you see byrnes leading out of the goal square and taking overhead or contested marks moron? that was my point...they are not similar players, therefore, gamble out and byrnes in is not "like for like" by the selection commitee

moron? settle down champ. And yes, on occassion Byrnes does lead and mark, as do Chapman, Ablett, Stokes.....
I don't agree that Gamble is a small, rather a mid sized forward like SJ. The discussion re: like for like is more in regards to replacing a forward with a midfielder etc, so Byrnes in and Gamble out is like for like, but with a slightly different plan for the forward line. Byrnes out and Prismall in leaves the team a forward short, or plays a midfielder out of position.
How about you leave the insults out next time and just discuss the issue?
Gamble is like Russell Robertson in his style of play, I feel (though hopefully a little more consistent). Not tall, but with a huge leap and ability to take a speccy.Medium-tall I'd have called it.
Dropping either Byrnes or Varcoe for him would leave us top-heavy up forward.
I'm starting to notice a lot of people on here don't take much notice of what the players actually do on the field, instead they follow general perceptions based on their size, speed and a couple of highlight packages in the media.
Byrnes has been playing, this year and last year, as a small forward that leads out and takes marks on the HFF just outside the fifty. If the kick goes over his head towards the taller forwards, he turns around and becomes the roving forward.
To describe what Gamble does, read the above but replace Byrnes with Gamble and just outside fifty with just inside fifty.
It was a like for like decision.
I really like Gamble, but I've just got that weird feeling you get sometimes when you feel more comfortable with one player playing than the other.
Talent wise Gamble is streaks ahead of Byrnes, but Byrnes just seems to care more, and while Gamble has shown glimpses of F50 pressure (see Richmond) Shannon just seems better at it. Obviously Varcoe is ahead of both them in that aspect, but I really feel comfortable when Byrnes plays.
If Chapman were to come back next week, I'd say Varcoe would go for the sheer coaching policy of making sure players don't play just one game before being dropped.
This year, I think this is what our best side looks like, without Egan:
B: J.Hunt M.Scarlett T.Harley
HB: A.Mackie D.Milburn D.Wojcinski
C: J.Corey C.Ling J.Selwood
HF: M.Stokes P.Chapman J.Kelly
F: T.Hawkins C.Mooney S.Johnson
R: B.Ottens J.Bartel G.Ablett
Int: M.Blake C.Enright M.Rooke T.Lonergan
Emg: S.Byrnes T.Varcoe H.Taylor
The forward line might look stupid to you, but Hawkins and Mooney do their best work out of the goalsquare. Who says you need a big bloke at half forward to link up and deliver in when you've got Chapman, Kelly, Stokes and potentially Byrnes and Gamble doing the exact same job? Chapman has shown how good he is at bombing it in, and if the midfield kick goes directly to the goalsquare, these small blokes turn around and become the rovers. Makes sense to me.

Agreed with both coaches, thought he was good. Problem for Byrnes is everyone on here thinks he is shit so they highlight his mistakes, ignoring that all players miss targets, cough it up and make poor decisions at times. Okay in the past Byrnes has done it more than most but last weekend wasnt one of those times.
Played well, hope he keeps it up as he comes across as a good bloke who loves his footy and the club. No idea why though with how the fans treat him!
