I do not care what his highlights are. I've seen him play already. What I want to see is what he does from here to justify not having a pick between 1 and 30 in this draft. I got to trust I will see why in the future.

I think what all of us tend to do is attribute more value to a pick (i.e potential) than for the player you've traded that pick for.

We effectively gave up #13 for McGovern. Which player from 13 - 20 from last year would you have sooner than him, right now?

I feel that puts things into a little better perspective.

You’re projecting just as much by building up what kind of specific impact Walsh will have in his few year. I think he will have a similar year to Andrew Brayshaw’s first season minus a broken jaw: mostly possession numbers in the teens (with a few bigger games) and a heap of defensive running and an emphasis on sticking to the basics. Rankine, in my view, would at worst parallel Rayner’s first year but may even surpass it.

Walsh won’t have a significant impact as an inside midfielder for at least a few seasons. He’s incredibly slight, and he’s more useful on the outside anyway. Kennedy and Setterfield will be the ones we will look to to really step up and assist Cripps, though they’re still very early in their development too.
I dunno it wouldn't surprise me if he averages 20 in his first season if given similar opportunities as say Dow was. Parish managed 20 and Walsh is just as physically developed as him. We are probably due to have a high end kid come on and perform early

That's only from pick 56 onwards?

I read a hypothetical in an article where a Giants player gets a bid at 16, they can match with 25 and 52 and spend 19.

I swear the AFL were trying to curb this a little a year or two back. Making it up on the fly again.

We do not have a pick between 1 and 69. That is directly related to the McGovern trade. The perspective is just fine. He will either prove it was worth doing or not. I look forward to seeing the wisdom of the trade reveal itself in time. At the moment with draft on, I feeling the missing picks in round 2 and 3 more.

And a few 25+ games and a few goals isn’t imagination I suppose.
Id say realistic. Dow averaged 14 possessions in a depleted midfield with 7 goals. 1 of his games he collected 20 possessions.

I rate Walsh a better player at the same stage and he will have a better midfield around him helping him out as compared to Dow this year.

So no, it its not unrealistic

We did trade this year's 3rd rounder out last year. Not all on McGovern.

At least we didn't trade 1 for 8 and McGovern.

Walsh will most likely have a better 1st year than what Dow did this year due to the examples i gave a few posts earlier.

We were never doing that anyway. My only concern is no pick is the late 20's to 35 range. Would have loved another one for a small forward like McHenry or another mid but it is what it is and hope for best McGovern shows it is worth not having picks in that range. Waiting to pick 69 for another pick is going to be a long wait.... arghhhh

And the Setterfield trade and the fact we traded our 2018 second, third and fourth round picks last year (we did get back 2 2018 second round picks and a 4th round)

Yes, it is just my personal concern of why the need to trade for McGovern. I was not for it as feel we got more need of mids and small forwards than talls. But, I am open to seeing what the reasons for the trade in the future. Hence I am keen to see him perform as won't be impressed if he adds nothing and we still short of needs for small forwards and mids. Would have liked some picks between 1 and 69. Lets hope McGovern performs to show why we have none after pick 1.

I hope you're fair about it, FF.

Measure him against output from an average mid second round pick.

2011 - Bootsma, Schade, McInnes, Hamling, Kersten
2012 - Towers, Paparone, White, Stewart, McBean
2013 - Gardner, McStay, Lobb
2014 - Goddard, Neilson, Maynard, Lamb
2015 - Collins, Redman, Adams, Cole
2016 - Ridley, Witherden, McLarty

Sure - second rounders look great pre-draft and everyone loves the idea of getting a bargain. The reality is, most don't make it very far. If Gov can be a 30+ goal forward and occasional defensive cover, that's an solid return for the investment.

Parish had to come in and perform straight away due to Essendon’s circumstances that year, and his stats are slightly inflated due to spending more TOG than a lot of mids in their first year.

It wouldn’t surprise me either to see Walsh average 20 off a wing, but we will see. Players that come in and perform to that standard are the exception and not the rule.

I actually think he is a very good kick, despite perhaps lacking the punch of other players.

He seems to have already adapted to his limitations, which is extremely rare at his age.

Walsh weighs his kicks very well and when he does miss a target, it is still to the advantage of his teammates

Not too dissimilar to Joel Selwood who is not an elite kick.
To be honest neither was Chris Judd.

Walsh's foot skills will not be a liability in my opinion, but he is not elite in that department.

I don't feel/see that in the most.
Again, we seem to be looking for more and more youth without honestly assessing the list we have.

Let me ask you this?
Which of the mids that will be around between 25 -50 will make us better?
Which of the talls that will be around that mark will be better than what we have?
Small goal-kickers maybe, but now we're narrowing the field and looking at something that may not even be there at those picks.

Sorry for the repeat, but I have to agains say: It's not more youth we need right now.
Analyse our list and you may find something similar.

I am happy with Setterfield deal as it made complete sense to me as it is a mid. The tall of McGovern does not for me, just yet. It may in time, I am hoping so.

McGovern is listed at 191cm, Setterfield at 190cm.

But the point was McGovern is just 1 part of why we have so few picks, not the main reason.

McGovern will have far more impact for us in the medium term than Setterfield.

A healthy McGovern is huge for us, both forward and back. Most importantly he will free up Charlie from double and triple teams.

Nah, he is the main reason. We would still have a pick in range of 25 to 30 for sure and possibly more, if we did not decide to get him instead.
In time it will prove a smart choice that I could not see the wisdom in or not. I hope it works out like our Menzel trade I never saw coming. I love those type of surprises.

A bigger stronger McKay and the addition of McGovern will make a massive difference to Charlie, should get a lot more 1 on 1's and now when he turns and goes quickly off the mark he should have good options to hit up.

Na I agree it shouldn't be expected but I think he would be capable if he gets enough midfield time. It would be great for us to find a player like Treloar, Stephenson, McGragh, Oliver, Heppell, Selwood ect who walk in and are legitimate AFL level players in their first season.
