Eddy came into the side because Impey and Krakouer weren't available. It worked because the SCG is a small ground and low fitness levels aren't exposed.

Then Impey replaced Eddy - and then Eddy came back in when Hartlett wasn't available. It worked because the ball ended up in our forward line more often than not.

We played the 'traditional' way by choice in the Showdown and not only did we score less against a side that is normally crap defensively, we conceded 100 points.

Eddy isn't playing not because Ken doesn't want him to play, but because he costs us a rotation on the bench. 51% TOG. His inclusion means our midfield is doing twice the amount of work. So unless he's actively hitting the scoreboard every week, he becomes a liability to the entire side.

So Eddy becomes the scapegoat for Ken's tactical naïveté of not matching Adelaide's overload at stoppages?

Why did we draft a 27yo who can't play more than half a game, presumably?

Why are we reverting back to a small-heavy system that just doesn't work?

Okay, but this didn't happen in a vacuum.

We also lost Hombsch and Ryder from that side. We also have other talls on the list who could have come into the side.

When Eddy was out against Freo I was miffed because I wanted to see him play against a side we should beat at home in good conditions, but people reasonably argued that we were still a lot taller than last year.

Now we're shorter than last year and now we've completely abandoned the structure we started the season with. We'll keep our "shape" but we'll have to deal with contest after contest all day where we're comfortably outsized. While dealing with a losing ruck. While dealing with GWS's running power.

No but it will work.

We're the first sporting club in history to implement a zone defence and height won't matter or something

Was one of the criticism of GWS in their loss against Adelaide the fact they didn't run both ways hard enough? I guess we are trying to beat on the rebound/out work them. Our short backman really bites us when Trengove has to play ruck. I take it Westhoff will be rucking some on Saturday.

I would have just maybe, you know, tried something different, like worming to his strength and saying, hey you. No more than 50 metres from goal. Lead, mark, kick, don't do the run off rotation thing that no one knows why they do it has zero tactical advantage and just kills momentum

But that's not Ken's mojo.

Last 2 seasons he did this

At least John butcher is sitting at home tonight and knows it wasn't him and even if he was on the list he wouldn't get a game still

Eddy becomes scapegoat Ken's tactical naïveté of not matching Adelaide's overload at stoppages??

This. This. This. Over and over

Or do people think it was just bad luck that_every_ loose ball, _every_dropping kick, and every 50/50 saw it land in a crow players lap

Where are you going to take the extra player from? It's either a key forward or a key back - and we're already down to Jonas and Clurey as our key backs.

You could take off a high back or high forward but then you're losing the ability of defensive pressure to lock the ball into key areas.

So Eddy comes out and White goes in to add more defensive pressure - that's where your overload comes from - from your small forwards/small backs.

The difference is that this year we have the contested midfield necessary to make it work. It's not based on just trying to get around the contest - we can also go through it. Every other side said that the way to stop us was to create stoppages and win the contest. Adelaide did the same thing on Saturday and won because we didn't have the outside players available through the midfield because Trengove and Eddy were in playing in their positions.

If these selections come off, Ken will be the genius and it wouldn't surprise me if we do well but if it's a massive fail, i will turn my focus to 2018 and what coaches will be available, if i were KT i would be bashing on Clarko's door and don't take no for an answer.
You're really on to something here. Hinkley has small man syndrome & will crush & destroy a career of anyone over 178cm's. If Hinkley has his way Jake Neade will play 400 plus games for Ports & see him retire when he's in his 50's.

I'm sick of hearing how the opposition has worked out on how to stop us. Na **** that I wanna hear how we're going to stop them !!

Agree with what others are saying here about the perceived lack of height in our forward line.

It has all the repeat offerings of our game against Geelong in 2015. We had +2 inside 50s against Geelong that night, for a return of 14 scoring shots (11.3), compared to Geelong's 22 scoring shots (14.8). Besides Wingard's slips catch on the boundary and checkside goal that night, we kept bombing it on Schulz' or Gray's heading thinking that 5th time the charm and they might mark it.

We bring Pittard in against GWS why? That sweeping medium sized HB flanker type already worked perfectly with DBJ, Broadbent and Hammer last week. We're adding in another player of that same calibre and expecting it'll negate Patton, Cameron and Lobb how? Greene we've got covered, not the others by a long way.

Also why was Eddy dropped? What criteria is he being marked against? Was he expected to win the Showdown medal in his second AFL game?

Just another unexplained, unanswerable question.

Pittard is a quality player and Eddy has not done a thing this year for him to hold down his spot. He was always going to be a break glass in case of an emergency type player. Guy is a 27 yr old rookie and very overrated on this board

Eddy is in the Butcher twilight zone of Hinkley's mentality.

This is a dumb assumption and you keep talking like we had no choice. 3 weeks ago we beat Sydney in Sydney with 3 more KPPs than we have this weekend. 2 weeks ago we wiped Freo off the park with 3 more KPPs than we'll play this weekend.

Already down Hombsch and Ryder, the last thing we should have been doing is going another tall down. If you're dropping Eddy, pick Austin or someone else who can fill that role.

If we needed to bring in White, Sam Gray is an obvious out. Amon is an acceptable out.

Just like against Essendon in 2014 when we went in this short, we might get to a lot of contests but we're going in undersized to just about every one.

You're now relying on midfield dominance in a game where we don't have a recognised ruckman and are playing an elite midfield with a good ruckman.

We have zero flexibility. We'll be robbing Peter to pay Paul all day.
