I posted this before, but I think it's worth another look.
It's basically a snapshot of the last 20 years of Hawthorn mastery over Geelong.
Of all the clubs in the AFL, I feel the sorriest for the Cat fans. Even during our ordinary last decade, we've still managed to cause them plenty of grief.Never mind Partridge and Lunchlady Doris.
- 1987 Round 22: Jason Dunstall knocks the Cats out of the finals race with 2 goals in time-on at Kardinia Park.
- 1988 Night Grand Final: Defender Chris Mew roosts the winning goal from 55m with seconds remaining.
- 1989 Round 6: Hawthorn turn around a first-half, 10 goal deficit to defeat the Cats, 26 goals to 25.
- 1989 Grand Final: Hawthorn defeat Geelong by 6pts in one of the greatest GFs ever, Dipper and Dermie both climb off the canvas.
- 1991 2nd Semi: Hawthorn def Geelong by 2pts, Jarman kicks a wonder goal from the Member's forward pocket to snatch the lead in time-on.
- 1995 Round 7: Hawthorn (8th) beat the Cats (4th) on Geelong's own dunghill
- 1996 Round 15: In spite of a rash of injuries, the 10th placed Hawks beat 5th placed Geelong by 2pts at Kardinia Park
- 1997 Round 12: 10th placed Hawthorn upset the 3rd placed Cats by 6pts at KP, Daniel Harford kicking the matchwinner from the boundary line
- 1999 Round 21: Hawthorn eliminate Geelong from finals contention in a 2pt thriller, Crawford seals his Brownlow with a BOG and a match-saving tackle in the dying seconds
- 2000 Elimination Final: Hawthorn (8th) defeat Geelong (5th) by 9pts
- 2002 Round 22: Geelong are bundled out of the top 8 when they lose to the Hawks by 18pts.
- 2006 Round 3: Hawthorn send the premiership favourite's season into a tailspin when they shock the Cats in Geelong by 52pts
- 2006 Round 22: Hawthorn give Johnny Barker a memorable send-off, thumping the Cats by 10 goals
- Since their last flag in '63, we've won 8 premierships.
Although your handbaggers may never win another flag, at least you know they'll always be competitive.
interesting stats but selective I must say. How do you like these stats:
from the period of 1897-2006 Geelong has played Hawthorn 138 times
Geelong have won 72 times, Hawks have won 65 and 1 draw. Geelong has won 52% of all H&A games against the Hawks.
Interestingly when you look at Finals appearances the stats are as follows:
Geelong: played 92 finals, won 37 finals, lost 54, 1 draw
Hawks played 60 finals, won 37 finals, lost 23. Hawks have a better winning %, because they have appeared in less final series than Geelong.
Pretty even up to this point but this is where the hawks win:
Geelong: 13 GF's played, won 6, lost 8 (1897 there was no GF but declared RU for being 2nd on the ladder)
Hawks:14 GF's played, won 9, Runer Up 5 times

Nice.
