I do agree, however, that calling for an upgrade at this stage is a pretty massive stretch. Particularly when I'm not sure we even could (does burton count as LTI, given that he's set to return mid season?). He's not even close to first 22 yet. I'm just impressed with what I've seen so far from a bloke who's pretty much come from nowhere.

Burton can be placed on the LTI list. Injured players are placed on the list for a minimum of 8 weeks. 8 weeks from now would only be about R2 or R3.

I thought that Armstrong did enough in the last game to be given another opportunity - he certainly did more than Sloane for example who is included again (at this stage with 3 to drop out).

Is Armstrong injured again or did last game count for nothing?

Pretty sure I recall someone mentioning that he had an arm injury or something and he wasn't exactly expected to play the IAS match until Walker pulled out.

Dandy_GO, when will you propose to Martin?

Why the heck would he do that? He's played about 5 SANFL league games the rest have been spent in the reserves. He's played one meaningless exhibition game and yet you're calling for Craig to get him off the rookie list? Staggering.

Even Moss has proved more. He's played more SANFL league footy and cracked an extremely strong Centrals side to win a premiership as a teeanger. And not to mention he's 12 months younger.

Really don't understand all the Martin hype. He's okay but has a long, long way to go to even get himself on the senior list.

totally agree

lets see more of Martin before we jump to promoting the lad, I too am a huge Moss fan, however lets not rush and promote any rookies until they have put a bit more form on the board

is petrenko playing??

anyone know the final squad ??

cheers my fellow legend supporters :)

well Martin is playing again this week, and we have a temporary spot due to LTI.

we could wait until they have all this form on the board, but then the lti window won't be open forever.

not sure all this caution isn't a bit overplayed.

Martin pushing for promotion

Wed, Feb 18, 09PACY rookie Brodie Martin has burst out of the blocks in the race to fill Brett Burton’s spot on Adelaide’s senior list for the start of season 2009.

Burton is running freely seven months into his recovery from a full-knee reconstruction, but is expected to be sidelined until the mid-season break.

Burton’s absence leaves the door open for Adelaide to put him on the long-term injury list and promote a rookie-listed player in his place.

Martin and fellow rookies James Moss and Chris Schmidt all made their Crows debut against the Indigenous All-Stars in Darwin, but only Martin has retained his place in the side for the NAB Cup opener against the Cats on Saturday night.

Coach Neil Craig said he had been impressed by the lightly built wingman’s performance throughout the pre-season.

“I like Brodie’s speed and evasion. He’s only small, but he’s been exceptional on the training track and I’m quite excited about what he can do,” Craig said on Friday.

“We’ve got a vacancy on our senior list with Brett Burton out with injury. That vacancy needs to be filled and if someone warrants it, we’ll certainly do that.”

Ironically, it was Martin’s smallish, 180cm, stature that lured him to football in the first place.

As a teenager, he juggled a promising basketball career while also playing junior footy for Meningie, but was eventually steered away from the round ball game.

“I played basketball as a kid, but everyone was telling me I was too short and that pushed me towards footy a bit,” Martin said.

“I still get (ribbed about) my size every now and then, but if you look around I’m a bit taller than Tyson Edwards and a bit taller than Andrew McLeod, so if that’s anything to go by I should be all right.”

At age 16, Martin experienced a growth spurt and was forced to fight out of his weight division when he was selected to play under Edwards’ brother - Dwayne- in the Meningie seniors.

“There were a few big bodies out there, but I still had my speed back then, which probably saved me a few times,” Martin said.

“I got knocked around a bit and I remember one particular game where I copped a few big hits, but I just got used to it.”

Martin was playing U17s in Meningie when a few wiser heads at the club encouraged him to try-out with SANFL club Sturt.

He played just one season of U19s for the Double Blues before catching the eye of Crows recruiting manager Matt Rendell.

“I never even thought about playing AFL until the second to last game of the year in U19s,” Martin said.

“We were playing against Glenelg in a final down at the Bay and the coach said before the game that there were 10 scouts out there watching just me… that put me on the back foot a bit.”

But he’s been on the offensive ever since arriving at West Lakes via pick No.52 in the 2008 NAB AFL Rookie Draft and believes he’s improved ‘two-fold’ on last year.

The Crows have named six debutants - Taylor Walker, Jared Petrenko, Rory Sloane, Myke Cook, Aaron Kite and Brodie Martin - in their 29-man squad, which will be trimmed to 26 on Friday afternoon.

Adelaide may also field another four players with less than 10 games experience.

Craig confirmed that Walker, Kite and Martin would all play against the Cats and encouraged supporters to get behind the rejuvenated squad.

Hey Crows

im abit shocked that some of you dont rate your chances tonight....
your team should be 4 weeks ahead of us in training....plus you had that game in Darwin to practice also..... and from what ive herd from our intraclub match... we looked sloppy...another plus for you guys is the game is at night... so the Telstra dome roof will most prob be shut :p .....we are running alot of new faces in both our sides by the look of things..... but i for one cant wait for tonight...

i still think the cats will win.... but im very much doubt it will be a blow out like our last game... :thumbsu:

Not wanting to stick up for CroCop, believe me, but maybe he has a point. All things being considered including Martin up until this stage, certainly implies a level of support - and interest - for the guy that doesn't exist on here.

Considering the players who have been left out, it IS very interesting.

I actually think he might have a future as someone to match up with the oppositions best small forward - he seems to have the right size, speed and discipline.

That being said, CroCop is still a goose. ;)

Hey,

Thanks for the words of encouragement :p I don't think it will be a blowout like our last game either, at least, it had better not be, that game was so painful to watch.

I thought we were in with a chance but losing Tippett, Rutten and Van Berlo put a dampener on my belief in our ability to win this match. For me this match represents a chance to expose our young players to a proper, very good AFL side, and also for fans like me to see them in action :)
