Can Hawthorn succeed while ignoring the elite end of the draft? - Part 2

Every player has limitations though. Mitchell can win ball and distribute by hand. He's not the piece that's going to break lines, kick bullet passes inside 50 or kick the match winning goals when needed.

Neither did Sam Mitchell. Tom Mitchell wasn't recruited to be that type of player. That's what Smith, Henderson and Scully were recruited to do.

‘he built in 04-08 Then rebuilt 09-12. How the hell did he survive?

He doesn’t have a hodge, a buddy, a roughy this time around to build around...This current team has ZERO leadership and ZERO elite talent. That’s the big difference. You can’t build something into a quality product when you don’t have the proper parts.

If I were a struggling/ mid level club with a coach out of contract at the end of 2021, I'd be on the phone to Clarkson's manager to ask the question of what he's doing next. Wouldnt suprise if this continues if the Hawks and he need to make the move.
Hardwick will be in the same boat in the next year or two so don’t get too excited!

Burton was fantastic today. Probably Port’s best across the 4 quarters, although Boak was also really good.

Duursma wasn’t overly influential, but crucial in a couple of one-on-ones in the last quarter including a big contest against Walsh (although it may have been in the third quarter).

Port would be very pleased with how those two are tracking, and in the grand scheme of things wrapped with how the 2018 trade period has panned out for them, bringing in Rozee, Butters, Duursma, Burton and McKenzie. Mayes played his first game for Port today and was also solid.

To be honest I don't think Hawthorn is suiting Clarkson anymore. I think if anything he looks a little sick. I think he needs to consider moving to somewhere a bit more sunny. Need to think of a few options, um, just putting it out there, how about Bondi? Now obviously Clarkson can't coach Hawthorn if he lives in Bondi, so we will need to find another team for him to coach, one that is close to Bondi. It is going to take me ages to think of what team is close to Bondi, but I think Clarkson would be very happy there.

Building through the draft.
Clarko says NO

To me Clarkson and GWS' list is a match made in heaven and I'd be sounding the other out if I was either party. Clarkson is a good list away from another flag and GWS are being let down by a mediocre coach.
From what angry ant has said in the past once he stops coaching the Hawks he doesn’t get another gig elsewhere ..... that’s passion!

Fair enough, have to respect that if its true. Rare to see that kind of loyalty but gotta love it if so

It’s not IF but WHEN the AFL offer Clarko $10m+ over 5 years to coach GWS he isn’t turning that down...especially with the talent he will have at his exposure.

Knowing Kennett and his history with Clarkson, Clarko's eventual exit from the club could actually be acrimonious/bitter.

Don't think Clarkson wants to be seen as deserting a sinking ship, so I think he will try keep coaching for at least 1 more season .

‘WHEN has been what? 7 years already/

Worpel is very mediocre.

He’s a good player, but he needs to be allowed to just hunt to the ball. He’s never going to have the capacity to play on the outside.

On reflection though I’m not sure why Hawthorn supporters thought re-introducing a recently injured Tom Mitchell to an already treacle slow midfield was going to be fruitful for them. Surely their stagnant ball movement shouldn’t come as too much of a surprise.
