2 games back from ACL and this guy has so much negativity. 3rd highest possessions tonight, clunks contested marks (our midfielders apart from Sloane can be poor), has great hands in traffic and is fantastic at drawing a player and getting free to release a handball to another free player.

Great game against tigers, comeback is coming together well
CEY has a lot of great tools but clean hands is definitely not one of them. Fumbles a lot and decision making is suspect but overall he still had a pretty good game and it a very good depth midfielder to have.

As much as I would love to see CEY succeed, and hope he does, am I the only one wondering why the **** we gave away Jarryd ******* Lyons for a half eaten sandwich????
No.

My guess is we had no intention of using him as any more then depth and he wanted money that was not reflective of that.

I can't remember who the poster here was but they had an obsession with mids who could take overhead semi contested marks.

With CEY, Greenwood and Gibbs that aspect was a massive improvement. In that sense actually better than having two crouch brothers out there

Somewhat disagree. Super strong in the guts of it. Gets hands out and doesn't really miss kicks. Need him working through the mid/fwd line. I'd dump Lynch, as long as JJ plays as a genuine KPD. RUNNING POWER IS THE KEY. I just hope that our ciaches realise that.

What? Lynch is one of our most important players. No way does CEY stay in for him. And I've wanted CEY to get a decent go for years.

This was the part of Cam's game that was impressive for mine. His capacity to be clean with his overhead marking. He took 8 for the night.

We haven't had an overhead marking mid since Danger, and whilst I'm not the person who banged on about it, I agree that it's very useful to have a big mid who can take marks around the ground

He played 21 games in his last year, finished 12 in the b&f for ave votes, ahead of a 62 goal forward/ruck

He wasn’t a backup

The fact we didn't see any worth in keeping him (and it would have been likely that a below average AFL wage contract would have sufficed) would indicate that we had no interest in having Lyon in our best 22 come 2017.

I think it was Wayne’s World?

(Apologies Wayne if I’m wrong!)

I have a hunch he wasnt popular enough with a selection panel heavy hitter.

That still doesnt explain the trade

From what I have heard, we didn’t want to be one paced midfield of similar players. We liked JL but a number of factors came into our decision:

- We were after Gibbs and needed to clear cap room to bring him in. To do that we needed to let JL go, ensure that Henderson’s trigger didn’t activate an extra year of his contract, hence why was he dropped for the final despite being in our top 5 players against West Coast in rd 23.
- Club felt that Matt Crouch and JL were both inside midfielders with similar pace and of similar size and they went with Crouch for obvious reasons.
- There was also Thommo who was getting a game back then but for the long term planning I don’t hink that impacted much.

We didn’t get the Gibbs trade done as Carlton rejected our offer on the final day so we basically lost JL and Henderson for sweet **** all that year.

That doesn’t explain why we gave away JL for **** all, when it was clear Carlton were anchoring on Gibbs

JL was really good for us, but he’s gone to another level for GC.

Because we foolishly thought that Carlton would give in and do the deal in the final minutes of the trade deadline and we needed to make sure we had enough cap room to get Gibbs.

Miscalculated greatly.

I think CEY played a really solid game considering it was only his second game back(?), how little AFL level football he has played in 18 months to 2 years and he deserves a good go considering how well he played in the SANFL last year. This is make or break year for the youngster and given the way he played on Thursday night he knows it - hope he makes the best of it as he's worked really hard to come back after his knee injury. I was really pleased with his performance on Thursday night.

Lyons hasn’t gone to another level. He was very under-rated when he played for us. But he is no A grader. I doubt anyone would argue that we would have preferred to keep him over a number of players including CEY. But IIRC he was asking for a big pay bump. IIRC even his agent had mentioned something in the media during the contract negotiations. I think it was a matter of wage structure. He isn’t A grade and We already had a large number of players on that mid tier on reportedly hefty pay packets. Menzel, Seedsman and Hampton all brought in and Mackay are the obvious ones. We also had a similar role player in Douglas. I think they were pretty even in terms of their contribution at the time of that trade. Not many would agree with me.

I think JL just didn’t fit into our wage structure. The tipping point probably came when Gibbs announced he wanted to come to us. 99 times out of 100 that deal gets done, and if so, Lyons was a pretty fair make weight given he was out of contract, unlike the others on decent coin that we may have preferred to release.

You don’t recall correctly or at all

Best game I have seen from the C-E-Yo for us. My position has been that he has only a limited ceiling, but he has bulked up and got very fit. I liked how when he got caught on a few occasions he could use his extra strength and build to still get a handball free. He needs to back up that effort but it is looking like he may push right up to his ceiling and get the best out of himself. Good on him and also the club for persevering. With injuries to our mids he is a real bonus!

I had no issues with moving him on; I though what we got was way too low though.

I recall debating this with posters last year who claimed going for Gibbs had nothing to with Lyons going.

Of course it did, we pushed Lyons out trying to get Gibbs. But when that failed the damage was already done, GC knew they had us cornered and we got **** all.

Travesty what we did to a loyal player in Lyons. Very pleased for him that he’s doing so well.
