Im not sure whether we are a top 4 side.

It was comprehensive today, Im not if your coach works well under pressure.

There was no response to our plans. Not a dig just a topic for discussion.

Craig and co didn't have a great day, but it's very difficult to do that when you've got V8 engines running at 1 candle power.

One move that I was calling for early that took almost another half before it happened - nearly happened - was for Tippett to ruck given that he wasn't firing early at FF and for McKernan to take the goalfront.

He started Tippett in ruck at the first centre bounce of the 3rd quarter, but put Maric at FF and that was plain silly given he wasn't playing well and is not an athletic mobile type.

Im not talking about match-ups soley.

There's just no creativity in terms of game styles, when it isnt working there's nothing up his sleeve.

It must be an undeniable belief he has in this heavy zone defense, I thought we carved it up quite easily today and played on more than most weeks to unsettle your style.

Getting back to your match up queries, when does it become obvious that Hill is a key architect and not bound by zone defences.

I dont know, Im just not sure if he's the guy to win you your 3rd flag.

He had some ordinary decisions, but the way a lot of the players were playing today no game plan could have worked.

I don't think it's time for panis stations as such seen as we are still a young side, the talk of top 4 was still a bit prelature for mine. But the one thing we generally pride ourselves on is being very competitive, and today was shocking.

The skills, the attack; the accountability, was all shocking. Inconsistencies are expected but every week should be full on committment to the contest, the man, and today was well below par.

We really need to work on how we enter the 50 as well. Sometime soon surely we will realise kicking to 2 on 1 or worse is stupid. The amount of times we just bang it in is so frustrating. Tippett will always contest, but we need to be much quicker moving in to the forward 50 and actually LOOK and have forwards moving. It's incredibly frustrating to watch today.

Today was an embarrassment, something we see quite often from this club. I can't recall a softer performance.

agree, to make finals we need to win at least 90% of our home games, and snag a few away .Dropping one so early in such disapointing fashion is not a good start.
we need to come to play against port or were in deep shit imo.

Normally I think you go over the top, but that's what Craig said, and that's what I saw in the first half.

A soft as butter, no desperation team, that cracked like an egg under pressure in the first half.

Teams should come out and start the game with a fierceness and hardness at both the man and the ball - it sets the tone for the day.

With the exception of a handful of players we came out meekly, prepared to chase arse, without catching it!!

I was bitterly disappointed with our first half - it was rubbish from a team that has about 300% more talent than it showed.

We had a quarter of similar rubbish from the players last week, but to their credit they came back with enough ferocity, tenacity and hardness to win the game.

They were inept today, and I don't want to hear the injury excuse. Our ineptness was at its extreme in the first quarter.

I sat there thinking why does a man pay money to watch this rubbish - which it was.

Keep that sort of shit up Adelaide and we'll end up with crowds like Port Power. That first half standard served up by the players is not acceptable.

Craig doesn't escape either. It's HIS team that are coming out like timid mice early in both games so far.

Am I pissed off?? Yes I am, and NO supporter should accept that sort of garbage being served up by our team!! :thumbsd:

Ohhh wow weee havent you changed your tune quickly:rolleyes:

What you seriously didnt expect this season to be like this? You clearly got a smack in the chops yesterday of what the season is going to be like.

We wont play that poorly again.

Good to get such a game out of the way early.

Craigy's comments identifying the glaring issue and saying they will work on it at training was a positive.

Will count for nothing if we dont see a more compeitive side against Port Power. They will be at full tilit wanting to knock us off. Winning a Showdown is all they have to look forward to this year, and next few yerars IMO. We need to bring back the second half against Hawthorn form if we want to win.

I suggest you go and watch some of the games from last year - particularly the outings against Carlton and North Melbourne.
Im not sure whether we are a top 4 side.
I'm not sure you are either - but I am sure that you're better than our 1st round victims (Hawthorn). The Hawthorn hype machine would have you believe that they're the next best thing behind Collingwood. I'd back Freo ahead of them any day of the week.

No, I haven't changed my tune, smartarse.

Unlike you, I don't carry on like a pork chop every time we lose.

If we have given it everything we've got and lose, so be it.

However, read back, and you'll find the one non-negotiable always with me is effort and intensity - I will not accept piss weak, half arsed efforts like we saw in the first half yesterday without comment.

And unlike you, I don't expect our season to be like this and I don't think it will be.

Now, back in your box you go, sunshine.

Accepting mediocrity very early BACCS, you clown.

