Can Hawthorn succeed while ignoring the elite end of the draft?

The Hawks average age is “misleading”. For example the following players below aren’t in the best 22 but they bump that average age up slightly and they will be off the list next month being replaced by Patton (26), Frost (26) and a number of 18-19 year olds via the national draft.

There is also the possibility of the Hawks trading out some senior players come this trade period which should see that age demographic go down.

Birchall 31
Puopolo 31
Schoenmakers 29
Mirra 28
Mohr 31
Minchington 26

List age isn't really a useful measure. My figures only include players who actually play.

Given Birchall's last three years and Puopolo's 2019 season, I doubt those players will fetch much if anything in a trade. Maybe a token late selection for Birchall.

Interesting turn of phrase which has been used in various forms in the media.

No team suddenly says "we need to reduce our age profile" without performance suffering first. Performance is the driver; age is just a measure.

Pretty much the entire midfield retired or was moved on

Anyway the aim is to stay strong or get stronger, the demographic is a follower not a driver

Peter Crimmins Medal (Hawks B&F) currently a little over half-way done.

Henderson (31), McEvoy (29) both in top-10 - rest are all 28 or under. Worpel (20) looks like winning it.

Curious to see how the end result compares with the "younger" sides.

ΥΕΑ Ι know

Hawthorn haven’t won a final in 4 years cant attract an A grade free agent, are the oldest team in the league and finished ninth,
Have I missed anything ?

Two premierships in 38 years and we are all experts now! Prefer to listen to the opinion of the best coach in the comp and one of the best ever on how the Hawks transformation since its three peat is travelling compared to a whole bunch of BF buffoons.

Hopefully for Hawthorn sake there are enough people like you who don’t need any facts to reinforce your blind faith

Stay strong brother

It’s very simple I believe Clarko more than a bunch of BF buffoons sister.

Sounds like for our sake you should coach the Hawks. You know more about the caper than blind man Clarko. Keep it up!

Worpel is the equivalent of a first round pick. As it currently stands he is the 2nd best player in the 2017 draft behind Tim Kelly!

Sicily is also the equivalent of a first round pick!

Hardwick who was pick 44 in 2016 was voted in the AFL best under 22 team.

:$

As much as I love a Hawks pile on this thread is rubbish. If a club like Hawthorn can trade in known talents (Mitchell, Wingard etc) and develop players like Worpel and Sicily then you can keep your elite draft picks like McGrath and Francis.

French film director Jean Luc Goddard or Saints and Essendon flog Brendan goddard?
The pretzel toucher said this mid-year when Worpel was killing it.

Well then why didn’t hawthorn do better?

I will tell you why, they are not very good, and old. This is not a good combination

Statistically its marginally better than being not very good and young though.

There's simply no evidence that there's any advantage in being 9th and having the youngest list or being 9th and having the oldest list. Your chances of improving or declining are the same.

Looking at the BnF results they are in strife. 6 of the top 10 only have a few years left. I reckon they'll finish 12th to 8th next year then drop off
5 of the top 6 25 or under. 2 solid KPP ins in Frost and Patton. Chad to play as a full time mid with Tom Mitchell returning next year. Scrimshaw and Lewis types should be better again next year. Reckon we'll be ok.

No wonder Richmond won the GF. They came up against a team that had been thumped twice during the year by a team that is not very good.

it is also a pity that Eagles got thumped in the final home and away round by the same not very good team. We might have had a better grand final if Eagles had made top 4 and met Richmond in a GF, given Richmond had only beaten WC at the MCG in round 22 by 6 points , more than 6 times less than what the not very good team beat them by in Perth the following week.

Bullshit call. BnF winner is 20. Sicily, JOM top 5. Hardwick was 2nd last year. Lewis and Scrimshaw will be jets. We're about to add Finn and potentially pick 11. We're turning over our age profile as we speak.

Goddard must make an official (and humiliating) apology
