stats!!!we go with simmo's sixth sense
Not just stats - I went to a game and sat next to one of the Carlton talent scouts and we discussed him and his prospects. I did not expect him to be picked by us as he is outside our normal type. The Carlton scout said that he is exciting but coming from a fair way back.

Simmo has said that he has given Masto a simple and well defined role. Narrowing the scope for some players, focusing on their strengths and minimising their limitations means we are get getting the best we can out of him. Hope it continues.

What we have had so far is the same old same old really hope it gets better

Yes.
Its interesting to note that a lot of the criticism that is being leveled at Masten is very similar to that leveled at Gaff over the years.
Both players are role players and vital to the game plan and how we structure up.
Strange that some have to find fault before there is fault and cant be happy that we are exceeding expectations.

keep telling yourself that no comparison

Are you watching 2017 replays?

not at all this is the same crap he has served up his entire career how people try and defend the mediocre I'll never know. Lets see what happens to Masten in a tough game and find out for sure if his MO has changed this year like simmo said its hard to rate where we are at this year don't get too hyped people.

Your mind is made up, I get that.

What I don’t get is why you can’t get behind the player on the team you support and give him credit for his obvious improvement in 2018.

To say he is the same is pigheaded & foolish.

To say he has changed is pigheaded and foolish. Lets keep our side in the mediocre and never challenge for a flag ever again. It's a brutal game with brutal decisions needing to be made to achieve success blind faith in a player gets us nowhere.

Our unexpected success is due to a variety of reasons I believe.

1) Good transition from half back through Hurn and Jetta.
2) Nic Nat back in the ruck papering over our weak midfield.
2) A live wire forward line that had new ingredients added to it namely of the Ryan, Venebales and Waterman variety.

Now without Ryan which was the most dynamic change in our forward line as he had a combination of leap, speed and goal sense and now take out Venebales who has genuine pace I hope Lecras and Cripps can continue their good form to replace the out put that these 2 guns were giving us.
As far as Masto is concerned. He was serviceable.

Agree with all but one point Masten is just serving up the same old crap he has been doing his entire career. Oh and by the way my whipping boy is Redden not Masten he was injured last week so not fair to get stuck into him. No I don't like praising the mediocre but reading it does make me laugh thanks guys.

Already we are beyond expectations and again the media gods have admitted that they may have been wrong in their original accessments of the 2018 Eagles
Enjoy the moment. Isn that why we follow the game with the hope and expectations of the season ahead.
Have fun man, I know I am.
But if you a totally convinced that the 2018 Masten will destroy the club and their finals prospects, I suggest a letter to the coaching group will most probably get you the result you so crave.

Plenty of mediocre players with premiership medallions in the pool room. The Eagles even have a few, off the top of my head - Shane Bond, Steven Armstrong, David Hynes, Karl Langdon.
To win a premiership you have to make the best of the resources available to you. Jeez just last year Richmond had a few players who have been Masten like whipping boys.

Yeah you're much harder on Redden than Masten

Ok so great win, we shouldn't make any changes unless forced to do so with injury. Stability breeds success so lets back em in. But just as a bit of fun these are the ins and outs I'd make.

Outs: Masten Nelson Redden Duggan
Ins: Parto Cole Hutch Schofield/ Ains (depends on match ups)

Maybe a bit harsh on Redden but don't think we should play him and Hutch in the same team and I think we may need Hutchs tagging ability against Geelong. Still I'm not convinced we need unforced changes after such a good win.

Good effort by the boys Geelong are too good to keep down for 4, we only got back on top once Ablett went down. Redden and Masten deserve to be dropped on todays performance but who do we bring in for them? Nic Nat most influential ruckman in the game just ******* awesome.

Yeah jettas another one who i thought was down. Stats don't always tell the tale , I thought hutch played better than the three of them and you don't drop kids for not dominating you back em in, senior blokes who don't perform at an adequate level should be dropped. I'd be playing youth ahead of some of these guys, we may lose a few more games but we would be better off long term. Masten and Redden looked like hopeless witches hats when Geelong were on neither impressed me unfortunately.

The difference is that the the guy who Sandi hit wasn't concussed out of the game.

Bottom line, if you bump someone and they get concussed you're gorn.

I hope he doesn't, but would be staggered if he didn't miss a week for that.
The act has to be wrong in the first place. If a player gets tackled and is concussed, there isn't an automatic suspension.

The whole idea of them working backwards from the severity of the injury to determine the suspension is hopefully gone this year, but also has to have a suspendable offence tied to it in the first place.

As it turns out, they clashed heads.

The footage showed a decent view and the bump was laid perfect and was still in play. A good result all round.

Has been told to put on weight which he has.....so no one is pushing Masto around anymore .......inside running bull .

I hope anyway !!
Opposite, he dropped 4kg to go back to his strengths :thumbsu:

He looks a tad quicker now, less jogging for high kms and more sprints.

To say he is the same is pigheaded & foolish.

I think what he is trying to say is that Masten is still very soft and has zero physical presence. Which is true. That's not to say Chris isn't doing ok presently, but it's these same issues that have largely been the bane of his career over the duration of it.

This is why we as supporters are a bit more forgiving with guys like Nelson and Duggan, because even though they undoubtedly have their limitations, at least in a physical sense they are prepared to have a crack.

Masten has spent the bulk of his career being physically rag dolled, knocked off the ball easily and never being able to stick a tackle. Presently he is being largely excused because:

-he is playing well (for him)
-the team is winning

Well will review this sentiment if results start to go against us and the stats line starts to read:

C Masten:
19 touches
19 uncontested possessions
0 tackles
0 score assists

For the sake of our side, I truly hope he continues to give a good account of himself. But would I bet on it? Probably not
