Can Hawthorn succeed while ignoring the elite end of the draft? - Part 2

I doubt we get him but if GWS keep playing sh*t and starving him of entries it may just happen.

We also have 3 1st rounders this year so hardly just topping up.
Not sure making a grandfinal last year was playing shit. Gaints having playing much better than geelong recently. And he did win a coleman recently so don’t really think fw entries is a problem that can’t be sorted. He leaves for more money not success.

God I’d hate see how you feel about paying McGovern 700k+
McGovern would be the number 1 forward at Hawthorn.

Patton, Lewis and O'Brien haven't got anything on McGovern.

Funny thing is, I haven't rated McGovern at all and think when Charlie is fit and firing he will either be moved to defense or out of the side.

Lol

Agree with you on obrien he stinks, but Patton was a lot better than McGovern before his knees, he’s just ****ed now. And Mitch Lewis showed more in his first year in senior footy than mcgovern has shown in 8 years. Don’t think any of them would be on half of what McGovern’s on.

LMFAO nah

Lewis last season averaged more disposals, marks, goals, tackles, hit outs, goal assists, contested marks (by a long way), marks inside 50 and score involvements.

Despite being younger and a lot more raw. Lewis is not just better he is significantly better and still has more potential upside.

Lewis says hi. McGovern is trash.

He's only on 600k, but even that is too much. We are in a privileged position though with 3 additional key forwards who are better than him.

The difference is we aren't sitting here patting ourselves on the back for his continual underperformance, while Hawks supporters are fighting tooth and nail to justify the Chad's underwhelming (to put it mildly) 1 and a bit seasons - I guess mainly because any potential success hinges on him, and any admission of his poor performance undermines their strategy overall.

It's a shame Hawthorn couldn't wait one year to try to bring Jack Martin in. He's being really good this season; very tenacious. Hasn't dropped his head in any of our losses, and was actually almost BOG in our Round 1 loss to Richmond. Has kicked goals in losses too, which is something Wingard hasn't been able to accomplish yet. (Betts has also managed goals in each game including our losses. Why is Chad so immune to showing up when the going gets tough?)

Again, I'd be very frustrated by Chad's regular disappearances.

You've got it in for Chad. It's trolling now.

If you’d watched our last two games you would have seen that he played deep forward in a team that was incapable of moving the ball forward with any speed or precision. The games that he played mid forward he was in our best 3 players in 3 out of the 4 games. He also has more coaches votes than martin and Betts will probably get for the year, also If you had any other decent small forwards Betts would have been dropped before last week, lucky he had a good game and bought himself some time. You did well with martin. Gold Coast got screwed there but they’ll fly past both of our teams in the next year or two.

That aside, Hawthorn will win this week and be back ahead of 50-50 W-L. Mark it down. 4-5 goal margin, which in 2020 is more like 6 or 8 goals.

I'd be very pleasantly surprised if that happened. Any form issues aside, the ground simply doesn't suit us. We need more space , and without it we just can't launch enough attacks out of defence to win. Our ball movement isn't anywhere near as terrible on larger grounds. No accident our two best wins against Lions and Tigers this year were at MCG, and our losses were either at the Cattery or GIANTS stadium. With injuries also mounting, think Melbourne should go in comfortable favourites. Clarko will need come up with a coaching master class to get us over the line.

Clarko needs to come up with a masterclass to beat Melbourne? Turn it up! Please. You are milking this for all it's worth. Hawks are still favourites to win this weekend against a side that is barely going and extremely flaky. Hawks will absolutely cop a flogging in the media if they lose this one. I don't understand the vitriol Hawks have received this week though. I think they've been ok for a team that most didn't have in the 8 this season. They are a list that is doing about what it should I reckon. They should win this weekend though or heat will come on the team. I'd be throwing a lot more shade at the Kangaroos tbh.

Mitchell and O’Meara were good moves.

Wingard is quality but the deal was shithouse.

Should’ve attacked the 2018 draft like you attacked 2001 (somehow). Trade a Breust/Gunston?

This is not a hindsight call, I said it at the time.

I was pleading for this at the time, I was the lone voice it seemed on the hawks board, very frustrating.

Sounds like Clarkson will pull up Stumps at the end of the season.

Interesting what Lewis said. Didn't just say maybe it's time Mitchell took over. He really sold him as a young , enthusiastic, genius.

Mitchell has time but he came back from WC early. Unless things went south at WC - which is not a great sell for his coaching if do.

It does seem like there is a big push for Mitchell to take over.

Let's see how the Hawks respond. It won't take long to see if the Hawks are behind Clarko.

He came back early on the proviso he'd take over. Most know this.

You think the O'Meara trade was a good one?

They basically gave up 2016 picks 23 and 36 and 2017 picks 7 and 26 to get him

That is a lot of good draft picks for one player that has been okay

At least Wingard is looking like an AA player

They could have helped replenish the list with those picks.
