Changes for Perth

I was watching Fox Sports news and not really listening and noticed on their coverage of the back pages for tomorrows papers they all had a story on Harris being injured again, anyone know what thats about?

Sore shoulder from carrying the rest of the attack in Adelaide I believe...

I'm sure I saw the physio massaging Harris's shoulder during the last test. I guess there is an issue then.

Massive lulz at Kim Hughes' comment on Johnson - "The bloke couldn't bowl a hoop down a hill" :p

It was coming with Harris, he was never going to make the series through. It's a shame but he is like Shaun Marsh, more out of cricket than in.

I can't believe they are resting Mitchell Johnson. He has said himself that he needs to bowl a lot and Tim Nielsen in the past has said the same thing so that goes against all good sense.

What am I saying?

In that case, it is highly believable.

1. Shane WATSON
2. Shaun MARSH
3. Ricky PONTING
4. Dave HUSSEY
5. Mike HUSSEY
6. Michael CLARKE
7. Brad HADDIN
8. Steve O'KEEFE
9. Ryan HARRIS
10. Mark CAMERON
11. Trent COPELAND

so reading these articles it seems like we are going with the same old pace attack as the one in Brisbane.... Hilf, Johnson and siddle..... the same one that was smashed for 1/517. what would i do? i'll have copeland in for sure instead of siddle.... wouldve kept harris to bowl into the wind but hes injured. so the best option into the wind.

Yep, what an absolute disgrace, i can't believe they will turn to Johnson after missing one match, doesn't he have to prove something in shield cricket first? I just don't understand the mindset of these selectors, it's stunning

Copeland has been bowling superbly in Shield cricket yet his name hasn't been mentioned

Siddle tries hard, but he just is too predictable

I can't wait to see this selection panel get the sack after this series, you can't continue with the same selectors that have lost you the last two ashes series

I'm sure they will use the excuse we are in a transition phase or rebuilding, but the fact is our youngest player in the first two tests is 28, and the rest are mid 30s

There is only one thing worse than picking a batsmen out of form and that is picking a bowler out of form and the Australian selectors seem to specialise in that. In reality, the Australian selectors only have themselves to blame for this ridiculous situation.

They should never have recalled North for the series against New Zealand after he had been originally dropped and gone back to play for WA and averaged around 20. Clueless.

While, Siddle had one good bowling innings on the first day at the Gabba, he is a poor man's Merv Hughes. I believe the Australian side should line-up like this.

Hughes
Marsh
Watson
Clarke
Hussey
Ponting
Haddin
Hauritz
Harris (if fit)
Copeland (you can't argue with 57 wickets in nine Shield matches)
Hilfenhaus

What I think the Australian selectors will do is this:
Watson
Hughes
Ponting
Clarke
Hussey
Ferguson
Haddin
Smith
Johnson
Harris (if fit, if not Siddle)
Hilfenhaus

We should have started blooding young players years ago and not drop them, like we did with Hughes, at the first sign of any inconsistency.

The thing that is becoming so very clear about Mr. Ponting is he sees this only about himself. He is not the batsman he once was.

Like Clarke, he's a flash in the pan man. He could well have returned to batting form & extended his career, if he'd been man enough to do what Tendulkar did, by resigning the captaincy & concentrating on his cricket & batting. He hasn't & he is now the biggest obstacle to Australia rebuilding the team. He should have resigned the captaincy after he lost the last Ashes. When he didn't he selectors should have made the decision for him, just as they did with Taylor & Waugh before him. Ponting stated after the last loss that England "out-batted us, out-bowled us & out-fielded us."

He should have added they out-captained us too. In this game, the batsmen failed. As a consequency, Ponting resorted to the most ridiculous field settings ever seen on a Test cricket field. Fields it was impossible for bowlers to bowl attacking lines to. As Kerry O'Keefe so astutely put during his commentary, "Ricky's only possibility with these fields is for the batsmen to commit suicide with a runout." Given they were hitting fours, it was a remote possibility.

Well what a disappointment that it seems Harris isn't going to be there in Perth... would have loved to see him on the WACA...

What i think the selectors will do...

1) Hughes
2) Watson
3) Ponting
4) Clarke
5) Hussey
6) Smith
7) Haddin
8) Hauritz
9) Johnson
10) Siddle
11) Hilfenhaus

What i'd prefer (assuming Harris is not fit)

1) Hughes
2) Watson
3) Khawaja
4) Ponting
5) Clarke
6) Hussey
7) Haddin
8) O'Keefe
9) Johnson
10) Hilfenhaus
11) Bollinger

Get some young guys in there who can build a nuleus of a team... Hughes, Khawaja batting at the top, Smith will be in that team once Hussey retires...

Give O'Keefe a chance as although i wouldn't be distraught with Hauritz i think we've already been down that path and weren't too happy..

Get Ponting and Clarke down a spot each... Clarke is a no.5 and bats his best when there. Ponting will benefit a bit with a little less pressure.

Yes, Khawaja isn't in excellent form, but he's the future. Form can change pretty quickly and i think we just need to back him in...

