Unofficial Preview Changes for week one of Finals (Out: Madgen, Murphy, Ox : In: Treloar, Howe, Goldsack)

For me the biggest selection decision revolves around the defence and how many returning players we bring in. All of Moore, Howe, Appleby and Goldsack may make it back. But I think we need to be careful about how many we bring back in at once. Howe is a cert. But does Madgen get replaced by Goldsack or Moore? Do we bring in Apples to free up Crisp and Maynard and allow Greenwood to tag? It's a big decision to make.

Rioli killed us last time I can see Apples taking that match up if he were to come in but I don’t think he will come back

I’m torn on Moore. He definitely improves us but I’d think he’d have to play VFL next week to be a chance but then you’d be risking him in a final 2nd game back which makes me nervous.

We need the VFL team to keep winning. You’d think they would want more than 2 games into the Sack before considering him but we might not have a choice.

Maybe play both him and Moore next week and hope they win. Promote Moore for the first final and if he does break down then we have 3 games into the Sack or bring back Madgen for the semi.

Goldsack looked a bit proppy and slow yesterday. He would have to make a dramatic improvement in the VFL final next week to play in the qualifying final. Appleby played well yesterday. He puts pressure on Oxley. I would keep playing Murphy in the senior side. His kicking which is generally good was off yesterday but he'll continue to prove. We have no chance of winning a premiership without Treloar or Moore. Treloar comes into the the first final. We roll the dice with Moore and play him in the second final. My changes for the qualifying final:
In: Howe, Treloar
Out: Oxley, ???
In the mix at some point: Appleby, Moore (second or third final if we make it to replace Madgen)
I’m on board with you here.
I also think people forget Goldsack was struggling as a senior player anyway and I think Murphy’s been good.
In: Howe, Treloar.
Out: Oxley, ? (Aish, Varcoe)

For me it's Howe and Apples, plus Treloar if he can go full tilt at training and pull up fine.

In my 54 years of barracking for the mighty Pies I have seen finals campaigns completely shattered by placing faith in unsound players.

Can't afford to be rotations down through selecting questionably fit players.

IMO, it centres around the midfield. I think it’s odds on we’ll be up against WC because I just don’t see them dropping this one. If we breakeven in the midfield, as we did yesterday, we lose. Therefore we have to win and win well in the centre of the ground to nullify their fwds and give ours every opportunity.

What swings it for me from the last time the two teams met is simply out Gaff and in Treloar. If that comes to fruition I think we can get them because the rest will take care of itself.

Treloar is a wild card that can change the course of the finals - if we get him back fit and hungry we are in it up to our eyeballs.

I tend to lean the other way. If the medical staff declare them fit I would consider them regardless of past injury history. We're likely to be playing West Coast and I think we need to respect the Kennedy and Darling combo. I can't see this weekends defensive group getting it done on those two. I really hope Kennedy doesn't get up for it.

It's a fascinating scenario quick and I can see the merit in your viewpoint, those missed opportunities haunt me still and playing even superstars not fully fit in finals gives me a bad case of the screaming heebee jeebees lol

Yeah that midfield battle is critical. We need to win enogh of it to choke their supply. We need to slow their ball movement down. That will go a long way.

I do still think that we need to respect their forward group. Even if they get limited supply they're good enough to take their chances. We are seriously undermanned back there and will need some re-enforcements. I'm really interested in what that will look like and how far it goes.

And fair enough too. I like your views on it John because it provides another perspective and gives pause for thought. I'm just glad i'm not the one having to make the decision.

The romantic in me want's to give Goldy his chance - like Trelaor he has worked his @rse off to get back.

I wouldn't be calling for the selectors heads if he got the nod because I see what they are trying to achieve and it's all a matter of probability with his history - a toss of the coin perhaps.

But I would be afraid, I would be very worried indeed.

In: Howe
Out: Murphy

I know not quite like for like, but I think Howe can play tall or small and Oxley and Madgen have done ok. I reckon they will hold Treloar back until it is all on the line. No way Goldsack plays off only 2 games in the VFL. Stability is a definite preference.

In : Appleby, Howe, Treloar
Out : Oxley, Murphy , Aish

Murphy & Aish are good players but just not cutting it for the moment. Think Murphy could turn into an amazing half-back, but it isn’t his time. I don’t think Aish is suited to the half-back role. He needs to replace Mayne or Phillips, and unfortunately that won’t happen.

Defenders :
Langdon, Madgen , Appleby
Maynard, Howe, Crisp

Greenwood is the 7th defender.

Madgen only stays in because he’s taller/stronger than Murphy.

Can anyone confirm whether Moore and Goldsack are even being considered? I just get the feeling they aren't realistically in contention.

It's possible that Aish may have missed his chance altogether, I like him as a player but perhaps his time has come and gone.
