I was at the game & watched the replay also (yes I’m a sucker for punishment). I don’t think the conditions are suited to him as you need a strong body over the ball which we know he does not have yet. He played 92% of the game today which is a little more then normal & his efficiency was 5% above his average but this could be because he got a lot less of the ball then normal but if we take the wet conditions into account it usually lowers a players disposal efficiency.

Pros:

- His second contests were good, he didn’t win a lot of the hard ball but he kept giving a contest after the ball went to ground.
- Morton read the ball well which enabled him to take a few of his uncontested marks in front of the pack & cut off the ball.

Cons:

- Not strong enough for wet weather football but he is still young & this will be addressed over the next 2-3 pre seasons.

Does he keep his spot?

Yes.

I didn’t see a lot from Cale this week, it would have been his worst game since I started reviewing his games. His play seemed to be disjointed coming in & out of the game but then again so was the whole team’s effort.

Pros:

- Not a lot but, I can never question his endeavor, he wants the ball & tries to get to as many contest as possible but just didn’t put it together this week.

- At least when he has a down game it is not a complete shocker.

Cons:

- 11 of 14 possessions (around 80%) we handballs which is not bad if your Garry Jnr because the players he gives it to will use it well but he needed to look further up the field this week to see if there were any other options (seeing we pushed back a bit there probably was not options).
- Shorts still look about 4 sizes to big.

Does he keep his spot?

Yes, his game does not warrant him being dropped but he needs to lift after this effort.

Cale played an ok game this week gathering 22 possessions.

Pros:

- Pushed forward more then normal having 4 inside 50’s a goal & 2 score assists.
- Reading of the play at times was good
- He is always in space & presenting as an option which is exactly what we need at the moment as most of our players are so indecisive so at least when they finally get called to play on in the back half he will make himself available to receive the ball.

Cons:

- The team as a whole sucked this week so he was part of an abominable performance.
- It would be good if he laid a tackle once in a while he has averaged a little over on a game this year & has dropped off over the last few weeks (averaged 1 a game over the last 5 games).

- His output & intensity seems to have dropped along with the rest of the team over the last 3 games.

Does he keep his spot?

Yes, I don’t see any reason to drop him & realistically who can fill in for him?

Its incredible how quickly we have become used to 20+ possession games from Cale, no-one even bats an eyelid now.

Has dropped off in the last few weeks, but he wouldn't be alone.

Interesting Info

Distance covered: 13.1km
Top Speed: 27kph

Cale played a quiet game possession wise but played a bit of a different type of game for him starting in the middle at times during the game. He also covered a lot of ground & traveled at around 13 km (the only one to travel more for Melbourne was Grimes who did over 14 km) for the game but his top pace was 27kph which is not fast (compared again with Grimes who got up to 33kph).

Pros:

- Played in the centre a bit which will be good experience for him
- Season high of four tackles this week, go Cale.

- No clangers

Cons:

- A little quiet possession wise again moved well around the field.

Does he keep his spot?

Cale spent a lot less time than normal on the ground this wee (72%) usually mid to high 80’s but still manager to gather 22 disposals. Again he had a couple of inside 50’s so is still pushing a little further up the ground.

Pros:

- Good tackle count again (5) which shows more accountability & pressure on the ball carrier from him.
- Contested possessions was 6 so over a quarter of his possessions was won in a contest.

Cons:

- Didn’t see any negatives in his game today it was a solid performance from him.

Does he keep his spot?

Yes.

I loved that big contested mark.

I want to see him more around the wing and half forward area where he can use that long kick to his advantage. We want opposition fullbacks to shit themselves with Bate, Morton and Sylvia kicking it long with fear of Jurrah jumping on their heads!

I liked cale's game this week. Seemed to go a lot harder at the ball and saw him stick some solid tackles which was good.

Also enjoyed him going back with the flight in defence. Keep it up Cale :thumbsu:

As I have mentioned Cale has pushed up the ground further then normal in recent times & went as far forward as possible by playing out of the goal square for some of the game. His ability to play whatever role he is assigned gives credit to his versatility & ability to adapt. I don’t see him as a long term proposition playing out of the goal square but he may be able to develop into a lead up player/midfielder similar to the role that Pavlich has been doing this year as he has the aerobic capacity to do it.

Pros:

- 3 goals for someone who has played most of the season playing off half back & as a lose man to be able to go forward & do that was great to see.
- Contested possessions were 5 (almost 1/3) & 2 contested marks which he turned into goals.

Cons:

- Can’t fault his game, especially when he went forward.

Does he keep his spot?

Yes, no doubt.

Cale moved down back again this week & played a great game on Goodes limiting him to 17 disposals almost all of them outside the 50 meter arc, no goals & a lot of those possessions were gained when he left Morton as a lose an in defense & pushed into the back half of the ground. I think this was a great learning game for Cale & will continue to progress his already impressive development. Cale did not have a huge impact statistics wise but did the small things well, gathering the equal most on percenters on the ground with Rivers, he also had three rebound 50’s for the game.