It doesn't matter which team we pick in Perth..

we will lose!

i dont think people mind the team losing.

its more putting up a better performance and trying something.

same team 100% chance losing.

different personnel might mean we still lose, but we might uncover personnel that can actually compete at the top level

the cupboard is bare.

changes should have been made 2 years ago...not now...on the run

......with some bandaids applied.

well i think most believe changes shouldve been made along time ago. thats why selectors are getting alot of heat atm.

i guess better late than never as the saying goes.

To "fight on" ? That's the problem, they don't fight! Ponting throws away his wicket with nothing shots and sets ridiculous fields the bowlers have no chance of taking wickets with. He has never been a fighter, when under pressure to stop a collapse he is first to go for very little runs. He's got as much fight in him as a barbie doll.

This is the problem with Australian Cricket...firstly...the wages we pay them and the length of the contracts, even if a player is out of form (which Ponting is), the selectors hands are tied, they have to pick them. The are not going to pay a player for playing state cricket.

Secondly, Ponting is deciding when he wants to quit...its time Ricky, you are way past your best...even he must realise this.

Typical Ponting. He has acted like a petulant child the whole time he has been captain. He is the most embarressing captain Australia has had in any sport. It doesnt surprise me that he yet again shows no maturity and realise that his time is up. Get it into your head Ricky - NO ONE WANTS YOU!!!

The system has to be fixed and allow players in form to play. You only have to look at the television commercials to see who will be selected.

Sponsors are NOT going to pay players who are not in the squads. So far I have not seen a Vodafone ad with Hodge, Smith, Starc, Paine etc etc...guess who is not playing????

Just read 2 Marths D posts in 2 different threads.

1 post said that Hussey's shot was the worst shot in 140 years of test cricket.

The other just said nobody wants Ponting around and he is not a fighter !!!

Troll maybe????

i do.

he's the best man for the job right now, particularly considering the VC is out of form and struggling with injury.

Can not believe they aren't going to bowl Johnson in the upcoming Shield match

The bloke needs overs in the middle.

We should be doing what we did with Doug - bowl him in the 1st innings and then sub someone else in.

The changes will be

Out Katich, North, Doherty

In Hughes, Smith, Johnson

Can someone please explain why there are so many calls for Johnson to return for the 3rd test?

He was dropped due to bowling very poorly in the first test, having struggled since batsmen around the world realised that there was no law obliging them to edge the ball going across their body. By opting to leave the ball they eliminated his one and only wicket taking delivery. Now he's nothing but a toothless tiger.

I've read comments along the lines of "we won't win the Ashes without him". I put it to you that we won't win The Ashes whether he's in the team or not - and that our (already slim) chances of winning are dramatically reduced by his inclusion in the team.

I'm also struggling with all the calls for Phil Hughes' selection. Yes, he was hard done by when he was dropped in England. However, his form this year has been nothing short of diabolical. We need to select players who are at least in some sort of form, not basing selection on guilt over mistakes made 2 years ago. The fact is that the poms have him worked out and the Saffies are kicking themselves for not having done so before he ripped their attack to shreds. Unless and until he overcomes his technical flaws against short pitched bowling (and they do exist) - and regains confidence in his own abilities in doing so - then he will be lucky to play for NSW, let alone Australia.

Right now we have 4 players who desperately need to be replaced - Katich (injured), North (incompetent), Doherty (not much better) and Bollinger (unfit). Siddle is borderline, saved by his 1st test/1st innings heroics. In an ideal world I'd like to see Ponting & Clarke dropped as well, but we can't make 7 changes to the team in one hit (and I'm struggling to find 2 batsmen to replace North & Katich, finding 4 would be mission impossible).

Smith seems the obvious replacement for Doherty. Warne's been retired for 4 years and he's still Australia's best spin bowler by a country mile. He's not going to come out of retirement, so we make the best of a (very) bad bunch. Smith can't bowl, but neither can any of our other spinners. At least he can bat, which puts him ahead of the rest of the field.

Copeland and/or Cameron could/should replace Bollinger - and possibly Siddle as well. They have form in the Sheffield Shield, so why not reward them?

That leaves the batting options. Sadly, the cupboard is looking very bare indeed...

Khawaja is the most obvious selection. His form isn't outstanding, but it's a damn sight better than Hughes'. He's young and he's the future of Australian cricket. Now is as good a time as any to introduce him to test cricket.

That leaves the opening slot. None of the state openers are sticking their hand up, so we might have to rearrange the deck chairs amongst the incumbents (I'd suggest promoting Hussey), bringing in another middle order player. Marsh's first class record suggests that he's not going to have a long term test future, but right now he's probably the best option we have. Is there anyone (other than Khawaja) under the age of 25 who has made runs this year?

So.. my team:
1. Watson
2. Hussey
3. Khawaja
4. Ponting
5. Clarke
6. Marsh
7. Haddin
8. Smith
9. Copeland
10. Cameron
11. Harris

12. Siddle

I wasn't necessarily referring to your posts. I had posts like this in mind:
OUTS:

Peter Siddle (Omitted)

INS:

Mitch Johnson

Mitch Johnson - We ain't winning the ashes without him, simple as that!!
*** Note that I've edited the quote, leaving just the parts relevant to MJ.
