Can Hawthorn succeed while ignoring the elite end of the draft? - Part 2

Hows the Wingard for Burton trade looking so far?

Id much rather a 23 yo Key defender than a front running half forward winger.

Sicily shits on Burton. And Scrismhaw has more upside than Burton too.

Unless Burton can play as an inside midfielder, he’s not a big loss!

Scrimshaw does not have more upside than Burton. Scrimshaw will only ever play as a defender.

Burton will eventually push up and play midfield. He’s first season at Hawthorn was sensational.

Trading burton and our first round pick for Wingard was a terrible decision...the amazing thing is, the Omera Trade was 10 x worse.

They have fallen off the cliff faster than I thought they would but the heat that Worpel is copping isn’t warranted IMO. He is having a poor year but he is still quality and will bounce back IMO.
I’d be much more concerned with some of their other youth, Lewis, Morris and Hardwick are ordinary and I just don’t see it with Scrimshaw.

Shaping up as a disaster.

It’s bad enough that us big 4 clubs have to pump up the North Melbourne’s of the world, history suggests the Hawks will follow suit with a few lean years. Dangerous territory.

Yep, Hawks fans are historically huge bandwagoners.

Going to be plenty of pets without Hawks scarves the next few years.

When you factor in that Al "Clarko" Clarkson adds a good 5 to 6 goals to every team he coaches, you have to conclude that the Hawthorn list is complete defecation.

Ben Startton- worst AFL captain.
Tom Scully- endurance athlete that has absolutely nothing else to offer. Can run a lot but in shortened games, so can everybody else.
WORPEDO!!- probably the worst rising star winner of all time.
Burgoyne- A Legend. But cooked now.
Tom Mitchell- the words "shane woewodin" come to mind. :$
Will Day- looks pretty good. Probably because the other 21 players around him look absolutely dreadful.
Brendon Bolton- Gold medal for "most useless signing of an ex-coach". Thought Dees had this one locked in with Al Richardson but there you go.
O'Meara- was supposed to be a superstar. Sadly looks acceptable at best.
Patton- was also supposed to be a superstar, but is broken
Chud Wingehard- flashy goal sneak who looks a million dollars in a good team. Can't remember him digging in when things go bad. Overpaid.

Clarko's list is terrible and he sooks more than both of the Scott brothers combined.

They're in trouble.

Round 1 2021:

Burgoyne - 38 (retired)
Puopolo - 33
Henderson - 32
Frawley - 32
Smith - 32
Stratton - 32
McEvoy - 31
Brooksby - 30
Breust - 30
Ceglar - 30
Shiels - 29
Scully - 29
Gunston - 29

Draft picks: 4, 21, 41, 44, 59, 71

With the likelihood of list reductions, I’d say half of those players will retire.

I really don’t get this logic at all. Burton is the ultimate utility and can play in all parts of the ground. It’s not as though he wouldn’t be getting a game with Sicily and Scrimshaw (who I am certain he is currently better than and has as much upside) also in the team.

Just seems Hawthorn supporters are still trying to justify flinging him despite his obvious talent and reasonable form at Port Adelaide.

Not only will you miss out on the best KPF in the draft (JUH) you will also miss out on the second best as well. Thilthorpe is guaranteed to be heading to Adelaide 😂
Magma tells me he reckons Thilthorpe is better than Rankine from West Adelaide.
Lucky Crows.

Correct...if you go through the list of our players 23 and under it is incredibly grim..there is not a single player on the list I can see that will be a “star” of the competition...there’s 23 players on the list below and we will be lucky if 5 have successful AFL careers and play 100+ games.

Love what will day has shown, but he isn’t a “superstar” type of player. Every club has a Will day if not, 3 or 4.

Worpel is the same. Will be a solid 200 game player, but he’s just going to be a decent inside midfielder.

Hardwick is solid but in a poor team like ours will be exposed badly like he was today against Papley.

Not pretty, but assuming they all play on, including Burgoyne, isn't it the same number of 30+ players that the Cats will have by round 1 next year (assuming all their players go on)?

Today was huge for a lot of people still hurting from 5 years ago. A lot of the regulars itt get more excitement from hawks losing than they do their own team winning. Which is fine btw, im not going to judge.

We suck right now but our list is in a good position to recover with our best players (gunston aside) still 24-26.

Our time will come again in a year or two, its the nature of the beast. Some teams capitalise on their time in the sun, some dont. I just hope we continue to avoid wasting our time up top like so many other teams do when it is their turn.