Pros:

- Efficiency was at 90% & all of his 10 disposals were by foot so only one disposal was off the mark.
- Contested possessions were 4 & most were against Goodes which was a standout for him.
- Played tight on Goodes didn’t allow him to get much of the ball in damaging positions.
- 90% of game time was good to see but he did less running the usual

Cons:

- Dropped off in tackles again this week with a big fat zero.

- Got a lot less of the ball but both points are directly related to the role he was assigned.

Does he keep his spot?

Yes, Mr. Versatility keeps his spot.

He's showed a lot of maturity in his new positions the last few weeks. Let's hope we don't give him the royal screw over in positioning (ala Miller and Dunn) but he's got more talent than those two combined anyway.

Morton Mail !!

Pleased and relieved

By Cale Morton 8:11 PM Tue 11 August, 2009
AFTER a couple of seasons with Melbourne, it's great to know that I will have at least a further two years with the club.
This is great news for me personally, as I can see the positives ahead for the footy club – and there are definitely exciting times ahead.
Already we have a great young list, which the club has assembled over the past two years.
It was something I recognised and I really want to be part of this club going forward – hopefully we can have success down the track.
This was my first contract extension and it was a straight forward process.
I had one meeting with my manager Paul Connors and my father last week and I got to the footy club later that afternoon and Dean Bailey and Chris Connolly were congratulating me already.....

To be honest I didn’t pay too much attention to his game this week only some of the replay but his stats looked ok.

Pros:

- Efficiency again was good
- Good to see him get a goal & a goal assist

- Manager to get 3 tackles which is a lot better than zero last time round.

Cons:

- 9 uncontested marks has been a good thing in the past as he has made space but when you lose by 10+ goals then there must have been a lot of Melbourne players giving way too much space & Morton was one of these.

Does he keep his spot?

Yes, hopefully for the next two years after re-signing.

I watched the game & felt that Cale did not have that much impact but the statistics say differently. It seems he went about his business & made a solid contribution to a team that destroyed the Dockers. Looking at his game statistically this is the type of performance we will look for Cale to produce every week. He doesn’t need to get the mid to high 30’s possession wise as he did early in the season, performances like this were he wins the ball in a contested fashion & sets up play are

Pros:

- 12, I say 12 contested possessions. This is the sort of game I will be expecting from him when he puts on another 10kg’s
- 95% of game time this week is a big effort for anyone & shows he has a great tank. The only one to match it was Robbo (who doesn’t leave the 50) & Petterd who did a lot of work also.
- 78% efficiency which is about standard for Cale.

Cons:

- 3 clangers

- TBH I'm waiting for him to have a shocker so I can focus on that but he never seems to have a bad game (as in a shocker)

Does he keep his spot?

Yes,

Cale had a solid game but when he played on Garlett he allowed him to damage us on the score board. I don’t see Garlett as the type of player he should match up on as he took him deeper into the defensive 50 & didn’t allow Cale the freedom to make space as he does. Not a bad tactic by Carlton.

Pros:

- Second efforts were a feature of his game this week & I like the fact he went hard in a some contests that went to ground, it looks like he might be starting to get a bit of confidence in his body.
- Again he read the play well when away from his man which allowed him to take a couple of uncontested marks.
- 88% efficiency, he used the ball well.

Cons:

- Garlett kicked four goals for the day & three of them were on Cale from memory

- He needed to be more accountable when playing a small forward who stayed deep in his forward area.

Does he keep his spot?

Yes.

Wow 12 contested possies that is awesome. Good stuff Cale. Can't wait for next year when he comes back with an extra 8 kilos. He and Jack should be great friends after a pre season together in the gym.

I thought Cale was ultra impressive at certain points throughout the match.

He showed some of his skill and poise, and he is a player that really excites me.

One to watch, no doubt.

Cale had a great game, 36 disposals & linked up well through defence. He showed today that he can constantly make space & create an option for team mates which in turn relieves the pressure on them. If he can be pushed another 40-50 meters up the field he will take on a true wingman’s role & with his already great ability to make space will be a top link between forward & defence.

Pros:

- A number of times today I noticed him give off possession & by the time the player he gave the ball was told to play on or about to be tackled he had already presented himself as an option to again receive the ball.
- His running was great, I don’t think he has a great top speed but his ability to run all day gave him a lot of space & contributed to his 10 uncontested marks.
- Got the ball 36 times. That must make about 6 or 7 times this year he has got over 30 possessions.

Cons:

- When I saw his total possessions at the end of the game I couldn’t believe he got that many, he seems to get a lot of the ball at times without being noticed. This is not really a con, more an observation on his unassuming manner.

Does he keep his spot?

Damn straight, see you in 2010 Cale.

40 games already for Cale, it's quite incredible the unassuming way he has slotted into the team. Only missed the 1 game this year, through a virus.

Hard not to like the knack he has for finding the footy, get a bit of weight on that frame and let him off the leash Dean.
