What the senior coach said … with Peter German
"Even though we won, we could still play better. We had the ball inside 50 on 20 more occasions than Geelong, but in the end, we couldn't put the game out of Geelong's reach."
How German rated the Melbourne listed players …
Seniors
Rohan Bail – Rohan played mostly at half-back. We feel he's a genuine wing/midfielder, but part of his development is learning the defensive side of the game. He had a big impact when he went to the wing in the final term. It wasn't one of his better games, but he'll play wing in the future, where his run and ball-use going inside 50 will be utlised.
Kicks 5, Handballs 6, Marks 4, Tackles 1
Clint Bartram – Clint played the same role he does in the AFL. He ran with Kane Tenace and restricted him well while also having 21 disposals. Clint did the job we asked of him and we couldn't ask any more than that.
Kicks 12, Handballs 9, Marks 7, Tackles 4
Kyle Cheney – Kyle was good. He played across half-back and rebounded really well. He was composed in his defensive work and ball-use.
Kicks 19, Handballs 13, Marks 10, Tackles 3
Lynden Dunn – Lynden was good, playing onball most of the game. He won 28 possessions and had 10 clearances. He did a lot of the hard work. We're trying to get him to play with a bit more creativity and he did that very well, so he mixed up his game in the clinches and in general play.
Kicks 21, Handballs 7, Marks 6, Tackles 8, Goals 1
Daniel Hughes – He kicked three goals and was active again in the forward line. He took some strong marks, but he had other players to contend with in the air – Jurrah, Robertson and Newton, so we had a fairly tall forward line. 'Hughesy' pushed up the ground, which may have restricted his goalscoring ability. But he's starting to make some good inroads.
Kicks 7, Handballs 8, Marks 8, Tackles 4, Goals 3
Neville Jetta – Neville got some close attention playing up forward. But his forward pressure was very good – his tackling and chasing. If he's not winning the ball, at least he continues to put on defensive pressure, which is really important for his position.
Kicks 10, Handballs 4, Marks 2, Tackles 2
Liam Jurrah – Liam was very good. He was back in the senior side – he tackled and pressured really well – and finished it off with three goals. He moved up the ground as the game went on and played with a bit more freedom. He took a step forward and it was really pleasing.
Kicks 10, Handballs 7, Marks 5, Tackles 6, Goals 3
Jordie McKenzie – Jordie is a really important player for us, because he can come into the midfield and release a key player like Valenti or Dunn. The work he's been doing with Scott West in the clinches is starting to pay dividends.
Kicks 3, Handballs 10, Tackles 6
Tom McNamara – Tom had a light week on the track and he played accordingly. He wasn't as sharp as he has been over the past month – he's been a very good player for us – but we rested him up in the last quarter. Tom is still plugging on with his development. Although he was down a bit, he still made a good contribution.
Kicks 6, Handballs 5, Marks 5, Tackles 1
Michael Newton – He was very good and produced another consistent performance. Again, a couple of shots on goal when astray – that's a part of his game he's got to get right – but the way he is going about his footy at the moment and over the past five weeks has been outstanding. His defensive and offensive work has been very good.
Kicks 14, Handballs 5, Marks 9, Tackles 5, Goals 3
Ricky Petterd – Ricky pushed up into midfield, more than what he normally does in the AFL. He was very good, strong and won a fair bit of the ball. He also kicked two goals. It was a different role, but he seemed to really enjoy it.
Kicks 15, Handballs 12, Marks 7, Tackles 3, Goals 2
Russell Robertson – His whole game was good, but he could've been very good, because he kicked 3.5 and took 12 marks. He chased and tackled and did all of the things we asked him to do – he was very good at that. But he could've kicked seven or eight goals and that was the only area of his game that let him down.
Kicks 12, Marks 12, Goals 3
Jake Spencer – He only played the first seven minutes of the game, after coming off with a small hip injury. We didn't take any chances with him, so we decided to ice him.
Kicks 1, Handballs 2, Marks 2
Shane Valenti – Shane was excellent. He was very good in the clearances and in the clinches. He continues to maintain a good standard in that area. He kicked a good goal and set a few up as well.
Kicks 14, Handballs 14, Marks 1, Tackles 7, Goals 1
Jack Watts – Jack had 22 touches and was steady again. He used the ball well and he played mainly up the ground. He was No.1 with our inside 50 kicks for the game. It was a reasonable game and he's starting to show some good consistent form.
Kicks 13, Handballs 9, Marks 2, Tackles 4
Good signs in the Seniors for us, everybody seemed to be having very good games by those reports. Watts, Valenti, Hughes, Jurrah, Dunn, Bartram, Robertson, Cheney, Newton and Petterd all staking claims for selection this week.

Reserves
James Strauss – He's not far away from senior VFL selection, but we had 15 Melbourne-listed players play in the seniors on the weekend. He was solid again in the back-half. He provided good drive out of defence and is starting to get a good grasp of playing with bigger and stronger players.
Kicks 17, Handballs 15, Marks 9, Tackles 1, Goals 1
Paul Wheatley – Paul was very good, playing 80 per cent of the game. He played exactly the type of game you'd expect from a player of his experience and quality. Hopefully his body is right to play senior VFL footy next week.
Kicks 9, Handballs 10, Marks 5
Trent Zomer – Trent played at centre half-forward and worked hard. He kicked five goals and if he can continue to show that type of attack he'll be able to play in the VFL seniors.
Kicks 10, Handballs 3, Marks 5, Tackles 3, Goals 5
ZOMG kicking 5 and Strauss dominating with another 30+ possession game again this week would surely see them selected for the Casey seniors this week. I really cannot wait too see Strauss running around for the Melbourne team and hopefully he can keep the form up in the seniors so we can see him in a Melbourne jumper sometime soon this season.
