Can Hawthorn succeed while ignoring the elite end of the draft? - Part 2

No my point was listing a heap of top 10 failed picks as a reason why that strategy fails isn't a great point, since the evidence shows it does work.

Will this Hawks plan work? Dunno, but it hasn't yet.

It's not as if Essendon have shown how to build a flag contending side over the past decade either?

I'd honestly rather back Graham Wright and The Hawks into challenging for top 4 than Dodoro and The Bombers. Your list construction is all over the shop.

Yes Essendon are garbage. Thanks for that wonderful contribution.

I never said you're garbage, but your stuck in the middle of the road rut like North have been in the past decade, not bottoming out (aside from the year the 34 were banned) but year to year, hovering from around a 6th - 11th place finish on the ladder.

Some of your trades have been great (Smith, Saad etc) but I am not sure if Dodoro is bad at drafting decent young talent that will become future A graders or you have poor young player development at EFC.

You guys will improve under Rutten, but reckon it's about time Dodoro got the tap on the shoulder after this year's draft and trade period.

You might not say it but I have.

I've even said it in this thread. But Essendon has no relevance in this thread, I can critique other clubs despite supporting them. Shocking concept on Bigfooty I know, but it is possible.

Hawks don’t need super stars of the comp .... they only need players to play their role!

Still reckon The Chad Wingard trade seemed a bit un-Clarko like, although I tend to believe now that is Kern and PAFC who were actively wanting Wingard traded, not the other way around.

Played pretty well on the weekend btw Chadders

3 good games out of 4 this season

Clarko has always liked to bring in experience and quality talent. Some haven’t worked out but many have. I reckon Clarko’s involvement with international rules etc was mainly to get to know players from other clubs on a personal level. He is as cunning as a snake. Courting and luring Chad to Hawthorn is a brilliant move ..... he is absolute quality with plenty of footy left in him. Glad he wears the brown and gold!

So in answer to the thread title:

Can the Hawks succeed? - Your answer is Yes they can but I don't know if they will or not

We were getting Scrimshaw for nothing, so Burton was replaced easily. It really ended up a reasonable draft pick for 5 or 6 years worth of Wingard.

Im very happy with the trade.

That O'Brien kid is getting better with every week.

Hawks have a good one there

Some Hawks supporters focus on what he doesn't do - because he does drop a lot of marks.

But he also flies for a hell of a lot, his work rate is elite for a tall player and he also backs up in the ruck. His presence in the air is outstanding.

Infrequently he does have a game where he clunks his marks and when that happens i think we could beat any team in the comp playing at their best, or come close.

I am a big fan of TOB this year and last year.

Tim "glimpses" Obrien
It's Tim 'Almost' O'Brien (even Huddo was calling it on Sunday). He teases enough for some doubters to hold onto the hope that he one day becomes Tim 'Always' O'Brien.

Hawthorn circa 2013-2015 disagree and besides nobody is saying that approach guarantees a flag, but it does work.

Has there been a premiership team where the team hasn't used multiple top 10/15 picks?

Sydney had 3 in 2012 (McVeigh, Bolton, Jetta).

Hawthorn now have Wingard, O'Meara, Scrimshaw, Patton and Scully that were considered elite talent in their draft. Day (pick 13 this year) coming along nicely too.

Well no. If it doesn't work then it shows no they can't.

Perhaps splitting hairs but we don't know if they can yet. That might change in future.

Players the Hawks didn't draft. Which is the question, does that matter in the end? Clarko and co are currently answering that.

Sydney is a good example. Do the Hawks have similar?

So therefore is the real question actually: is there a difference between 'drafting' top 10 talent, or 'trading' top 10 talent?
