Opinion Can Dustin Martin be the GOAT? (Answer: no)

If you are a club and you line up every player drafted in the 21st century knowing what they have done in their careers I think the order would be something like

1. Buddy
2. Gary Ablett Jnr
3. Gawn
4. Hawkins
5. Scarlett
6. Judd
7. J.Riewoldt
8. Rance
9. Kennedy (West Coast)
10. Martin

Probably forgetting some players, but I would take the other 9 over Martin in a heartbeat.
no goodes?

Even Richmond fans did not think he deserved the one in 2017. Go back and look, majority thought Houli was better.

Do yourself a favour and watch the replay. Dusty was by miles BOG, and I mean miles. On player ratings Martin was off the scale.

1. 30.9 D Martin
2. 22.8 S Edwards
3. 18.2 J Graham

Next best were 15 or below. Dusty's had 29 possessions, 22 contested gone 83% efficiency, 9 score involvements, 2 goals + 2 assists, all 4 of those contested, 2 against multiple opponents, only an all time game is keeping that from being BOG. In the last 12 Grand Finals only Luke Shuey in 2018 has rated higher than Dusty's 2017. Though Dusty's 25.7 rating in 2020 would have been around 32 in a full length game, so in reality also rated higher than his 2017 masterpiece.

If you combine the 3 key BOG methods for Grand Finals, coaches votes, Norm Smith votes and player ratings, and you make reasonable adjustments and imputations, this is the top 4 Grand Final performances we have seen since 2012:

1. D Martin 2020 32.1 + 10 + 15 = 57.1
2. L Shuey 2018 35.7 + 10 + 11 = 56.7
3. C Petracca 2021 28.8 + 10 + 15 = 53.8
4. D Martin 2017 30.9 + 8 + 13 = 51.9

Those 4 are ahead of any other Grand Final performance since 2012. There is not one doubt they were all BOG.

Weren’t we told by Tiger supporters Dusty was killing it on the track in the preseason and would be back to his best in season 2024?

His decline has been sharp and embarrassing. Dusty will undoubtedly retire this year and when he does and we look back we will say he was sensational for about three years but not in the frame as GOAT.

He is clearly playing hampered, if you can't see that then you haven't watched him play properly over the years.

Saying his decline is sharp and embarrassing is foolish by you, like saying Hawkins decline in his seasons when he struggled with certain issues was sharp and embarrassing. Dusty was flying in the pre season but something has gone wrong quite apart from the fact the team is in total malfunction, making his role ahead of the ball almost impossible to execute to a high degree. Add in the club is clearly now in a race for the bottom having written finals off and his mission cannot even be assumed.

You are confusing the amount of almost unbelievably good finals series Dusty played(3) with how many years he played brilliantly. 2023 was about his 8th or 9th best season at best and he was the second highest rated pure forward in the AFL.

Hawkins decline has been sharp and embarrassing this season but he's about to turn 36, was still very good in 2023 and elite in his AA 2022. 35 onwards there's always a chance of falling off a cliff.

Martin's just shy of his 33rd birthday. In his 30s he's had 3 seasons of decent-ish output when he's on the park, but this season he's a non factor. He's barely getting onto Richmond's best players in the weekly afl.com.au reports while Richmond are missing most of their top end talent.

Do you get tired of saying he was somehow ‘hampered’ for all but maybe five years of his career? He’s hampered by not not being as great as you think he is outside a brief period where he shone brightly. That it coincided with an extremely successful period for Richmond is why he’ll be remembered as a legend. But this current decline shows just why he’s behind the likes of Cousins, Roo, Black etc when you take in their overall career.

He didn't even make the AA team in 2023 and just barely scraped into the squad based on his late charge in a series of dead rubbers. Maybe he's waiting to repeat that trick this season. His first half of the seasons in 2023 and 2024 he has been a non-factor.

Tell me the 5 years you refer to.

And I will tell you what he achieved outside those 5 years when he wasn't hampered.

To be fair to Dusty, like every good player he has formed a relationship with players around him and now those players are gone .
Same as every great player who has had support to be that great player.
He has no more heart for the game and who can blame him?
"No man is an Island" and Dusty is no different.

Anyone who has watched Dusty closely over the years can tell you he definitely has not lost his heart for the game.

I told you after last season Hawkins had hit the wall half way through 2023, but you weren't having it. Something is up with Dusty. He is very shy around certain contests and we have never seen this before from him when anything that matters is on the line. He is fully engaged in the team, and because he doesn't engage in publicly broadcasting excuses we will never know what the issue is.

No!!!!! Please Meteoric Rise, can't you just cite the reference of one of your thousands of previous posts on this subject, e.g., post number XXX, instead if giving us a thesis?

No Sttew as nothing in this wide world gives me greater pleasure than regaling Cats fans with the many and varied achievements of their nemesis D Martin, written freshly each and every time. :)

Yea, yes, everyone else is cooked, he’s just ‘hampered’. He’ll be 50 and you’ll be convinced he could still tear it up but for some mysterious ailment hampering him.

But JOB you said he was cooked early last year. Next minute last 8 games in the top 2 rated players in the AFL. So it appears he sometimes magically uncooks himself. Quite a gift. :)

1. Ratings.

2. If he has this magical power to suddenly give a s**t, it says everything anyone needs to know about his attitude and his lack of leadership and lack of application. Especially given the situation the team finds itself in. Can you imagine a Bontempelli or Petracca or a Gawn or a Dangerfield or a Boak or a Cripps or Green or any top tier player of the last 5-10 years that’s still around, whether at or past their best, going so meekly about their business while their team flounders the way he has of late? At least LOOK like you care mate.

True, like Hawkins in the 2019 semi-final when he runs around whacking blokes off the ball to show how much he cared.
