Hughes for Watson - get him out of T20 mode before he gets in it
Sayers for Harris - balance of the attack is good, he's a better fit to replace the two being taken out than Faulkner, Bollinger or Coulter-Nile

Location: Adelaide. Hmm. No way would they replace Harris with someone out of the extended squad.

And would Hughes for Watson be purely based on Watto missing with injury?

Watto does look quite unfit at the moment.

Bailey will probably finish out the series and see what happens after that. He'll struggle in SA if he plays. But so will most our bats.

I'd rest Harris and Watto. We badly need Harris in SA fit and firing. My 75 year old grandmother moves better than Watson at the moment. He's obviously really battling.

A Watson injury may be the saving grace for Bailey. It might also give Hughes a crack at number 3 and if he succeeds they may put Watson down to 6. While I still think it might be a bit early for Hughes to come back I wouldn't be totally against it. I'd hate to see him come back and bat at 6 again. Saying that, I'd much prefer him to come in for Rogers when he retires.

We really don't have a middle order batsman knocking down the door. Cameron White has probably been the best of them this year.

There's no Shield before we head to SA and if we don't see Bailey as the best option over there, there is no way in which he should be selected. Therefore, if you're looking from a preparation for South Africa POV, surely a test match would be better than the BBL.
Ok that changes things tbh but IMO every minus Clarke will struggle against Steyn, Philander and Morkel. They are without question the best team since we won 5-0 in the ashes and Steyn and Philander are the best two bowlers in the world without question. Kallis is a huge loss but whoever we bring in we struggle IMO.

They are an outstanding team, but you still pick your best team. I'd be very disappointed if we were to hide Lynn or another young batsman, as we did to Hughes last year.

Our bowling is fine. Our batting is pretty average (Clarke, and maybe Warner excluded)

We need to do what we did in the old days. Find a young player with the right technique and right temperament and give him a year in the team to set himself up

I'm really not sure who, as i don't really follow shield cricket. But find me 2-3 players like that. Rogers doesn't have long. Watto still can't not get injured. Bailey has not done much, but would be ok with giving him SA to see if he can do something

Warner
young Opener
young No.3
Clarke
Bailey (give him the SA tour, and if he still fails, seeya)
Smith (has done enough for now)
Haddin
Bowlers

I'm not saying we shouldn't pick our best side, just that I think whoever it is they'll struggle. If the batsman we pick is good enough they'll do ok, if they don't they should get more opportunities (unless it's Bailey and he fails again.)

Replace the entire 11 with our youth squad, England wouldn't beat Zimbabwe at the moment :D

How is Mitch Marsh travelling? Haven't been following but the next test seems perfect to give someone like him a taste and see how he handles it. I'm firmly in the boat of trialling young players rather than these gap fillers that aren't exactly setting the world on fire.

Rogers (don't rate him at all and I don't think he should be in the team but he is making runs so can't drop him)
Warner
Watson
Clarke
Smith
Haddin
Marsh
Agar
Johnson
NCN
Lyon

Harris and Siddle get a rest. Extra spinner (depending on how Agar is playing and the pitch) and NCN to make his debut.

2 pace bowlers, 2 medium pacers and 2 spinners and a deep batting lineup.

Winning 5-0 would be nice but an eye should be on the future.

Interesting perspective on Rogers. We should definitely replace him with a player you rate who isn't scoring runs.

Agar is next to no chance and there is no need or rush to pick Marsh.

I like Silk well enough, just not yet. He's a prospect.

The cupboard is fairly bare, if North gets back then he could be the next short term opener after Rogers.

I don't see why we have to put a timeframe on Rogers. In some respects he is in career best form. Just let him play.

I like North and hopefully he will come in to calculations (even for the middle order) based on what Rogers has done.

At this point on form the only young batsman I would consider is Lynn. Doolan before him though.

I like Lynn more than Doolan, but it depends what position they would be filling.

Doolan for top 3, Lynn for lower.

Rogers can still hang around for a bit I think. Hopefully long enough for Silk who is only 1-2 years away from it in my view.

If the next batsman in line (according to the selectors) is someone with experience like a North, Hughes or White, no change. If they feel it's someone like Lynn or Maddinson then they should come in for Bailey.
