Can Hawthorn succeed while ignoring the elite end of the draft?

It’s ok this still won’t warrant a truckload of chicken s##t being dumped at headquarters or 000’s of membership cards nuked in microwaves like at other pathetic clubs which have done little over the last 40 years!
Well I think you touch on the issue the Hawks worry about- maintaining supporter engagement in lean times (never a problem at the Tiges!).

As you say, financially you will always have a white knight when necessary, but white knights can't stop your rank-and-file voting you into a merger a la the 1990s.

Maybe this is why Clarko tops up every year to stay middle-of-the-road, instead of drafting?

Well is they are massively overrated why do you want them?
We don't.
Bigfooty: Hawthorn sold its soul by trading out club legends Hodge, Mitchell and Lewis to make way for a new midfield.

Also Bigfooty: Hawthorn should trade out club legends Breust, Gunston etc for first round draft picks.

Never change Bigfooty, never change.
This was the post you took issue with. No Hawthorn supporter suggested that we should trade them

Hawthorn voted no to the merger

Other supporters - 'you can't keep trading out 1st round picks, you need elite '1st round' talent'

Clarko trades out 4 years' worth of 1st round picks and brings in:
Mitchell @ age 23 (pick 14)
O'Maera @ age 23 ('mini-draft' pick 1 - would clearly have been top 5 if he went to normal draft)
Wingard @ age 25 (pick 6)
Scully @ age 27 (pick 1)
Scrimshaw @ age 21 (pick 7)

Other supporters - 'no, you need to bring them in as 18 year olds or it doesn't count'

So good.

Absolutely nailed it.

I did not take issue with it accept in asking who was advocating such a trade for such outcomes?

Can you provide examples? You say no Hawthorn supporter. So it must be supporters of other clubs. Who are they?

it feels like perhaps you are intentionally being obtuse. I did not say they hold no value (or even that I wanted to trade) -
I suggested YOU must overrate them if you think one of the best small forwards of the modern era would not fetch even a pick in the teens (despite countless examples of lesser players being traded for these or better picks).

I'm not saying he doesn't go hard or that he isn't talented. I question whether someone who doesn't give their best because they were drafted to an interstate club, has the mentality to be a top line AFL player in the long term

I'd suggest as an 18-19 yo he did give his best, had some setbacks, even signed a contract extension. But at the end of the day and this is not isolated to Scrimshaw the club failed him. He realized it was best for him to exit rather than be wasted in NEAFL level football.

You can happily wear failure like a badge of honour. Its not for us

When did it become morally repugnant to go as hard as you can for your club every year? Many have happily bought a pocket of piss from the AFL it seems

Wingard is on 600,000. There are other Hawthorn players earning more money. Nice try though.

Dogs fans said the same thing during the early-mid 2000s about how their list was packed to the brim with youth and high draft picks. How did that work out?

That strategy has worked out so well for Carlton, Essendon, St Kilda and Melbourne. Every year we hear the same crap trotted out. How many Premierships do those teams have to show for years of mediocrity? ZERO

You can have the Bulldogs finishing above the Hawks on the ladder this year. Last time I checked teams were judged on final ladder position and not Premierships won. :moustache:
Lels @ hubris. So much arrogance. Lewis tracking same as NAUGHTON. Brisbane had a 3 peat too with a much better team btw but they bottomed out too. It's your time.

It takes a rare talent to contradict oneself in consecutive sentences.

****ing brilliant.

That’s simply not true. Despite Scrimshaw having an injury plagued season he is still averaging more contested possessions and contested marks than Burton.

I can tell you right now having seen him play live numerous times that Scrimshaw isn’t soft. Sure he is inconsistent but when it’s his turn to go he’ll go.

I reckon Scrimshaw has looked pretty good for you guys.

Still needs to build his tank as every game I watched (About 4) he started strong and was invisible in the second half.

Don't really like the Burton comparisons Hawthorn fans throw out as they seem different players. (I understand why because both will be half back flankers)

Derp.

Hey dummy I never said Lewis was better than Naughton. One plays as a forward/2nd ruck whilst the other is a utility.

I honestly couldn’t care if Hawthorn don’t win another Premiership for a while or whether they completely bottom out. As a supporter I have seen 5!

Now as for Brisbane being better they won 3 flags and played in 4 Grand Finals. Hawthorn won 4 flags, played in 5 Grand Finals and have made the top four 7 times under Clarkson. Who was better for longer and had a more dominant period of sustained success? It certainly wasn’t Brisbane. :)

Hawthorn had arguably the greatest forward-line in AFL history from 2011-2015. The Hawks also had a better back six. The Lions had a better midfield. That’s it.

And yet you wonder about my replies. Go figure eh.

Personally I think this year that Hawks will try and swap Pick 5-ish (plus extra) for Hill or Cogs. They may not succeed of course.

Don't be mad because it went over your head, and Hawks will not cough up pick 5-ish for Brad Hill.
