that the game has gone past him in just one summer?

I will probably get shot down by every Ling lover for saying this, but I am finding hard to see wear Lingy fits in this modern day and age of football. There have been talks on this board for him to be our next captain. This is a real worry because at the moment I think his days in this game are numbered and he needs to reinvent himself for a second time.

Here are the facts about Cameron Ling
  • He tries hard and works his butt off for the club
  • He can run all day and has great endurance
  • Has leadership qualities
  • Is a good role model for other players

But this season he has really struggled. He looks super slow ! He has always looked slow, but with the style of game we are playing at the moment it looks even worse. He made a name for himself as one of the best defensive midfielders in the comp. He could run with the best players but also hurt them going the other way. This year he has lined up on players that he has beaten in the past, and they have made him look slow, and he has chased tail all night. He might be carrying an injury that I don't know about, but I just think with the rule changes, draftees getting quicker etc etc, he is really getting showed up for how slow he is. He is one pace and one dimensional. Yes he can go all day at that same pace, but if players continue to run away from him, or pressure him because they run him down he no longer has a spot in the midfield. He doesn't have exceptional skills, he doesn't have pace, and he isn't a clearance king. If he can't keep up and play that defensive role, then what does he offer other than his big tank.

I don't often agree with Dermott Brereton but on Saturday night he gave Ling 3 votes in the Triple M WOG. Now people are going to say he had 32 possessions yadi yada, but Dermie put forward a strong case. Ling's stats were either loose ball gets, handball receives, clangers or short kicks. It took his total down to about 8 effective possessions for the night. His long kicks were all apparently clangers. Dermie's point was that Geelong's terrible stop start game plan at the moment was being worsened by players like Ling racking up useless stats, running past players clapping his hands for easy kicks, and presenting in poor parts of the ground. Whilst he wasn't our worst on Saturday night, I am concerned for his and our future if he is to remain our so called top line midfielder. He badly needs to find something else to his game. I just think he is too slow for a midfield role in this day and age, and his problems are heightned because he has no genuine line breaking pace around him. Can it be possible that somebody can become redundant in AFL in just 6 months?

Why not try him forward for an extended period during a game and see what happens, he is strong and is a very good contested mark. We could do alot worse.

Just an outsiders opinion, don't take offence!
This season, the way he plays reminds me of Woewodin!
Think about it.
Both run all day and give 100%.
Both get plenty of stats because of their fitness levels but neither hurt the opposition with these stats. Both are slow accross the ground.
They get plenty of possessions on the wings and half back line, very few inside forward 50.
Most kicks are short and have no bearing on a game, and very few are contested.
What's happened with this guy? No longer clears the ball from stopages and seems quite content to wander around the backline and wings picking up cheap possessions.
Become a disappointing player and one of the reasons you guys have struggled this year.

Ling was and still probably is a quality tagger. But when he started getting a few kicks himself on a regular basis he started getting tagged.

He needs to go back to that tagging role because atm he is showing us that he isn't an out and out midfielder in his own right. Bomber should be using him to negate opposition midfielders and get back to basics cause lets be perfectly honest his pace (or lack there of) and ball skills have never really set the world on fire.

Two years ago he would have been in my top 3 players at Geelong, last year he struggled and this year he has been very ordinary, no pace, no defencive game, and no skills!

And there in lies the problem. He has had tagging roles this year and he is too slow. Cameron Bruce was a prime example.

I'm a Ling fan...with Scarlett he has been our best player over the past 4 years.

He hasn't had a great start to the season, but he is still working his backside off.
Unfortunately though, achieving little.

Go CATS!!

The end was always going to come quickly for Ling, i have said this for a long time. The Woewodin comparison is not far off the mark. He is a major problem in the midfield.

i was the one who posted "trade ling" and everyone abused me and now finally everyone is waking up to his poor form and ineffectiveness when the ball is in his hands.....he might have got 32 touche's on the weekend but he turned it over nearly every time or gave it to a player who was immediately in trouble.........

also we have to trade either charlie gardiner or henry playfair, both of them shouldnt be in the same side!!!

ive been worried about ling for awhile now. and most other cats fans have never had the balls to criticise him cos hes an apparent celebrity.

whats the opposite of damaging?...cos he and corey are the complete opposite. They could rack up 35 possies and we'd still lose by 30 points...that is damning imho.

i dont know but like the fwd line i feel changes to the midfield need to be made pronto. sack Lovell for starters the guy is a tool

Geelong vs Richmond no change

Refer to very first post of this thread

What was he thinking in the second quarter playing on after taking a mark 5m out.

STRUGGA - LING at the moment, but is there a remedy in sight?

I'd move him to the defence positions they've been playing Corey in and give Corey a full game in the middle and see what Ling can do running from the back.

Or, give him taggin jobs again, which is where he made his name, which is probably what we will see vs weagles.

Wasn't Linga a forward in his jnr days? Scoring goals has been a problem of ours, he is not a bad contested mark, and if u say he is slow, stick him at FF. worth a try?!

agreed. he is too slow for midfield. maybe putting him FF and making him run his opponent around would be an advantage, as he can run all day?

but as you said he's a strong mark

Not much has changed this week.

Useless again today, and the supporters as a whole are starting to get on his back.

We actually give the opposition a head start in the middle. The majority of the time it is 2 vs 3, because Ling is never any danger of getting a clearance.

Outsiders opinion here

Like a lot of your midfield, I think he isn't damaging. Gets plent of the ball but does not hurt the opposition. Enright and Corey are similar, both get the ball but don't have the disposal to hurt you. I'd rate Bartel and Kelly a bit better; Bartel good overhead and Kelly a bit more class, but once again, lack pace. There is no flair or x factor through the midfield, something which you need to break the lines
