Can Hawthorn succeed while ignoring the elite end of the draft? - Part 2

1 possession for a whole game is pretty abysmal though.

Lewis is going to have to figure out how to still have some impact when Hawthorn are down, because it is going to happen quite a bit over the next few years.
He’s got some tools from what I’ve seen previously, I’d back him in.

Clarko needs to release the shackles a bit though.

Seems to be overly concerned with his shoulder. Will not tackle (goes for bumps instead), and not smashing packs like he was late last year. Hard to get confidence back after his injury when the rest of the team is so down on it too. Hard to see us turning this around right now. Entire side performing well under what it was doing late last year. Sure Burgoyne and perhaps Stratton dropping off was predictable, but younger players that were carrying us to wins late last year are just not turning up right now. We are not as bad as our total lack of confidence is making out, but not clear where confidence is going to come from. Impey will hopefully inject some creativity off half back next week (hopefully replacing Stratton if Clarko is good to his word during the week), not sure how soon Breust will be back, but forward line needs him desperately. Hopefully TOB back in and let Lewis get some confidence back in his body in scratch matches. Bigger ground next week will help, but Carlton's confidence levels compared to ours will be enough alone to give us another loss.

I’m not sure if you saw our game today, but we were shocking apart from about 20 minutes when we dominated.

Next weeks’ game should actually be reasonably competitive.

Still waiting for you to respond to your chest puffing about adding Patton and Frost to your side this year 😂👍🏻. Enjoy the long rebuild.

Frost has been a handy addition to the backline. Patton's injury is unfortunate, and we'd love to have him on the park with TOB injured, and Lewis a shadow of his late 2019 self. If he'd done his ACL instead of a hammy, pointing the finger would be appropriate, but he's just been somewhat unlucky, and way too early to make a call on that trade (which cost us almost nothing).

No doubt, but he’s going to have to adapt to playing in a poor team which is far more difficult to do when you’ve been able to play your natural game while the squad is going well.

We had Melbourne fans tell us the same thing in this thread last week, and I was doubtful. I'm still doubtful. You should go in comfortable favourites.

Then why was Patton chased ?

Because our key forward stocks are the worst in the AFL. We chased Tom Lynch and missed out. You can see why...

Patton was available and came cheap in terms of a trade. Clarko and Wright have always backed themselves with players from other clubs and those type of trades....unfortunately in the last 5 seasons the majority of the players they have bought in other than Tom Mitchell have been bad decisions.

The footy department have clearly overrated our list in recent seasons and unfortunately it’s going to cost us over the next 3-5 years.

Do we have any concerns about their supposed quality young players?

Lewis did great last year but he hasn't fired a shot this year. Scrimshaw likewise. Hard to see Worpel getting much better than he is currently given his kicking is abysmal and he can't kick goals. Morrison is crap.

Day has shown a bit. Other than that, what young players do they have that look AFL quality? Tough times ahead for this Hawthorn team in my humble opinion.
I'd back Lewis in to become a good 2nd banana, it's really hard to be a young key forward in a bad side whilst battling injuries. Worpel to bounce back and worse case scenario be a functional defensive midfielder type. Day looks excellent.

2 other good young backmen in Greaves and CJ should get a go, the issue for those guys is with Sicily, Day, Scrimshaw, Hardwick and Impey, Howe plus all the veterans (which really should just be Frost) the backline might be the Hawks strongest spot both now and for the future.

Jackson Ross (a little), and Matt Walker (a lot) are two fowards with some talent who really need to get games so they can be evaluated.

There's a group of guys in Jones, Cousins, Morrison, Moore, Hanrahan who all aren't hopeless but just don't seem to have a lot of upside. Even if the Hawks plan to retool and not rebuild they should look to some of those guys to become cheap young fit role players rather than the old guys they keep playing.

Hows the Wingard for Burton trade looking so far?

Id much rather a 23 yo Key defender than a front running half forward winger.
What? I thought that Wingard was in Brownlow /AA / career best form. Certainly a win for Hawthorn when Burton and Duursma are not even contributing for Port Adelaide currently.

🤔

Is that a GIF of one of Hawthorn's star youngsters?

Hilarious how much Hawks fans are clinging to Will Day. Someone said in their autopsy thread he was enormous today.

Dude had 10 touches and was ranked 15th on the ground for them, slightly above Keegan effing Brooksby.

lol.
If I'm on Bay 13 I'd say go Norf but I'm not:) Will Day is the only thing keeping me going at the moment. At 70 kegs, should be at Box Hill for 2 years but we are that bad he is in. Looks like the elite end of the draft is happening.

Hawthorn can get the best available key forward with pick 3 in this year’s draft.

I wonder how Wingard picking Hawks over Bulldogs is going to work out for him long term
