Very good article about Carl Peterson in The Age today. Explains why he had to be let go. Glad to see the club continues to support him. Good to see him get his life in order. Would be a big bonus if he came back to play next year . . . for us, that is.

It's interesting to hear how he punished himself for his errors and mistakes by disappearing. I know I've done that in past and one thing I've learned is that you can't run from your head.
He could still be a stella player - anywhere, but preferably for us - if he gets his head on right. Good article indeed.

I know there's a fair bit of angst directed at him, understand it too.

But sheesh he was good in big games last year - against the cats and pies. Sitting up in the Olympic stand Rd 22 last year I was in awe of some of the things he did.

Real shame it didn't work out. He would have been unbelievable after a year or two at the highest level.

There is some sort of rule that allows you to relist players from your club that miss a year but have no idea how that works, or even if it would survive the new CBA.

Whoops, forgot to mention that its great to hear that Carl is getting his life together as it sounds like he is a genuine guy and a real family man! You can only wish him well!

Hmmm, wonder if he will find his way back onto our rookie list :)

You get that feeling reading that don't you? That we've given him this year to develop some skills and that we'll look to get him back next year.

Seems like an extremely shy kid that struggled with the commitment of afl. Hope he has his life back together and HFC should be congratulated on their effort to help the young fellow. Hopefully can have another crack at afl but would really give me the shits if he played for another club, but then again it's not all about me, is it.

Good on him for getting his life on track but I don't think the club would gamble on him again. He wasn't popular amoungst the players and rightly so if he wasn't committed 100%. It would be hard to win the respect back from the leadership group and players I would think.

Are you sure about this?

My understanding was the opposite, personality wise at least.

His application may have frustrated some, but otherwise I believed he was extremely popular with all.

Fantastic to hear Carl getting his act together.. I imagine there are a number of kids in similar positions who possess the skills but lack the maturity and/or support network around them to be successful at AFL level. It would be especially prevalent with indigenous kids who have not grown up with the pressures and expectations of club footy preparing them (TAC/APS/AGSV etc).

I can't see him making it back at AFL level, but it is good to hear he is learning he can't run from his issues anymore.

Great to hear he's doing well, getting back to AFL football would be a bonus.

Not sure about this. Roughy and Lewis certainly like the kid, and they're the vice-captains, and clearly the club want to help him in life.

I thought it was Hooper who was not really well liked by the squad. Carl obviously would have to overcome some serious doubts about his commitment

I'm not too sure, I"m certainly not in the inner sanctum. I've just heard both those 2 mention Carl and both were genuinely happy he was doing well for himself. And the fact half the playing group hang Carl's artwork in their houses, I just don't think they'd dislike the bloke.

I would love to see Hawthorn recruit him again if Carl could guarantee his commitment to football, reading the article he seems to be on getting his life back on order.

Can't see him back at Hawthorn or even on another club's AFL list (unless it's GWS). He's had two chances at two different clubs and not made the most of them. In this day and age of the forward press, each player needs to understand and execute his role pretty much to perfection. Nice bloke though he undoubtedly is, Carl has never shown the aptitude to take on that responsibility.

Football is a ruthless business these days - you're 100% committed or you find something else to do.

is only if a player retires from AFL footy, not if they are delisted.

Really good read, and good to hear Michael Cooke has taken him under his wing. Sounds like Carl has found a niche for himself, i would be happy to see him given another chance to prove himself at AFL level, preferably at Hawthorn, the guy has a lot to offer the game.

At Carls first game of the season for Old Carey there was quite a few Hawthorn players there to watch him and the next day at the MCG Carl was down in the change rooms after the game with everyone making him feel very welcome.
What is good about this year is Carl's in the real world where you get up at 6.30am to go to work and your back home at 5.00pm and it's an everyday job. Its probably something most young AFL players should experience before they entre the world of AFL. The AFL world is a crazy pressured job both physically and mentally but it can also offers some great opportunites which you don't get in the everyday world.
