Byrnes performance against Carlton

you see byrnes leading out of the goal square and taking overhead or contested marks moron? that was my point...they are not similar players, therefore, gamble out and byrnes in is not "like for like" by the selection commitee

moron? settle down champ. And yes, on occassion Byrnes does lead and mark, as do Chapman, Ablett, Stokes.....

I don't agree that Gamble is a small, rather a mid sized forward like SJ. The discussion re: like for like is more in regards to replacing a forward with a midfielder etc, so Byrnes in and Gamble out is like for like, but with a slightly different plan for the forward line. Byrnes out and Prismall in leaves the team a forward short, or plays a midfielder out of position.

How about you leave the insults out next time and just discuss the issue?

I'm starting to notice a lot of people on here don't take much notice of what the players actually do on the field, instead they follow general perceptions based on their size, speed and a couple of highlight packages in the media.

Byrnes has been playing, this year and last year, as a small forward that leads out and takes marks on the HFF just outside the fifty. If the kick goes over his head towards the taller forwards, he turns around and becomes the roving forward.

To describe what Gamble does, read the above but replace Byrnes with Gamble and just outside fifty with just inside fifty.

It was a like for like decision.

I really like Gamble, but I've just got that weird feeling you get sometimes when you feel more comfortable with one player playing than the other.

Talent wise Gamble is streaks ahead of Byrnes, but Byrnes just seems to care more, and while Gamble has shown glimpses of F50 pressure (see Richmond) Shannon just seems better at it. Obviously Varcoe is ahead of both them in that aspect, but I really feel comfortable when Byrnes plays.

If Chapman were to come back next week, I'd say Varcoe would go for the sheer coaching policy of making sure players don't play just one game before being dropped.

This year, I think this is what our best side looks like, without Egan:

B: J.Hunt M.Scarlett T.Harley
HB: A.Mackie D.Milburn D.Wojcinski
C: J.Corey C.Ling J.Selwood
HF: M.Stokes P.Chapman J.Kelly
F: T.Hawkins C.Mooney S.Johnson
R: B.Ottens J.Bartel G.Ablett
Int: M.Blake C.Enright M.Rooke T.Lonergan
Emg: S.Byrnes T.Varcoe H.Taylor

The forward line might look stupid to you, but Hawkins and Mooney do their best work out of the goalsquare. Who says you need a big bloke at half forward to link up and deliver in when you've got Chapman, Kelly, Stokes and potentially Byrnes and Gamble doing the exact same job? Chapman has shown how good he is at bombing it in, and if the midfield kick goes directly to the goalsquare, these small blokes turn around and become the rovers. Makes sense to me.

yep that is fair enough sorry mate, i interpreted your post as somewhat sarcastic and responded in kind.

put simply byrnes is in the side for the pace he brings and his work ethic/determination etc. and he played well enough saturday night, but simply too many disposal errors. not sure about his natural footy smarts/decision making and so forth.

people place prissy as a one dimensional midfielder which is not true, he could play byrnes' role comfortably, without his dash, but with a dramatic increase in disposal and decision making

Very close to our best side!

This how they generally line up on match day!:thumbsu:

looks pretty good to me...you've obviously left out taylor for team balance, but id have him in instead of lonergan or perhaps hawkins on current form

Medium-tall I'd have called it.

Dropping either Byrnes or Varcoe for him would leave us top-heavy up forward.
Gamble is like Russell Robertson in his style of play, I feel (though hopefully a little more consistent). Not tall, but with a huge leap and ability to take a speccy.

Just to get back to hammering Byrnes for a second (or maybe it should be Varcoe from memory)......when a bloke is so one-sided with his disposals, why would you cut across goal to the right hand side?

He made great position and used his pace, but was never going to make it back around to his left foot, and got run down because he wasn't confident to use the right.

That's frustrating. If he can somehow get some skill on the right, he'll become a much better player overnight. Look at Didak - you know he'll go to his left if he can, but he's now got the skill to use the right from time to time, which means he gets to back back to his left - because they have to respect his ride side. A couple of years ago, you didn't have to and he was less dangerous.

OK....I'll be the sucker to say it...

I thought Byrnes was in our top 6 or 7 players against Carlton. He wins the ball, makes mistakes...but in doing so he's not on his own.

When he plays well, we look quick and we rack up the possessions. It's always moving forward.

was interesting that thompson came out and said that their policy was to not drop players after only one game. am sure tenace and prismall fans would have noticed that comment.

hate to say it but i prefer byrnes over gamble too. byrnes gives 110 per cent but has to eliminate his frustrating errors. for every 4 good things he does he follows up with 2 stupid things. gamble doesnt get into the play enough

I thought he had a good game and deserves to retain his place.
His kicking at goal is my biggest frustration, he is unreliable, but, the whole team had the yips against Carlton, running shots, set shots, didn't matter, no-one could kick goals!

Shannon played in a premiership for the Cats, and that makes him a hero in my book, one of 22 whose names will live long in memory and honour.

He's young, quick, tenacious, all good qualities. He makes mistakes, he's not alone.
Sadly for Shannon, he's the one Geelong fans love to pick on, sometimes with cause, but many times almost out of habit.

Gamble started well but went off the boil a little.
Hawkins seems to be struggling, I hope he doesn't lose confidence.
Varcoe looked better than late last year when he just couldn't get the ball, but that moustache has to go!!:D

Interesting to note that Shannon got 1 vote in the Coaches Association Player of the Year award as shown on Footy Classified.

Geelong v Carlton
Saturday May 31, 2008
9 - Steve Johnson
9 - Gary Ablett
4 - Joel Corey
4 - Mathew Stokes
3 - Andrew Mackie
1 - Shannon Byrnes

So either Bomber or Brett Ratten thought he played good.
I agree with them...

Agreed with both coaches, thought he was good. Problem for Byrnes is everyone on here thinks he is shit so they highlight his mistakes, ignoring that all players miss targets, cough it up and make poor decisions at times. Okay in the past Byrnes has done it more than most but last weekend wasnt one of those times.

Played well, hope he keeps it up as he comes across as a good bloke who loves his footy and the club. No idea why though with how the fans treat him!

he did play arguably one of his best games for the cats that i have seen, and if he could nail a set shot could have 5 or 6 goals.

his errors are multiplied moreso coz they are so silly, like when he played on in the first quarter and ran straight into an opposition player.
