Match Report :

THIS is blossoming into a splendid season for the Casey Scorpions.
Going into 2008 there were no great predictions about their prospects, especially after the departure of coach Peter Banfield and a group of senior players.

But the Scorpions are thriving under new man Greg Hutchison, and the relationship between Casey and St Kilda is as good as it's been. It's a pity the alignment will cease at the end of the season.

On Sunday the Scorpions journeyed to Coburg and gave the 2007 grand finalist a 53-point caning to earn their eighth win. They are second on the ladder. They are going fantastically well.

That they lost two players with injury in the first half made the performance the more commendable.

Captain Kyle Matthews went off with a foot injury at the 20-minute mark of the first quarter (it was a burst blood vessel, not a break, as first feared) and little Beau Vernon was concussed early in the second term.
It tested legs, but Hutchison said his players were running as hard in the last quarter as they did in the first.

``I thought our guys were terrific,'' he said on Monday.
Experienced Saints Shane Birss (32 possessions, six inside 50s), Adam Fiora (28, eight inside 50s, five tackles) and the demoted Steve Milne (23, four goals, four tackles) set the example.

Milne clearly enjoyed himself and Hutchison said his goals were ``the cream on the cake''.

``I thought his work around the stoppages and through the midfield was really good,'' the coach said. ``His ability to run and spread and put pressure on and tackle was pleasing.''

Nick Dal Santo had a harder time of it. He had tenacious Tiger Nick Carnell as a hard tag (Carnell is no easier to shake than a leech) and had to be content with 19 disposals. But he laid five tackles, which would have pleased Saints coach Ross Lyon, who sat in the Casey coaching box.

``To our players' credit they worked pretty hard for him to get the footy and looked after him at the stoppages,'' Hutchison said.

``It was a tough day but Nick's played footy for a long time and he handled it pretty well. He still made a valuable contribution.''
Ruckman Michael Rix was again outstanding with 21 disposals and 14 marks. He drifted forward to filch three goals, but also worked hard defensively to cut off Coburg across half-back.

Half-forward lead-up merchant Chris Dunne was busy again, and Evan Panozza (23 possessions) gave rebound off his back flank. The left-footer is a player on the rise.

Alex Silvagni maintained his flawless form in the backline.
``He's just got some confidence about being able to play,'' Hutchison said when asked about Silvagni's improvement this season.

``We gave him the biggest opponent each week in terms of the name and he's standing up.He's got himself fit and he's playing with confidence. We don't complicate it too much for him and he goes about it in a really diligent manner.''
There was a senior VFL debut for Saints rookie Khan Haretuku, a tall lad who has kicked on since the start of the season. He nailed a goal with his first kick.
The Scorpions host Essendon-aligned Bendigo Bombers this Sunday.
Matthews will be on crutches for three days but may be available.

How about that ? Birss had 32 and Fiora 28 dispoals. Good on them, I would have guessed their totals were lower. I suppose that stats will not always tell the story as you see it yourself (and we are influenced in our judgement of a player when we see the stats on the big screen or on TV).

For me, Caseys best were Rix and Milne with Raph Clarke and Silvagni having good games, too. But what do I know ?! Coburgs best was certainly Schulz - I thought it was really interesting to see the big men, Rix and Schulz, dominate the game in wet and muddy conditions.

Squizzy, did you see Ross Lyon ? I didn't and I thought I read somewhere that he was actually at the MCG for the Carlton / Essendon game (last chance to watch the Blues live before we meet them in three weeks).

Dal was mauled by his opponent - only rarely seemed to get the benefit of the umpires decision. Birss was also copping a fair bit. Milney was busy.

I was impressed with Raph - looked quite creative at CHF

I also noticed how impressive Rix is at this level. What about the huge drop punt with a wet ball late in the game too.

Sorry if this has been discussed. Why are St Kilda and Casey ending there partnership? Are we going to be in partnership with Frankston?

St Kilda and Melbourne will basically swap their affiliates with St Kilda working with Sandringham (confirmed) and Melbourne taking over Casey (as good as confirmed).

Sandringham fits into the typical St Kilda supporter prey area. Melbourne ants to use Casey for training purposes and hence it does make sense for them to be partners. Frankston will (probably...) be St Kildas new training centre, but a partnership with the Dolphins was apparently never intended by either party.

The timing is a bit of a pity, with Ross Lyon showing much more interest and acknowledging Casey as a real partner, the co-operation is finally working well.

Agree - there are heaps of Saints fans nearby, and I used to be one of them (going to St. Kilda on Saturday and Sandy on Sunday).

I know alot of people are already excited about this, and I'd expect crowds at the games to increase (can't see too many Melbourne fans turning up at Sandy, can you?).

Hopefully we can keep Greg Hutchieson too (and Silvagni).

Nah, the wife and I snuck through a hole in the fence on the outer wing (good work locals!!!). I only saw McEvoy, Armitage and Eljay who wandered over (assume the players were getting hassled a bit by fans and the wailing Coburg fans on the grandstand side?).

Don't disagree. Not his greatest fan but it's not as if he can't do very good things. It's just that the bloopers (some of these were on show on Sunday) have tended to cost goals.

Alex Silvagni is a ready made AFL player lets hope we sign him and he goes under the radar of the AFL recruiters and Hutchieson is a great communicator.

Fair enough. We'll see how well Casey is supported by Melbourne supporters.

I've had two Carlton supporters make the switch and come to the footy with me to watch the Saints (albeit I married on of them so she has little choice!).

Our tragic history has it's allure for some!

That's starting to turn into a very good and watchable team.

Every one of the Casey players named in the starting 18 have played good football this year, and I wouldn't say any of the Saints guys are particularly out of form (more out of favour at the minute or coming back from injury).

Even more pleasing is our kids making the senior squad. Even before we raided the kids. Don't think any of our players are playing in the reserves side.:thumbsu:

For those that watch the scorpions and not just the saints listed players how does Kyle Matthews play? I know he must be good cause he is captain. He comes down and watches Ringwood play almost everyweek so get to speak to him a bit. He said having Milne in the team was awesome cause he is a freak and can just pull off magical stuff.

Unfortunately I think he's out for the year. Hurt his ankle or something leg related from memory. For a guy with such a small frame - he's a little goer. Awesome tackler & really does play like a captain even though he looks like a little leaguer!

Thanks for that, always hear that he goes hard. He is so small though, its amazing he can hold is own against the much bigger bodies. Apparently they have tried all sorts of diets and workout regimes but he just has one of those bodies which can't put on much weight.
