He is very quick. Saw him burst away from a pack at one stage and was pleasantly surprised how quick he was.

There were two pieces of play I loved. One was in I think the first quarter, where he ran past either Taylor or Enright in the goal square under real pressure and hit Taylor Hunt in space with a perfect long pass, and the other was the 2 on 1 contest he won in the third quarter. So much poise.

I think i remember that 2-on-1 contest u refer to - Ling commented on it in the broadcast as being a very important win as Freo were off and running if he didnt intervene. Getting better with every game. Will make mistakes which will be magnified due to the position he is playing in, but becoming an important player. Could even go with Cyril for some periods if he plays on Saturday. Still expect Enright to go to him first.

Yeah you'd think Bruest and Rioli will be manned up by Enright and Guthrie. Makes the most sense.

That 1st one was right down where my seats are...I think it was Josh Hunt have him a lightning handball in the goal square and he gave a 50 metre to Taylor Hunt on the flank..
The 2nd one was fantastic..I still don't know how he beat the 2 and got it onto his foot.
I was impressed with his hardness.. he crashed in to a pack at one point I thought 'God Caddy goes in hard' and then I realized that Caddy got the next possession and it was Guthrie.

By no means was his game perfect... be turned the ball over once in the 1st quarter missing a target when switching inboard.. Pearce fortunately missed the snap.. the good thing was Cam grabbed the ball, took the kick in and didn't drop his head .

He's only young, he will make mistakes.. but I think he has enormous potential... will improve rapidly as he plays more games...

and FWIW I think eventually he'll become a midfielder

Can't remember the quarter but he was man on the mark in front of us, Ablett Terrace (city-end & La Trobe end pocket).
5 rows back the Freo player goes to play on and duck around, and (while obviously no taking credit) my old man yells out, "GO AT HIM GUTHRIE!!" he moved in and did a fantastic smother. Helped quell their speedy rebound to attack.

Like Caddy, and some others still learning, people need to be patient. They'll make mistakes but these kids are having moments of brilliance. They'll only get better.

There was another nice smother along the same wing too, by someone else. Great pressure in wet conditions.

The other smother was Caddy... and I'm actually pretty sure Caddy was the one in the pocket you described as well....if not Cads had another as well

The coach was very upbeat about him in Tweet the Coach. Suggested he saw him as a replacement for Josh Hunt in the near term and possibly a mid fielder in the longer term.

Haven't been as upbeat about him as some. However if the coach rates him that's good enough for me.:thumbsu:

Like Guthrie. Just does the simple things well. Every team needs this type of player.....very Toovey like for the Pies...and note how much they have missed him.

I would imagine Scott would be keen to develop him as a leader of future backline

Everyones fav expert David King , pointed out how Guthire covered for Enright last night. Lot of stuff I dont see , maybe other as well. He is typical of the slow burn type player that by the time he is 25 , he is just a rock and is known win each week.

If what your saying about Hunt is correct , it may be that Josh is in his last year.

I know he is a whipping boy here but I would like Hunt to holds his spot this year (performance pending of course)
Would be a fantastic reward if he could get to 200 games.
It may come down to him or Cam later in the year.. at least we know Josh will fight to make Cam earn his spot

I don't think Hunt is a whipping boy. He's been pretty good since coming back this year. The one flaw he does have is that small forwards can get away from him, especially at ground level. McGrath did that two weeks ago. There is a history of that going back a fair way. Combine that with being 31 and it's just unfortunate that some players have to make way for young ones.

He picked him as an emergency for the Grand Final after 2 senior games. He definitely rates him, no doubt at all. Doing the team things 100% of the time would be a big part of that I think.

We found another spot on the list?
Where has this guy been hiding? Is he a tall defender?

:)

Cam can play. Very very good pick by Wells. No fuss , no bells and whistles. Not yet anyway, but give him another 28 games!

Good point when the discussion of Thurlow V Grundy because there was the same sort of question about Guthrie V Darling. The wizard knows what it takes to build a list.

Has been impressing me for well over 12 months, so composed.

There's a reason Josh is in the vfl despite great form. And he'll only get back in if he takes Rivers spot, as there's no way known they will drop Guthrie.

I like that he doesn't just naturalize or defend the ball out of his space... but he sets up play. Even under pressure he puts the ball to teammates advantage, rather than just bombing it away. He is also a pretty sturdy contested ball winner in one-on-one situations.

Not to mention his decision making.
