will help his game no end. He embraced the opportunity - if you add in the pass to Ebert and long bomb shot on goal that AhChee marked, he had 8 opportunities to kick goals. That's a big game right there. The more he kicks the bigger his confidence will grow. Give yourself shots at goal Butch. Just keep presenting and putting yourself in those positions to test your goal kicking.

Derm actually picked up on a good point last night. A ball was coming towards Butcher but he allowed Westhoff to cut in - he should have been assertive and taken the chance. Butch needs to become assertive forget about any pecking order.
Love Butch but he still needs a big dose of self belief and desire.

I think that's what holds him back more than anything. Too much of a nice, shy, gentle giant. He needs to believe he is the main man and actually play some selfish footy to get the best out of himself.

I loved the two snap goals because he showed enormous initiative.

I'd rather that Butcher, even if he sprays a few, then the one who passes off 25m from goal or lets Westhoff take his slice of the cake.

I don't need personal experience to have an opinion. I've got political opinions too, doesn't mean I wanna get involved in politics.

I just wanna see blokes be given the same opportunities as some of the others.

It doesn't help when Wingard burn't him badly early 2nd qtr, choosing to ignore an open Butch 15m out in front
to instead have a snap with his wrong foot and miss btw! Just finished watching the replay and Butch's work
up the ground and his assists very impressive. Been in your corner for a long time Butch and really happy for you.
Back it up next week m8.
Well done Paul Stewart on 100 games.
Carn the Maggies at Alberton this arvo.

When we were up by plenty and butcher had a set shot. I was a bit pissed off when polec and pittard asked for the handball. They should have been like "you got this butch".

Post needs more Karl Amon

Other than that I agree

Smaller players get more opportunities because there are more positions on the field for smaller players and as their roles become more specialised those very specific type of players will get more chances. Also, the coaches may be looking for something different in terms of performance than we are.

Butch gave a bit of everything last night, saw himself as the go to key forward and played accordingly. He would have done exactly as the coaches wanted. Let's hope he can do it again so he doesn't risk being pilloried by the same self-appointed experts who are now praising him.

Do you think he could've should've got a shot before now though Ford?

I would've played him a couple of weeks ago, either along with Schulz or instead of, but probably not before then. He was starting to stay in games by then. It's always been his ability to stay in a game that concerned me. He can disappear for long stretches. He's out there but completely uninvolved. He's getting more involved in games and that performance last night was probably the best I've seen from him. Kudos to the coaching staff for giving him the responsibility.

Butch's career was in the same place it is now in round 3 2014 when he was dropped for Sam Gray before a 113 point win against Brisbane at home, where Brisbane had lost all of their key defenders.

Sam Gray kicked 3 that day iirc.

This game could have happened 2.5 seasons ago. This could have happened before we traded in Dixon and before Schulz's kamikaze style started to catch up with him.

He went on to lead the Ken Farmer for the first half of 2014 and our coaching group absolutely blew a purple patch of form from a KPF we sorely needed to come on.

We absolutely didn't need to wait until now. The Brisbane game in round 4 2014 was the obvious time to back him in and keep him there. He was ready enough ages ago if the coaches wanted to back him in and accept that KPFs take time and nurturing. Instead we got 65 cumulative games from Kane Mitchell and Sam Gray.

I'd agree I would have given Schulz more time with the pies butch was the logical choice to me

With list management decisions made last season, Schulz's body concerns and Howard's ACL I think we almost have no choice but to retain him now where are we gonna find KP depth with the right age demographic who can offer more?

Play him and let's figure out where he can add most value because I can't see him not being there next season

Nah. Just another arseh*le with an opinion, like everybody on this board. You could say I lie somewhere between PAFC66's level of pessimism and Janus' level of drinking Ken's bathwater.

To be fair grey has shown he can make it as a depth mid not a forward pocket tho
