Prediction Changes for Rd 3 vs Brisbane

I think we need to give Brander a bit more of a go before writing him off. Kid has barely played, gotta give him a chance if we believe the talent is there. Patience.

Hard to know who is knocking on the door to come in. One would assume Williams as he was close earlier, but do we really want another tall for a night game on the GC?

Surprised with how many changes have the side becoming taller, not shorter.

I’m not sold that squad balance is quite on point. We don’t currently have the draft picks to rectify this as well.

Also agree with an above poster on the lack of variability/pinch hitters in the middle, especially with no Venables nor Willie. Redden isn’t the type you throw in there for something different, either. Nor Hutchings when he’s back.

JK will become the elephant in the room quite quickly given his recent form.

I like the idea of Williams doing the ruck work, but where does that leave Oscar?

I think one of the hardest things to get our head around, and the issue that is causing headaches for supporters (and match committee) is we just can't have Allen and Williams in the same team playing in the same forward line with both JK and JD. To some, that conundrum throws JK's position up for grabs, given his recent output, however it is unlikely the match committee (and majority of supporters) feel that way.

Our midfield depth is insanely slim and our defensive depth is insanely deep. Its time for some guys to put some big boy pants on and move back into the midfield. Primarily Duggan. I think we need Schofield in the best 22 also to free up Sheppard to run off more. Do not like him as a lockdown defender one bit. Its a waste of his ability. Need to stick with the Sheed/Kelly HFF role a bit longer I feel also. We need to tag Daniel Rich also with Hutchings. He kills us every single time. For next week id like to see

IN: Williams. Schofield, Cole, Hutchings
OUT: McGovern, Brander, Nelson, Ah Chee

Gov out for Schofield.

Schoey won't try mark a ball when it is slippery, he will thump it out of there.

Petrol to keep his spot, give him a few games to get going. He did generate some shots as did Ryan, just poor finishing. They both need to do more defensively though.

I really like Brander.

He did two great things, one was that mark in the middle going down the corridor and a perfectly weighted kick to Ryan, and the other was a perfect field kick switch from half back to Ryan (who then dropped the easiest mark). Both occasions Brander was key in setting up to launch a scoring opportunity from our defensive half, both times it came unstuck from another player not finishing off their work.

His problem has been being a bit timid, and a lack of accumulation. One of those things he can fix, and the other is down to the thankless role we have given him.

Remember when Shep looked trash in his first 20 games. A young Darren Glass also looked way out of his depth.
Glass will never make it - was I right or not? Man he was terrible.
The entire team only ran one way (and slowly) so its hard to single out a few kids for the chop. Brander was rubbish - except for a couple of absolute class disposals with brilliant vision - and one set up a goal. Let him develop for example.

Would be great to have Cameron fit to come in for AhChee also, but doubt he’s fit enough atm

Remember when we went on our 10 game win streak in ‘18? Hurn was asked what the secret was and he simply said ‘kick it to a bloke who’s free’ Our guys don’t look like they’re working hard enough to get themselves, or one of their mates in space, instead just bombing it down the line all day. It’s frustrating as hell. Players aren’t willing to use aggressive kicks into the corridor. Sheed hit one the other night and the field opened up for a goal. Guys have to back themselves, lift their work rate and stop being so safe all the time. Get the ball in Jettas hands like we use to. Id like to see Kelly rotated forward too if he cops a hard tag, just try something when things aren’t going your way. AhChee, Nelson and Cripps can all run through the middle
If it wasn’t a night game I’d play Waterman for AhChee, he’s just a smarter forward and would be b22 for nearly every other team out there

Waterman has a great tank as well and he can run up and down the ground to get the ball and be a link man.

When you lose to a team on an 19 game losing streak, it doesn't matter, we will all find something and someone to pick on. I include myself in that.

People on here burning Jetta for doing exactly what you said he should. The reason he was singled out as one of our worst is because he took risks, they didn't come off, and we were punished for it a couple of times.

From what I saw in the intraclub + the first two rounds was trying to be riskier, and run through the corridor more often. In round 1 we had 10 bounces I think which was a huge departure from 2019. Against the suns there was some play down the middle early on. If your skills aren't there you are going to get burnt on turnover.

Game style is irrelevant if you don't have clean hands, drop easy marks, and kicking efficiency is poor.

Saturday reminded me a lot of the marsh series against Essendon. We will need to improve that area of the game very significantly in the time between now and Saturday against the Lions.

I only remember Jetta fluffing one kick the other night, although I was about 6 beers deep when the game started. He’s still our best attacking weapon and guys just need to find ways to create space for each other. Hurn just wants to chip it around these days and Gaff looked like he just wanted to bomb it blindly all night. We were in the game early on when we took some risks, as soon as we went into our shell we got spanked.

Out - Brander, Gov
In - Waterman, Schofield/Rotham

Not sold on Oscar as a second ruck, and I want Williams to have a go but Oscar needs to be in the team and including Williams will throw the team further out of balance. Brander doesn't have AFL level intensity and throws the team out of balance. Ah Chee and Petruccelle were poor but there aren't any obvious replacements, and I would like Ah Chee to have an extended run just to get a definitive answer on him so we can stick or move on.

Nelson I am a fan of mainly because he adds a bit of grunt to the backline and isn't the player you want racking up stats.

Can I ask a question- Why does Oscar NEED to be in the team?

Would prefer to replace Nelson with Cole or Franky than adding another tall if Nelson loses his spot.

Because he offers something in nearly every match he plays. The only issue regarding Oscar is team balance which concerns me.

Totally agree with your point of view, by the way.

Match committee has its hands full with understanding how we find that balance. Personally I'd like to see us with two tall up forward, JD and Oscar and have Williams as 2nd ruck.

If we stick with JD/JK and Oscar as second ruck/forward, perhaps the solution can be found via rotations.

We are currently under utilising rotations by about 12 based on round 1 and round 2.

Surely we can use those extra rotations through the forward line to ensure we aren't too tall at any time during a game.

Re: Brander - would argue its bloody hard to fix timidity. Don't think there is an easy fix for a trait like that. He needs to focus on his aggression (and the coaches should be guiding that) or he will be quickly heading to Bustville. Lack of confidence and playing a foreign role is probably making that particular issue worse at the moment.
