I think this thread will be bumped in years to come. Maddison will be a player. The same uproar occurred when Clarke got the nod in 04. Shaun Marsh was another debated selection, I'll back in the selectors on this one.

how max klinger hasn't gotten a game at some point i'll never know

It must keep him up at night.

Going back a generation, guys like Jamie Cox, Jamie Siddons, Stuart Law (even Brad Hodge to an extent) could at least think "well at least it's an amazing team that I couldn't get into."

But Klinger was considered too old 5 years ago... since then we still don't have a set opening pair, he's still been hammering runs, and the question of age became moot when they picked Voges.

His will be another of those Zoehrer like cases where the actual reasons/accusations about why others didn't want him are muttered in hushed tones after he's gone from the game.

Maybe Patterson getting out twice playing back to spin (LBW Holland both innings) was a consideration given we're playing in spin friendly Adelaide?
Adelaide wouldn't spin that much on day 6

However he does need to work on his technique. Both times he shouldve gotten outside the line. You can't survive playing back on raging turners.

That being said maddinson ... has done absolutely nothing to earn a spot. If he fails people will be coming hard for his head. Given the treatment of mennie & ferguson it will be hard to justify keeping him in. And then what happens? We can't have a revolving door test team. Selectors need a plan & they're not gonna get a long term plan until they get the right people appointed. Not blokes seeing out a contract or a temp replacement.

Whilst the panic button has been mashed mercilessly - if indeed the imprimatur is to revamp the side - I can understand all of the decisions... except one.

Matthew Wade FFS. Unless he is batting in the top 6 and Handscomb (not much chop as a keeper) is keeping - he has no place near the Test side.

Nevill can keep and at least valued his wicket - and if you want to take a punt like Renshaw, bring in Whiteman.
Wade's only 28 (about to be 29) that's young enough for a test spot.

  • Nic Maddinson. 24. Left-hander, averages 38 from 58 first-class games for NSW. Played two Twenty20 games for Australia in 2013. Has made two tons and an 86 in the Shield this season.
Cricket Australia really trying hard. He's only made 1 ton this season... The only time he scored 2 tons in a season is 2010-11.

One of these things is not like the other

To be fair to Marsh he did eventually seem like he was turning it around though, shame about his body.

Can't be stuffed piddling through 61 pages.. anyone noted Sam Whiteman or Alex Carey as alternate choices to Wade?
I like Carey. Hes done a lot right but he hasn't even played 1 full year of shield.

Hes got plenty of upside now that he's focusing solely on cricket. Should have plenty of improvement & he's already at a high level.

We just need to get the elephant in wade out of the room. I hope he does better but he will have no leeway if he misses chances. It's definately not a pick n stick option. Carey & whiteman keep performing & they could get their xhance soon enough

How did Nevill go from potentially moving up the order to persona non grata in the space of two Tests?

But too old to learn how to keep wickets. The guy is a crab.

He "might" be good enough to bat in the top 6 - in which case that is both an indictment on our batting depth and highly unlikely turn of events for our selectors.

Test cricket should be treated like a Grand Final, where you pick your best available team every time to win every time. We shouldn't be picking guys based on whether they might still be around in 5-10 years time.

I agree with you 100%. It's clear the selectors have there eye on the ashes already. They will be happy to draw against the pakkis

The more I think about it and laugh about it, it seems like that realistically Renshaw is the only batsman who got picked based on their performances this round, it seems like they had their team and nothing changed, other than maybe poor form of those they dropped allowing them to justify it.

Handscomb scored 215 sure, but he was already favoured by most to take the next middle order spot, Maddinson was ****ing shit but scored a hundred last match so obviously already decided they wanted him. Sayers did nothing in the first innings (haven't seen 2nd innings figures) and Wade failed in his only hit. Plus Mennie wasn't even given a chance to play.

Also interesting that Holland out bowled both Lyon and O'Keefe but Lyon survives because O'Keefe is injured, Holland couldn't do any worse than Lyon atm...

So for all the talk of this big round of Shield cricket, it made no difference other than maybe making it easier to drop 4 players who went back and continued to fail.

what has that got to do with anything? I like all the other changes (except Maddinson) and wanted changes. There wasn't really any need to change the wicketkeeper because it is so important during the subcontinent to have a good wicketkeeper. It is hard enough to get 20 wickets over there let alone getting 23/24 because Wade keeps dropping chances.

Might have a point if it wasn't for the fact that Nevill is hardly perfect and drops a couple himself...

Fact is his keeping is suffering and his batting is abysmal and with only 1 other realistic option in the country, Wade it is!

The first thing you do when it goes **** up is try to make yourselves hard to beat. We were still shite under Nasser Hussain but the least you can say is that he did that and by doing so paved the way for further improvement down the line. From what I've read, some of these selections have that aim in mind. Handscomb appears to like to bat all day and, going just by reputation admittedly, Renshaw can drop anchor if needs be. Wade's recall I can understand - he's the inferior keeper but has proved himself able to play significant knocks in Tests and, let's face it, the batting needs strengthening. On top of that Smith clearly favours him in terms of character, and having the confidence of the skipper counts for a lot. The one selection that doesn't fit with this is Maddinson who, again going only from what I've read, seems to be something of a flake. Having said that, sometimes a hunch comes off: Marcus Trescothick had a decent but unspectacular first-class record, and a reputation for giving his wicket away, but Fletcher backed him and he did extremely well for us.

You have to feel for Ferguson and Mennie, who may never play Test cricket again. As someone posted earlier though, in Mennie's case particularly the selectors have basically put their hands up and said 'yep, we nawsed it up in the last Test and we're not going to compound that by picking a bloke again out of sympathy.'

They should pick wade as a specialist bat at 6 and neville at 7. Wade can bat well and nevill can keep well, maddinson cant do either well.

My only real problem with that is that in March we are touring India. Last tour of India was not kind to Wade. Was easily taken care of by their spinners.

On the other hand in the recent tour of Sri Lanka Peter Nevill averaged 8.50 as he was left in a trance by Rangana Herath and the other spinners (5 of 6 dismissals to spin).

To me that means in the immediate short term we cannot play both. Both aren't great against spin and both are the only wicket keeper candidates right now. We can't take two walking wickets to India and for the next 4 tests you'd be hoping to be selecting players who may be in line to feature on that tour.
