Can Hawthorn succeed while ignoring the elite end of the draft?

Yes entitlement. You go through everyone's list with targets and then assume you're getting them because Hawthorn.

It's simply my observation.

'Whitfield was a Hawthorn supporter so we're entitled to him'. Then assume he's yours as a result.
We are always supposedly unaware of 'Wrighty's' master plan while 50 ITK posters tell us how every uncontracted player is headed to Hawthorn. It's laughably perpetuated by these unironic posters.

The emergence of youngsters Ross, Walker and Jones next year will add depth and elevate Hawks towards top 4 next year. Where were these guys taken in the draft? Some of the oldies still playing are holding us back.

Every clubs supporters have trade threads , discuss targets and post on the draft board. Every club.
They they do but most other clubs don't just assume every player they want is automatically coming to their club like Hawthorn supporters do.

The point I'm trying to make. I'm glad someone else sees it.

Most Hawthorn supporters don’t either. Me thinks you’re just seeing what you want to see.

Absolutely not. I'm neutral here and actually on your side in regards to the premise of this thread.

It's simply my observations like I said.

I dont think i give off the impression that i assume every player is automatically coming to Hawthorn.

But i do love speculating about trades, playing list manager. Hypothetical trades what we could offer get in return etc...

Is this being revived as entitlement?

Well, I’ve seen plenty of trade threads where Hawthorn are known as an interested party and Hawks posters aren’t automaically suggesting the player will join us in majority of cases, they’re just simply spitballing about how a player could or why a player might...no different to any other clubs posters.

Seemingly so.

Trying to hold people accountable as if this is journalistic material you're paying for. Not just casual footy fans posting on a whim to stay entertained.

So you didn't assume Amon was coming to Hawthorn?

Me. I'd rather draft our own. I've said that time and time again.

It's why I rate our 07-11 era as the best I've seen.
Thing is though it's somewhat unrealistic not to expect some players coming in from other clubs to top up list.

I would suggest that you be hard pressed to find any premiership team that hasn't done it to some extent.

Even through the Cats golden period you had Ottens, Mooney and Harley coming from other clubs (maybe some more - i'm not sure). All were fairly pivotal to you success.

It's very hard to draft and develop a full list from scratch to a premiership.

Draft for the best available and trade for a need?

Mooney and Harley had only played a handful of games combined when they were traded in and were considered speculative selections. Ottens was the only household name we got from another club. The rest were drafted. Very few high draft picks which is why there's an easy answer to the thread title, and it's yes.

You've taken one post out of 12 months of Cogs discussion.

As you would know, I had a ton of mail that said he was coming until Gil stepped in. As did other Hawk posters. Many had similar mail. Much of it was contrary to what happened which suggested we were played by his manager in the last week.

Oh well, we move on now.

What are the Dons trade moves? Jack Martin yeah?

Lol.

Mail.

Or the youngsters aren’t pushing the oldies out.
Hawks system of serving an apprenticeship versus no system at most other clubs!

Many of the soft mids at Bombers wouldn’t get a game at the Hawks or would be regularly dropped until they can prove that they can put their head over the ball playing for BH first.

Time will tell if they’ve got the mixture right. Losing Mitchell for the year didn’t help but most clubs have injuries. I’m not sure of Hawthorn’s depth.

Clarko is a genius though.
Will be very important that some of the younger guys on our list can pull through to become quality depth players.

Players like Howe(62), Cousins(19), Morrison(31), Nash(19), Glass(17), Walker(0), Ross(0), Jones(0), Koschitzke(0), CJ(2), Hanrahan(9)

need some of these blokes to become regulars, and get roughly 50 games under the belt

If 4/5 of these blokes are regulars in the senior side in 3 years, say Howe, Cousins, Nash, Hanrahan and Ross, then we'll be in a much better position depth wise.

Or the youngsters aren’t pushing the oldies out.
It’s a little bit of both.

Clarko does love his experienced players and he gives them every chance to find form.

Some of the younger blokes just can’t compete at a consistent level, so they crack 2-3 games and then go back to Box Hill.

We don’t have a great deal of experienced depth at the moment(you’re either in the team and 25+ or your 18-22 and playing at box hill), so when we lost Burgoyne and Shiels in-game early in the year on top of Mitchell we all of a sudden had O’meara and two 20yr olds as our starting Mids for a period of time, which hurt our season.

1 key forward and 1 key defender and things can change. Expect Gunston, Sicily and O’Meara to have better seasons next year.

Another pacey midfielder wouldn't go astray for the Hawks either.

If you can shop Isaac Smith to the Suns for a 2nd round pick, that would be a tidy piece of business by Hawthorn

Yeah apparently the Suns are prepared to offer pick 19 or whatever it is which is way overs. The Suns are desperate for players though so they might be keen on slightly overpaying. If the trade goes down I would laugh if that happens. The problem is convincing player x or y to go there.
