Byrnes v Stokes

The talk is that these two are pretty much playing for the one spot. On todays performance, i found it hard to pick one over the other. Just interested in seeing what other peoples thoughts are on who they'd have in the team (or maybe even both)!

yeh tend to agree that Stokes is a better player (maybe a little bit biased cos he is a Darwin boy too). in saying that i couldnt fault byrnes today. imo his pace was really telling against richmond and we have been criticised in the past for lacking a bit of zip thru the middle. dunno whether we can accommondate two players that small in the same team tho. it will be interesting to see how they go in the remainder of the preseason

Stokes over Byrnes on today's performance. Byrnes played well though and it's good to have pressure on a player for their spot (unlike last season). Also good to have cover for players like Chapman. I think there is room for both players regardless. Either on opposite wings or Stokes playing as a rover and Byrnes running a defender around as a small forward option.

yup stokes has better skills (foot and hand) and also applies alot of defensive pressure. Quite strong overhead aswell for his size.

Stokesy for me... sorry Eliiiiza! Don't get me wrong Byrnes is good and he can cope at snr level. Stokes has plenty to learn and more potential in my view. With Stokes gaining more experience I think Byrnes will be struggling for a spot. It's good that they have a bit of a competition happening, means we should get the very best out of both players.

Stokes..end of discussion...to add to this, my mate was telling me how his cousin met Byrnes in a nightclub and Byrnes introduced himself as "Gday, Shannon Byrnes, Geelong Football Club", wherein my mates cousin replied "yeah Geelong Football Club VFL team"!!! After which Byrnes pushed him in the chest and walked away disgusted...

Stokes by a long long way. With guys like Selwood and Djerkurra coming onto the list Byrnes will find himself very close to getting delisted imo.

Stokes is by far the better of the two. Brynes looks inpressive with his speed but Stokes has so much more

Surely you are kidding. Ronnie Burns and Stokes have nothing in common. Stokes plays the game like it is his last, constantly chasing down opponents and harrassing. I doubt Ronnie did that at all in his career.

Ronnie was a good player for us, but IMO is no where near Stokes in the passion department, which shows greatly on the ground.

The difference between Byrnes and Stokes is another thing. Shannon is just too inconsistant at the moment, plus he has no right foot at all. When they put him on his wrong side he cannot dispose of the ball effectively. Stokes is just a livewire, he is exactly what we need on our forward line.

I'd hate to agree, but Stokes.

Shannon does work hard for the ball, but ends up turning it over. Frustrating as ********.

Apart from pushing Stokes for his spot? He's maturing, he's only 20 FFS.

Imagine if the Roos had held onto Mooney at 20. Or if we'd let him go before 2004. Based on his performance against Richmond and his experience I don't think your comment is fair.
