Perhaps you just massively overrate first round draft picks. .
Well if they are massively overrated why do you want them?

Gunston, Bruest and Smith all go first round picks for teams wanting to win the flag... if they are smart.
Well I think you touch on the issue the Hawks worry about- maintaining supporter engagement in lean times (never a problem at the Tiges!).It’s ok this still won’t warrant a truckload of chicken s##t being dumped at headquarters or 000’s of membership cards nuked in microwaves like at other pathetic clubs which have done little over the last 40 years!
We don't.Well is they are massively overrated why do you want them?
This was the post you took issue with. No Hawthorn supporter suggested that we should trade themBigfooty: Hawthorn sold its soul by trading out club legends Hodge, Mitchell and Lewis to make way for a new midfield.
Also Bigfooty: Hawthorn should trade out club legends Breust, Gunston etc for first round draft picks.
Never change Bigfooty, never change.

Hawthorn voted no to the mergerWell I think you touch on the issue the Hawks worry about- maintaining supporter engagement in lean times (never a problem at the Tiges!).
As you say, financially you will always have a white knight when necessary, but white knights can't stop your rank-and-file voting you into a merger a la the 1990s.
Maybe this is why Clarko tops up every year to stay middle-of-the-road, instead of drafting?
Other supporters - 'you can't keep trading out 1st round picks, you need elite '1st round' talent'
Clarko trades out 4 years' worth of 1st round picks and brings in:
Mitchell @ age 23 (pick 14)
O'Maera @ age 23 ('mini-draft' pick 1 - would clearly have been top 5 if he went to normal draft)
Wingard @ age 25 (pick 6)
Scully @ age 27 (pick 1)
Scrimshaw @ age 21 (pick 7)
Other supporters - 'no, you need to bring them in as 18 year olds or it doesn't count'
I did not take issue with it accept in asking who was advocating such a trade for such outcomes? We don't.

I'm not saying he doesn't go hard or that he isn't talented. I question whether someone who doesn't give their best because they were drafted to an interstate club, has the mentality to be a top line AFL player in the long term

Can you provide examples? You say no Hawthorn supporter. So it must be supporters of other clubs. Who are they?

Lels @ hubris. So much arrogance. Lewis tracking same as NAUGHTON. Brisbane had a 3 peat too with a much better team btw but they bottomed out too. It's your time.Wingard is on 600,000. There are other Hawthorn players earning more money. Nice try though.
Dogs fans said the same thing during the early-mid 2000s about how their list was packed to the brim with youth and high draft picks. How did that work out?
That strategy has worked out so well for Carlton, Essendon, St Kilda and Melbourne. Every year we hear the same crap trotted out. How many Premierships do those teams have to show for years of mediocrity? ZERO
You can have the Bulldogs finishing above the Hawks on the ladder this year. Last time I checked teams were judged on final ladder position and not Premierships won.![]()

Superb work from WWSDIt takes a rare talent to contradict oneself in consecutive sentences.

Dogs won with pretty much no top 10 draftees

That’s simply not true. Despite Scrimshaw having an injury plagued season he is still averaging more contested possessions and contested marks than Burton.
I can tell you right now having seen him play live numerous times that Scrimshaw isn’t soft. Sure he is inconsistent but when it’s his turn to go he’ll go.
Yeah, nah. Hawthorn supporters voted against merging with Melbourne. As you say, financially you will always have a white knight when necessary, but white knights can't stop your rank-and-file voting you into a merger a la the 1990s.

huhThat ‘better team’ were also spooners in ‘98. Very versatile

And yet you wonder about my replies. Go figure eh.
Personally I think this year that Hawks will try and swap Pick 5-ish (plus extra) for Hill or Cogs. They may not succeed of course.