Where on earth did I say that I accepted yesterday's performance? I simply wanted to make a point that only 2 rounds have been played, where we have been awful in one, and pretty good in the other. Judgment calls on the season are way too premature, and that is what this thread is about.

How about reading the OP for once and retorting with something other than a personal dig?

Take out of the equasion the one good quarter we apparantly had against Hawthorn and how diifferent are we really from last year after 2 rounds?

I'm hearing the exact same descriptions of our performance as the injury toll mounts.....History repeating?

I was gonna post my thoughts, but you've beaten me to it.

May have beaten me to another post as well.....

I don't buy this, "we have only played 2 good quarters" argument. We are not Collingwood where we can go out expecting to win every quarter. Its very rare that team does that unless they are just a super side.

The momentum in the game will oscillate, both teams will have patches where they dominate but all that matters is that you are in front on the scoreboard at the end of the game.

Even considering how crap we played yesterday, we were only really outplayed in the first quarter.

People expecting us to win every quarter are not being realistic.

Love the over-reaction on here.... Classic.... After Rd.1 we were the only challengers to Collingwood now we are the going to be battling Port and the Suns for the Spoon.... I hope we get a draw soon so we can get some measured responses...

Our team is a very young team and we are going to experience some very big ups and downs this year... Yes, you can say that losing our 1,300 hundred games of experience won't hurt because we played our best footy with those guys out - but their influence on the training track, around the club and even when on the field and playing badly has a massive effect on the younger players... We lack leadership and experience -this will take time...

Plus add in the fact that we lost Porps / Doughty / Sloane / Mackay from RD. 1 and were playing a possible top 4 side whose biggest strength (ruck) is one of our weaknesses.... We lost by only 24 points and were competitive for 3 quarters...

Lets just hope that our injury list stops growing or else we are going to be selecting Jimmy Sellars pretty quickly :D

We have played 2 games, yes, TWO! It is amazing how many people are ready to call off a season after one poor game. All clubs have them from time to time, especially young sides like ours. I expect us to bounce back against a pathetic Port side next week, and when we do, everyone will have us as a top 4 contender again. Time to get a grip, and start judging our season after we have played a few games.

you ask for perspective, yet stick your in the sand and pretend these 2 games happen in a vacuum without reference to past history.

that's not perspective, that's self pleasuring.

the real fact of the matter is this performance was cut from the same cloth as many of early season performances last season - a lack of intensity and competitiveness.

as many people said last year, it's not the results its the lack of competiveness. something abundantly on display yesterday.

and don't waste my time telling me that a young team can't give its all. inexperience might impact the outcome, not the endeavour. ****, I expect greater effort, higher intensity from a young team.

In a faster game with less people, getting off to a good start is going to mean more...like not chasing tail all game.

We werent switched on and Craig must take some of the blame. He better have em up this week injury or not...no excuses

Yesterday's game was nothing like our 2010 performances. About the only thing the games had in common was the final result (ie a loss).

Here's some perspective:

Adelaide 10 - Fremantle - 11
23yo - Tippett, Ballantyne, Lower
22yo - Henderson, Martin, Mayne, Palmer
21yo - Dangerfield, Jaensch, Otten, de Boar
20yo - Davis, McKernan, Walker, Hill, Suban, Walters
19yo - Smith, Fyfe, Roberton
18yo - Pitt

Didn't think our intensity was that bad yeserday. Certainly in the first quarter it was very poor and taht cost us the game when they had teh wind and the man mountain Sandilands.

More concerning was our constant fumbling and lack of tactical nouse. Certainly not throwing the baby out with the bath water yet.

One real worry is that four playes who improvement from last year was coming from have been struck down by injury. Makes it much harder.

Next week is BIG game.

nonsense, that's just clutching at straws.

it was eerily similar, a complete lack of intensity.
The lack of intensity was bad in the first quarter. It wasn't great for the rest of the game, but it wasn't horrible - and the fact that we actually won the last 3 quarters is a testament to this.

However, this performance was nowhere near as bad as the lack of intensity (or anything else) shown by the team in the Carlton & North Melbourne games last year. The difference is like chalk & cheese.

Kidding yourself I think mate. The inability to compete was a dead copy of some of the efforts last year.

I've seen your thoughts that we didn't resort to handballing in cricles but stuck to our 'new' game plan of getting the boot on the ball and going forward. I'd like to challenge your thinking on that. Its exactly the same as last year... we have a game plan... and when we are struggling we don't deviate from it. Sure, the game plan might be different but the ability to react to the game getting away from us is exactly the same.
