Can Hawthorn succeed while ignoring the elite end of the draft? - Part 2

If we go this year undefeated that has to count as succeeding surely ?
Please this is a forum on the Big Footy Main board we are talking about, we could win one of the next three premierships and still they would try a bring up a reason to doubt Hawthorn.

If there's no draft can you still trade ?

I am sure there will be a draft. Either we will get some sort of season or they will use the finishing positions of the 2019 season. There are going to be far more dud picks in the first round this year, and far more stars taken with bad draft picks this year as well as there is way more unknowns about players than there has been in a few decades.

I mean look at Clayton Oliver. On his 17th year form he was going to be a rookie pick at best. The club that picked the equivilant of him as a rookie is getting a steal.

Last years draft picks on track. With a couple of oldies retiring at season end and kids coming in average age will drop significantly. Hawks are building and really like what I am seeing ...... Rome wasn’t built in a day!

Hawthorn?
Are they still a thing?
At the end of all this, we might be one of only 4 clubs to still be a thing!

On another note, if the season does start up again and we win the Premiership, the new Accident of History thread that will undoubtedly be created will be an interesting read.

Players tend to peak at 28
I was thinking players have their peak year between 25-30.

Not even Coronavirus will kill this thread
I agreed.

Not even Ross Lyons career has been killed, he manages to get a job at Footy classified.

Worrying signs for Hawthorn

*oh how I yearn for simpler times

It really depends. They can burn every 1st rounder and can still manage to recruit well with their late rounders in the 3rd and 4th and get the occassional gem in the Rookie list.

Oldest Round 1 teams:

28.13 Fitzroy 1946
28.12 Hawthorn 2020
28.02 South Melbourne 1945
27.80 North Melbourne 2016
27.78 Collingwood 1920
27.63 Fitzroy 1943
27.61 Richmond 1922
27.60 Footscray 1925

The only three players younger than Sicily (25y76d) were the 21yo's Hanrahan, Morrison & Worpel. Interesting development phase looming for the Hawks.

might be 4 months older come round 2. what do the chicken bones say? Footscray 1925 is interesting, would be the VFL debut

Hanrahan and Morrison might be in line to be replaced older

Hardwick and Lewis being injured didn’t help and should be back for round 2

Until someone can sctually provide data showing a link between age and poor future performance I don't see the point of discussing it tbh.

The evidence from the last 15 or so years says the older your list is, the better future you have. Is there any difference when looking at sides fielded ?
