Simple poll. Would NM have benn as successful as what they were and won 2 premierships if Wayne Carey never played for them.

Who knows. But they were a great side at that time and still made a lot of finals series when he'd been out so as much as any side would miss a great player and arguably the greatest thats ever played, who knows. But if you're starting this poll to flame the Kangaroos fans it's a limp effort. It's been 40 years since Melbourne won a flag.

The reason Ive started this poll is because I was having an argument with a kangaroos supporter and I suggested that this was the case. He then said I was being disrespectful implying that the other players around the Duck were great players. I agree they were very good players, but Carey was the difference between a good finals side and a premiership side. Just to clarify things.

Im not sure what to make of this thread.
Is it a pathetic troll attempt, or is it a genuine question from a young newbie?

Well i think its the latter, and yes Carey was such an influence on my club, i still think we would have been a successful side in the 90s, but I dont think we would have won both flags.

Im not a newbie, and this is no disrespect to other very good players that were around in that era, but the Duck is 1 of the greats, and ive been watching football for 24 years, but IMO NM would not have been as good if Carey wasnt there.
As Ive said, its come about from an argument on another poll.

Well if you're talking about the Archer v Neitz thread, I've read it and I'm not sure what the argument is. I don't recall any of their supporters saying anything to the contrary. All they were saying is that they were a successful side when he was out of the side as well and I hate to break this to you, they were.

You must have missed something then.
But did they win the premiership without him, or even make a grand final?
No they didnt.
Like I said, he was the difference between being a good side who make the finals, and a side who wins the premiership.

Every side has players like that. Take Neitz out of Melbourne and they wouldn't even make the eight. Take Kernahan out of Carlton or Brereton out of Hawthorn and they would've suffered.

What is even the point of this debate?

He was a Kangaroos listed player, and I presume he was fit enough to play in those grand finals so he played. It's like saying if it wasn't for Carey blah blah blah. The fact is it's a lost argument because they had Carey.

So essentially what is being asked is, if you took arguably the greatest player of all time out of his team, would they be as good or as successful.

Am I the only one shaking my head?

Let me make this clear for you.
I said that if Carey never played for NM they wouldnt have won 2 flags.
Mark said, Carey didnt make a difference, as they had other players around that would still have won them the flag.
So therefore I have asked for a non biased opinion.
Now do you get it?
Its not that hard Jerry.
And Thewlis this is what Mark is suggesting, not me.

No, I said other players were also responsible for the flags, not just Carey. And Carey's performances in both grand finals were good but nothing out of the ordinary. If you're going to start a poll because you're all p1ssed off and foaming at the mouth, at least get it right.

Im not pissed off.
My argument was that throughout the season Carey was the difference.
You think they would have won regardless going by your comments.
Where am I wrong here Mark?

Of course we wouldn't have, just like Brisbane probably wouldn't have won three flags in a row without Voss, or Collingwood made two Grand Finals in a row without Buckley, or Port won in 2004 without Tredrea. Would Geelong have made all those GFs in the 90s without Ablett?

So do you think they'd have won without Carey then? Apparently only 1 person think so. I think it's a relevant poll, it's just that a whole bunch of you guys are retorting and not offering opinions. Trying to deflect eh?
