Kellie wasn't awful, but her voice doesn't lend her to a commentating position in my opinion. Pretty embarassing when she claimed a teammate had put Thompson under all sorts of pressure when it was a brilliant kick. The thing that drove it home for me was how much more I enjoyed the match when the commentary went off :p
Agreed

I thought Kellie Underwood was fine. She didn't talk too much crap, knew the players and called the play well. Didn't seem to have any particular bias in her calling and just outlined what was happening. I thought her comment about David Mackay was actually her asking Tim Lane whether he knew D-Macs nickname, rather than telling saying she had made the name up. She was up against it either way as most of us are not used to hearing a female footy commentator. If it has been a bloke making his debut I doubt any of us would have even noticed.

I agree... I thought she did a damned good job for a first game - far better than the likes of OX and Tim Watson who've been doing it for years!

Didn't really like Underwood that much TBH. Yeah, I know it's her first time etc etc but it's her voice... I don't really like it much as a footy commentator.

A few years ago she did a much better job on the radio (and was much better)with Rex Hunt and the 3AW crew. Last night she sounded to stiff and structured. Didn't like it but i don't have a problem with her being a woman but her actual commentry needs to improve.

She needs more time behind the mic, give her more time and she will improve.

Jimmy sellar actually look alright i was surprised, the other positive was hentschel i would play both of them for the whole regular season.

The negatives were
- the lack of a star young player showing what he can do
- the game plan, we were often outnumbered in our defence
- And the way we take the ball forward with big long kicks to packs

I was there and it was bleeding obvious what was happening - we would move all our defenders up but the downside was we were caught out if we turned it over and exposed what was left of our defenders.

Here are a few takeouts game last nights game (as advised by the 3AW commentators):-

1. Geelong scored 13 of their 18 goals directly from our turnovers whilst Adelaide only scored 4 of their 11 goals from their turnovers - both considered to be records

2. Geelong scored 18 goals from 36 forward entries (a 50% strike rate and unheard of) against Adelaide scoring 11 goals from 46 forward entries

3. Jared Petrenko got the :thumbsu:

The Geelong ball movement was precise whilst we struggled.

I thought a 5-6 goal loss was on the cards and for the majority of the game we were playing our kids.

PS : Gary Ablett is a champion.

I don't care what anyone says, there should be no more female commentators. Good on Kelli for giving it a go, she would have been shitting herself, but it was terrible. Females just don't have that big booming voice. Imagine her if the dying seconds of a tight game .. that would be cringeworthy.

I don't think we did too badly last night. We got beaten and Cats deserved to win but lets not forget we were without our best defender and best forward. Not to mention we still have vB & Symes out.

Still plenty to work on but I like the looks of Walker & Otten. Cook & Kite looked compltely out of their depth.

Oh and how brilliant are our 2 most underrated players in Stevens & Edwards :thumbsu::thumbsu:

Had a laugh to myself reading some of the comments through here. Some gems:

"This is disgraceful"
"This is pathetic"
"I've turned the TV off"

Some people I tell ya ..

I know lol. Imagine if the game was actually worth something. They may as well not bother tuning in.

I think their ought to be more female commentators - if they have what it takes. Kelli was 1000 times better than half the "expert" male commentators channels 7/10 operate with now. It was her first gig... give her a bloody chance. Typical males.

I admire Kelli for having a go, but jenny, it was shit.

It was her first gig but no she shouldn't get another chance. She will though, but it wont last long, and rightly so.

A lot of that is just the point. This was the 4th game of australian rules she has commentated...ever. Surely you need to learn the craft at lower levels before you jump into a national telecast of the highest level of the sport.

get off your soap box, why ought there be more female commentators?
as a question of entitlement over merit, how do you figure this?

if they're good enough, yeah fine.

Well said Crow-mo. Everyone on their merit :thumbsu:

Kelli was good in a lot of ways - didn't confuse Vince with Mackay etc not once! Kudos for that, and also she had tidbits of info about the players throughout the match, which were all correct that I remember. These two points alone put her a step above a lot of commentators.

But as people are saying, her actual call was a bit monotonous and used all the generic expressions. Those two problems sound like a confidence thing, so if she calls more games she'll get better and better, and if she keeps doing her homework like above, she may end up better than a lot of the boys.

However, please don't let her practice on national TV until she's better :thumbsu:

I think she improved through out the game, started out commentating like she was on the radio, but got better as the night continued

I reckon once she is relaxed she will be fine, especially if she continues to avoid crappy cliches or little insights that no one cares about.

jenny, you're being loyally sexist.

She didn't do a bad job, but she didn't do a good job.

Far better than the OX and Tim Watson?? lol They're the 2 worst in the game and at least they can offer first hand football comments from experience.

As for Kelli being 1000 times better than half the "expert" male commentators channels 7/10 operate with now - WTF??? A monotone nasal female voice only using standard cliches?? Yeah, right!!

I'll give her credit for having the guts to have a crack at it even knowing that she was in the gun before she started.

Having said that she did nothing to make me say I want to hear her again.

I thought her research was meticilous.

If half the male commentators did that kind of research into the Crows we'd all be stoked with their insight.

Apart from that it was fingernails on blackboard stuff.

Got to agree with all of that, our turnovers hurt us but there was definitely a bit of a fundamental flaw in the game plan as those figures seem to support, we moved all our guys up a bit like the hawks did last year but we bunched them up too much leaving the whole backside open when they got possession.

I think geelong were flooding one side of the ground to combat it as well, it was a bit hard to tell from the telly.

PS: As good a player as Ablett is, Johncock got a bit of raw deal from the umps against him when 1 on 1.

Because there are MANY avid and knowledgeable female fans out there. As others have stated - she did her homework, she knew our players (a bloody first!) and she didn't fluff and carry on. I did also state that IF they were good enough they should get a go. She wasn't the best, but she sure as hell wasn't the worst.
