Can Hawthorn succeed while ignoring the elite end of the draft? - Part 2

Tell you what struggling is ..... when a club has two picks before another club has its first!
It would depend on how that club got those two picks. And would also depend on why that other club doesn’t have any early picks. If they traded away those early picks to secure crabs from other teams, then they’d be struggling.

Agree totally about the power structure within clubs being largely unknown and having all sorts of perceptions for various clubs. Still strange to me that clubs don't have proper GM's of footy who take responsible for the recruiting and list like in US sports. I sense it's heading that way.

Football Directors on the Board are the ultimate wildcard. Dunstall hired Clarkson and always made sure Jeff's bite was never as big as his bark, yet at the same time Dunstall is clearly one of the smarter footy minds. Now it's Richie Vandenberg which is an interesting dynamic, hard to see him having authority and directors view over Clarko when he was captain under him.

And on that topic add Mark Ricciuto right towards the top of your list of publicly perceived movers and shakers.

Ricciuto was a great player but comes across as a nuffy executive. Doesn't know how to play a straight bat. Adelaide are another interesting case, everyone targets Ricciuto and Tex Walker and any press around Matthew Nicks is basically 'tough luck, fella'. Don Pyke didn't have much of a media profile nor does is their chairman particularly outspoken. Tippett was a disaster, Gunston, Bock, McGovern, Betts, Jenkins, Greenwood, Lever, Lyons, Cameron, Ellis-Yolmen, Keath, Davis, Vince etc. have all left over the years for different reasons but it's rarely the coach (Sanderson, late Phil Walsh, Pyke, Nicks incoming) who get the blame.

Interesting comments from Clarkson

Doubling down on trading v drafting

I think Clarkson was a bit off in comparing the Hawks, Cats, Swans, like he did. Geelong normally retain a pick in the first 25, often more than one. And the Swans have Accademy players to fall back on.

The Academy system will change soon - the media are starting to talk about the draft being compromised.

It only got compromised as the AFL gave the Victorian clubs huge concessions to keep them happy.

Lol what younger options

Its a funny statement isn't it, trade away all decent draft picks for nearly a decade, then threaten veterans who have played poorly for years that they will bring in late draftees to replace them if they continue to play poorly, it's a joke.

Instead I would rather he just drop players not playing well, for players that are playing well, insane concept, I know.

Been saying it for years , 1st round should be clean no academy or f/s interference. After that business as usual seems a decent compromise between incentives and rewards too me

I'm actually ok with Blakey

Will Langford was very handy for us in the 2014 Grand Final

The academies were meant to be more kids who never normally would have chosen Aussie Rules.

Blakey would have. And most clubs would have loved him.

And Langford was a rookie who did grow up playing footy but which no other club wanted.

I dont see how they are connected in any way.

Blakey was an outlier. It is pointless arguing about the academy system as a whole based on an outlier.

Crazy clarko lookingmore and more like sheedy in his last few years.
