Cannons wouldnt mind seing a similar report on Dean Bailey as you are doing on the players!

Yeah, that's a good idea. After the players have been evaluated I'll complete a report on Bailey ;)

Mark Jamar

Current Ability: C+
Jamar played 14 matches in 2008, collecting career-best figures in disposals and hit-outs. He averaged 18 hit-outs per match and 8 possessions.

Strengths:
- Size
- Ruckwork
- Tackling
- Work rate
- Competitive

Weaknesses:
- Does not get much of the ball
- Disposal
- Offers little around the ground
- Lacks confidence with the ball in his hands

Potential Ability: B-
I don’t see too much improvement left in Mark’s game, considering he has been on the list for 7 years. However, ruckman do take longer to develop, and he will benefit from increased game time due to White’s departure.

He is very physical. Mark lays a lot of tackles, works hard and is a great competitor. Unfortunately, he doesn’t get much of the ball around the ground, and this minimises his overall impact on the game. I don’t think he will ever excel at this part of the game, but this is an area in which he will need to lift his output. If he can do this, he will enhance his value to the club.

He also lacks confidence when the ball is in his hands, perhaps this is due to his skills. Jamar rarely looks to kick, and always attempts to dish off the handball. At times, he makes little effort to sum up the situation and just looks to move the ball by hand. This is illustrated by the fact he averages fewer than 2 kicks per game. If Mark can find some confidence in his foot skills, and actually assess his options his production could be improved greatly.

His ruckwork is impressive, and he is among the best ruckman for hit-outs to advantage. His competitive drive and physicality around the stoppages are also features of his game.

Trade Value: 3rd rounder

Overall, Mark had a reasonable year. Despite encouraging results, he still has a lot of work to do on his game. Whilst he offers a strong physical presence, he needs to work harder to have an influence around the ground. 2009 shapes as an important year, especially as he is now the club’s most senior ruckman.

Doubt that you would put Jamar in the same potential catergory as Frawley and Dunn.

Still over-rating our players.

A C+ is a pass. I'd only have passed a handful of players, and Jamar is not one of them.

What exactly did Jamar do wrong during the season? Sure he is a terrible footballer, but he did enough to justify his position in the team imo, and shouldn't that be a pass?

Nope.

I'd rate him as the honest battler, never good enough but he tries hard. You'd give him a pat on the back, but he stills get a D.

I'm inclined to agree with you. He performed his role to a reasonable degree and his ruckwork was good. He needs to win the ball around the ground more often, there is no doubt, but he has some ability at AFL level. This is illustrated by the fact he attracted attention during trade week, not to mention his ability to play regularly for Melbourne.

Not a world beater, but he did enought to justify a 'pass' as you put it BC.

On a side note, apologies for the lack of updates recently, times are a bit busy as of now. I will continue to post evaluations in this thread, however it will be in a somewhat spasmodic fashion.

Chris Johnson

Current Ability: C+
Johnson was an improver for Melbourne this year, and started to repay some of the faith the club has shown in him. He played 10 matches, mainly from half-back, and averaged around 20 disposals. He also suffered a late-season injury, which ended his year prematurely.

Strengths:
- Kicking
- Collects possessions regularly
- Good football brain
- Held his opponents quite well this season

Weaknesses:
- Size
- Physicality
- Seems to have minimal aggression

Potential Ability: B+
He is another one of Melbourne’s players that has plenty of ability, but he needs to channel it more effectively. One thing that does separate him from his teammates though, is his ability to kick the ball. He also moves and positions himself well. Whilst it would be too generous to label his defensive skills as a strong point of his game, he did a pretty good job on his direct opponents for the most part. That isn’t to say he excels in this area, and he should certainly aim to improve it if he wants to succeed in defence.

One thing which may cause issues is his size. He has a relatively small frame and this is unlikely to change, given how long he has been on the list. His ectomorphic frame makes it difficult for him to bulk up too. To counteract this, he needs to play with more aggression and desire than he currently does. He seems to be indifferent in his attitude towards the game at times, and this is somewhat detrimental to his game. If he can generate a shift towards a more aggressive and concentrated mindset in would serve him well. Moreover, he could add some more physicality to his game, and attack the contest in a stronger manner on occasion.

He also played with more consistency this year than in previous seasons, which is a definite positive. Whilst he has taken a lot of time to reach this point, it is promising to see such improvement in his game. The role across half-back also complements his range of abilities well.

Trade Value: 3rd rounder

Overall, Chris built upon 2007 and improved his output in 2008. However, there are still aspects of his game that require work; and 2009 shapes as an important season for his career and development.

Thanks for you honest assesement Cannons. I must admit this is the first time I checked out this tread as I thought it was About Calder Cannons LOL.

Are you an independant, / Who do you support.

You comments are pretty accurate FWIW.

CJ doesn't have a small frame, but more aggression wouldn't hurt. I really hope he plays the majority of the season next year.

He's my smokey for massive improver next year, even on the back of his good games this year. It's a massive call, but I can see him playing Hodge style games off half back.

Where are you Cannons??? I need more list evaluations!!!!!!!!!
