He was addicted to alcohol if I remember rightly.
Quitting any habit is stressful, so he's probably very tense.

Tense people start fights.

Speaking from experience?

I quit biting my nails around the time i did the school certificate last year. I had several nervous breakdowns.

And my mother had tried to quit smoking. She couldn't do it because she ended up too stressed out.

Ask any ex-addict (*coughBenCousinscough*) about it. They'll tell you the same thing.

I think if SJ was gonna whack someone he'd have clobbered some nuff nuff in the VFL by now. :D

He was never addicted to alcohol and it's important to keep that in mind. He stuffed up by getting too pissed in the off-season, but when you're highly fit and you go out and drink, you feel like you're on top of the world and you keep going. You're right that tense people start fights, but Steve was not and is not addicted to alcohol - being an addict is a massive thing and he would not be ready to play and perform now if he had been.

If he got pissed on a fairly regular basis, that's the early symptoms of alcoholism.

But as I see it now. I stand corrected.

But I'm still iffy. If he's been in the VFL, and performing well, that means, if he's consistant, that it's going to be a sub-standard play in the AFL.

Translation please.

Idiotic. Give him a chance before declaring he's sub-standard. We all know he has the ability. He adds more to the side than Varcoe or Stokes anyway, as a true crumber rather than a converted midfielder.

Don't be too hasty to give credit where it may not be due.
And Stokes can be a solid player. He adds a bit of fresh play and a bit of speed to the team.

I've just basically said, I'm not sure if he's going to do well. I think he'd be better back in the VFL.

Terrible call. He has dominated the VFL for two months. He's clearly above that level.

But I've seen SJ play. If, as is suggested, he has mended his ways, he can finally start putting in four-quarter efforts and dominating games. Fact is, SJ has more ability than Stokes, we can now see if he's at last going to put it to good use.

Seeing isn't necessarily believing. I'm keeping my statement until Sunday after the match.

Too right. His efforts in the VFL have been deserving of a call up to the seniors. Whether he dominates this weekend is another matter, but if he shows something and works hard we'll be happy.

Disappointed to see Stokes and Prismall out, but with the bench they had, some tough decisions had to be made. Most of us would have preferred to see some of our underperforming midfield omitted instead, but I am sure Prissa will be back in the ones soon and Stokes really shouldn't be there at all.

You shouldn't defend him. Playing at a national level is a lot harder that a regional level.
And it's may be a case of big fish in a little pond. Is good in the small pond, but in a bigger pond, with better fish, it won't stand out, maybe even get eaten alive by the better fish.

You play well in the twos, you get promoted, pretty simply concept there.

Not only that but you act as though SJ has never played an AFL game in his life and will struggle. We all know what he is capable of - all we're asking from him now is a little more hardness and team oriented efforts. We know that skillwise he is more than up to the level.

Not sure where you're coming from here. He's no greenhorn fresh from playing in the country leagues.

I don't really care for his playing skills. I personally think if we weeded out the bad players (*coughEnrightcough*) we wouldn't be so glad to have him back. We could be sitting on top of the ladder right now if we tried, and without his help either.

Well, obviously if we weeded out the bad players, as you say, we'd need to replace them with someone. Chances are SJ would be in the side anyway.

If SJ does what he's supposed to do then there is no doubt he'd be in our best team, and as it stands we could certainly do with his help, so your rather optimistic hypothetical is moot.

We shall see after this weekend .
