I think Smith has the potential to be another Chris Judd the way he bursts from stoppages and kicks goals on the run.I actually don’t think there will be many at all. I’d rather Smith, Rankine or Rozee but that’s not a knock on Walsh. There’s so much top end talent, and arguably a few options with more pure talent than Walsh in this draft pool it’s no surprise there are so many different views on who the best is. Especially as the top 5 or 6 are all very different players stylistically.

I love how you said "imagine" when describing Rankine lighting it up. I have no doubt Rankine is a type we need and he will become a very very good player, but if we choose him, watch him slowly adjust in year 1 to the rigors while Walsh racks up 15-20 touches a game with a few 25+ games along with a few goals... this board with do full circle and ask again why we didn't take the best midfielder and how much we lack depth in our midfield after just a few games. Theres more chance Rankine doesn't kick a goal in his first and also gets under 10 touches than the 4-5 goal imagination you can see.Walsh is definitely the safe bet however Rankine gives us something we desperately need, marketability and a badly needed boost in membership.
Everything about us over the last 3 years has been safe, game style, draft choices etc ( besides Charlie boy) maybe it’s time to take a chance and add some real excitement around the club, imagine the excitement around a Rd 1 debut for Rankine on the MCG in front of 90,000 and then just imagine if he comes out and kicks 4-5 goals and lights up the MCG with Charlie, Harry and the Governor and we beat the Tigers, or even if we lose the excitement around Carlton would go through the roof and get our profile back to where it should be.
We can’t discount this part of the equation when making our choice of who to take, yes Walsh is an extra cog in our midfield that is needed but really that’s it, in terms of outside influence other than being taken at no1 he doesn’t add a lot. Where as Rankine adds so much more in terms of outside influence with his brash exciting dangerous style, he is a marketers wet dream especially combined with Charlie. Imagine how many articles and stories will be written about Rankine and Carlton. With the extra attention he will draw to our club I feel it is worth the risk of taking Rankine at pick 1. And honestly I see him as an Akermanis type player in the future with time in midfield as well as forward and a lot of time spent removing his foot from his mouth.

Setterfield added to the mix is also huge. I see him as a player that may become a little Bont like. If we can get the best out of him, we really have had a super 2018 off season. Plus i believe Kennedy is only just beginning to find his feet. Look outCripps, Dow and Walsh will be a fair starting midfield in a few years time.
And a few 25+ games and a few goals isn’t imagination I suppose.I love how you said "imagine" when describing Rankine lighting it up. Walsh is the right choice at 1. He will form a dynamic and very successful midfield group with the likes of Dow, Cripps, Setterfield, kennedy, Fisher, LOB, SPS etc for the next 10 years. We all lost our minds when talk went around Cripps wants help and people think if we don't get him more help, he will leave our club and go back to WA, his career maybe cut short (i actually dont believe either of these). We have murphy most likely done come the end of next year, Ed getting to 30 next year. Setterfield and best mid in this draft is/was a high priority.
I think some people want Rankine because maybe they think this rebuild is done. Its really not. There are many still going out the door. Rankine would be awesome, but to me, not this year. Maybe next. We need games into our midfield asap so they can learn each others game.
Welcome Walsh. I look forward to 200+ games of skill, courage, leadership and a hunger for the game and our mighty club!

Mitch McGovern better perform and be worth it.
Would have loved to snag someone like McHenry around pick 30 but with no picks after 1, no chance.
Totally agree on both Setterfield and Kennedy who carried injuries right through the year as well as an interrupted pre season. Think Kennedy will make big in roads next year if fit.Setterfield added to the mix is also huge. I see him as a player that may become a little Bont like. How many times......... He's justI am a very big Walsh fan, however one query I have is his kicking execution.
I think he kicks extremely cleverly. He always tries to kick to advantage (or space if necessary). However I don't often see him nailing his targets.
I have the feeling he is trying too much, working too hard to perfectly place/weight his kicks. In some cases, it might even be the receiver's fault for not running to the right spot.
What's the deal, talent spotters? Does he try a little too much (which can be fixed with coaching) or does his kicking lack polish (which is harder to fix)?

Charlie Curnow?
How many marketable players did West Coast have this year?
I do not care what his highlights are. I've seen him play already. What I want to see is what he does from here to justify not having a pick between 1 and 30 in this draft. I got to trust I will see why in the future.

Yes, it is just my personal concern of why the need to trade for McGovern. I was not for it as feel we got more need of mids and small forwards than talls. But, I am open to seeing what the reasons for the trade in the future. Hence I am keen to see him perform as won't be impressed if he adds nothing and we still short of needs for small forwards and mids. Would have liked some picks between 1 and 69. Lets hope McGovern performs to show why we have none after pick 1.Is that not the case for everyone?
Any ideas on the type/guys we're looking at with the other late pick, Waite_30 ?Ben Silvagni will be taken at pick 69

How do you think that'll translate to AFL where the game is much more contested and takes away the room he currently has to kick into?I actually think he is a very good kick, despite perhaps lacking the punch of other players.
He seems to have already adapted to his limitations, which is extremely rare at his age.
Walsh weighs his kicks very well and when he does miss a target, it is still to the advantage of his teammates
