Can Hawthorn succeed while ignoring the elite end of the draft? - Part 2

Yeh the Burton trade was shocking.

Burton actually wanted to stay (why?) and was one of the few talented young players on the Hawks list, and him coupled with a first rounder in a strong draft for a flaky temperamental half forward in Wingard always had the potential to go pear shaped.

St Kilda has also drafted an entire half-backline (Clark, Long, Battle) from the picks sent across from the O’Meara trade.

The opportunity cost of properly restocking their list is becoming far too big too ignore.
The only thing that made trading Burton away ok was getting Scrimshaw in the same offseason to play the same role but don’t know why he can’t get a game this year

You could of had both though, and that would have been your half-back line for a decade. Move Impey up to a wing.

Then used the additional pick to add another talented young player, be it Duursma or someone like Ian Hill who would be fill and immediate and long term need.

Completely agree just seemed like Clarkson wanted Wingard for years and didn’t care at what cost long term

Wingard bashing is stupid, he had an injury interrupted season last year and finished it strongly.

He killed it round 1 and was far from our worst last night.

Plenty of things you can criticize but he should not be in the top 10.

The side they picked agains Geelong was weird as fu** as well.

All of McEvoy, Frawley, Frost (reckon he’s a great pick up btw), Sicily and Stratton in one back line.
Use our best ruckmen as a defender to play a worse ruck, which keeps out a young talent who would be a better fit (Scrimshaw). Also leave out our best young key forward who has shown a lot of when given games.

I was confused going in and am angry now, not the first time we have gone in too tall. Did it in the finals against Richmond in 17 on a wet night as well.

Except people are right to point out he's soft. He clearly struggles to keep up with the tougher, more rugged midfielders like Selwood, Dangerfield and Duncan in the middle.

He was the only player who showed heart last night defensively, Geelong just coasted it out of the middle against everyone. He had a great smother, and genuinely showed defensive application unlike most mids last night.

We have Mitchell, Worpel, O’meara... we don’t need tough mids, we need class and he has it.

Having 'clean' users who can't actually use the ball clearly isn't very helpful.
He can use it, using a one game sample size would have been pretty stupid i would have thought.

Is Dusty also a terrible ball user after Thursday night?

He laid 2 tackles against a Geelong side that dominated possession. Soft.

Honey, you can't designate all the necessary toughness to your "tough mids". Every midfielder in an AFL side has to be tough in this day and age.

Wingard is too soft to play in the guts against harder-nosed players like Dangerfield and Selwood.

You can select rookies in the draft who have good ‘defensive application’

He is in the side to provide class on the outside, and he kept missing targets and generally being ineffective.

Yes but when people wrongly criticize him as lazy i will dispute it, he was bad last night. Awful even, but i think he showed effort which i can not say about 15 others. Targeting him is because of his name alone.

Our captain was terrible last night and offered nothing, our midfield barely put up a fight, Morrison was soft like actually genuinely squibbed a contest and got no mention. Plenty of people to target over Chad off last nights game and unlike Chad a lot of them were not good in Round 1 either.
