Hi. Just new here.
Saw him play a game last year against Essendon and thought he was outstanding, was tough, attacking the ball really hard and breaking through tackles/packs disposing really well under pressure. Based on that game I knew he was going to be a really good player. Since then I think he has been solid. Would love to see him in more of a Lingy role cause he reminds me a bit of how he plays or maybe cause he's got a bit of weird head bit like Ling

I agree, I like the Lingy part of that post because he may be playing in the middle later on (could even play inside mid this year at some point) and having learnt to lock down on a defender so far in his career, he could become a wonderful midfielder and tag if need be.
Whether or not he has the running capacity just yet is the only question mark but yep, looks more than capable of playing a number of roles in the coming years.

Can't get the ball is hi biggest defiance and his opponent gets its too often

What do you mean by this? Are we talking about how often he gets the footy, how good/bad he is at shutting opponents down, or what?

He only averages 13 disposals a game, but when most of those are effective, as is the case with Guthrie, that figure is almost worth 26 disposals. I see a player who attacks the footy hard and who has a cool head on his shoulders.

As for his opponents, they're always going to get a lot of the footy, especially since he's on a learning curve as a young player. On occasion he's actually applied some good pressure to his direct opponents, and the more he matures and his confidence grows the more that will occur.

As is the case with our other young players, the people who expected the world of Guthrie were always going to be the only ones disappointed in his efforts. There will be some turds here and there among the gems, but most good players started out like this. It'd be nice if some people could have a little patience.

You've shown far more patience with that comment than I could muster. Almost like "I don't like him so he's no good, and that's final".

Long way to go but still think JHunt slightly ahead of Guthrie.

Look at how tight spots will be come finals if we get back injured players. Cannot see room for both unless we still have a few injuries.

Liked Corey's game against GWS - and for he last 3 weeks. Reckon he is ahead of GHS and Caddie.

The team come finals may not have too many new faces.

Possible players could include HMac, Blitz, Caddie, GHS, Rivers and Smedts. No way more than 3 of these will be in the team unless we have injury concerns.

Yep, Scott's comment of having a best 30 as opposed to a best 22 is starting to ring very true.

Geelong need to get starts right - Guthrie
http://www.sportsnews.com.au/afl/geelong-need-to-get-starts-right-guthrie/75622

Cameron Guthrie believes there is major room for improvement at table-topping AFL side Geelong, even after an unexpectedly successful start to the year.
The Cats enjoy their mid-season bye on the weekend, having escaped from a testing first half of the season with 10 wins from 11 matches.
They sit atop the ladder, despite struggling in the early stages of most games this year.
That trend continued last Saturday, when Greater Western Sydney kicked the opening five goals to lead by 32 points early in the first quarter.
“To come out like that was pretty ordinary from us, and that’s something that we haven’t got quite right this season – our starts,” Guthrie said.
“That was similar last week against Gold Coast. It shouldn’t take us that long to start and click into gear.
“We’ll walk away and hopefully against Brisbane, after the bye, we’ll get that right.”
Guthrie admitted his side’s stellar run, which includes the scalps of premiership favourites Hawthorn and Sydney, had been somewhat of a surprise.
“It’s a great position to be in, having dropped the one game heading into the bye,” he said.
“It’s probably something we didn’t really expect to do, because we did have a tough run at the start of the year.
“But we’re happy to be here and hopefully we don’t lose too many more heading into finals.”
Guthrie, one of many inexperienced Cats to impress in their 2013 campaign, said consistency would be his side’s biggest challenge as they bid for a fourth premiership in seven years.
“We’ve only dropped the one game, so that’s all good. But it’s not the form we’d like to have, heading into the bye,” the 20-year-old said.
“Definitely (there is room for improvement). I think we’ve played some good footy at times this year … but we’ve got to be doing it consistently.”

If you think Corey"s in the number one spot (as do I) then it's hard to see any of GHS, Smedts or Caddy getting a gurnsey come finals IMO, heck I can't even find a spot for Guthrie, and that's not a knock on him, or any of the other three mentioned, just that this is a bloody hard side for any of the kids to force their way into.

Not listed on injury report so another really baffling display from Guthrie. 9 disposals (0 in last quarter) and 1 tackle, after a promising first half. He was winning plaudits all day from the commentators but he really had another very quiet day. The coach has to take the most blame because he clearly has no faith in him in the big moments, when leading by that margin it beggars belief that a defender was on the bench late in the game.

He is very low on confidence, either play him as a tagger or try him up forward. He is lovely kick for goal so he maybe he could be our Paul P or Jake King. But first he needs to return to VFL.

He has the look of a haunted man at the moment.

Thought he was really good early, has great hands and a good contested mark for his size.

Butchered what should have been a certain goal with a poor pass to Mackie.

Yes he has all the tools to be a good player but I think he is either low on confidence or being badly coached at the moment. Everyone says he is doing his role, if that is the case he has a strange role in the team, keep their third best small forward quiet and not touch the ball himself.

He is going to be a good player but if Smedts and Caddy can be dropped so can he.

Yeah, not arguing with you at all.

Great game, definitely his best this year. Really thrived in a tight game and used the ball better than anyone. Seemed to have so much more urgency in his work.

More of that please!

Who played on Walters he kicked 3

Guthrie and J.Hunt split time on him, mostly.

First: Hunt high contact free + 50m penalty.

Second: A good team goal which started from the half back line, with Walters getting on the end of it. Pretty sure Guthrie wasn't even on the ground; Kelly and Caddy were the closest players to him and Guthrie is nowhere to be seen.

Third: Fremantle clearance with 30 seconds to go. Bartel was responsible for Walters at the time. The reason Walters was in the clear was because Bartel went to challenge Pearce. Guthrie is clearly on Mayne at that stage.

Even the most adament Guthrie-denier would be flat out trying to attribute even the slightest bit of blame to Guthrie for any of those goals. And even if he'd been responsible for all of them, it's the ninth time Walters has kicked 3+ in his last 20 games. He's a class player and getting three kicked on you by him isn't the end of the world.

He's a great mark for his size, or will be at AFL level but he seems a little rushed with his disposal and lets his game down a bit atm, but I like him!

It's amazing the more you look at the young guys, the ones with those few extra games are just that little bit more consistent.

For instance, who were the better ones Saturday night? Duncan (60+ games), Taylor Hunt (50 games), Christensen (49 games), and Guthrie (28 or so games but he's really looking settled now).

Considering that Brown, Thurlow, Vardy, Murdoch, Horlin-Smith, Simpson and Smedts are all under 30 games, just imagine what that group will be like with an extra 20 games. Very promising.

Guthrie's game was superb. Excellent defensively, used the ball well and as usual, did the team things 100% of the time. Without fuss too. Reminded me of someone else actually. :)
