Out
long bombs from the kick-in
scrambled kicks from stoppages

In
more movement of players presenting to guys kicking
directed passes around the 30m long mark
tighter playing of players

Its only the first round, and while we can nit-pick individual players, i would prefer to leave this group to play another game or two together, before starting to rotate and introduce other guys. Now the dilemna is King, because White did his job quite well. Tho will say that Connors can be left of as the sub, and Post be put on it if ready, or if not, McDonald or Derickx. When Graham went down, we were looking like being exposed (even with the lack of Carltons Talls playing) I reckon Sub should always be a 1st or 2nd yearer, to give them part game time.
So, no real change to list. King can wait another week.

The problem is that it was our 'stars' who were off tonight...many of the 'fringe' players did reasonably well.

Nahas was creative and had a big impact in the 3rd and was one of the ones who made that happen.

Rance was big, strong and tough in defense...Yeah, he's a deer in the headlights when he gets the ball, but as a big/strong stopper, he was good.

White...Beat Yarran hands down.

I was pleasantly surprised by Nahas. He did what Edwards usually does, and offer some creative play and continuity. When we stopped and propped, we allowed the Blues to restructure their defense.

Rance was another that has improved a little. Still not sure whether he'll make the grade, but he's not being beaten in the air as much. Tho i think he should tackle with his head. If he doesn't knock them off the feet, he'll at least get a free. Rance and the Goo pretty similar, in some regards.

Anyone suggesting we drop Nahas, White or Rance did not watch the game properly and has let their biases get in the way.

We looked the best last night in the 3rd when we bombed it long - we broke their zone and gave Riewoldt the best chance, but it was also Jacko, Gus and Morton on the end of them a few times. Hence why I think we need Tucky in the side; he's useful on the end of them and bombing them in.

I guess King will come in, maybe for Helbig. Other than that I doubt there'll be changes.

Where did Dimma say Tuck won't be in til round 3-4? And why did he say that?

Is Rance in trouble for his hit on Waite?

What the **** is it with the Nahas haters in some of the threads? Give the little fella a break.. Was one of our best last night.
If he keeps this form up he'll be in our best 22 every week.

Very very impressed with Batchelor, does not look like a rookie out there at all. Conca and Helbig too:thumbsu:

Houli I absolutely love in our team even though he was just ok last night. The WOG comment was uncalled for. Grigg is a ball magnet.. They both should only get better as our season progresses and this gameplan comes together..

All I can say is that our membership slogan "The Tiger is Stirring" well that is what is actually happening!:thumbsu: So happy with our performance and we will only get better.

For me:

Out: Edwards, McGuane

In: King, Gourdis

Sometimes it's only when you open your mouth that people realise how stupid you are.
Thanks to the no nothing negative drag arse whinger bitches calling themselves Tiger fans for outing yourselves, again.:thumbsd:
p.s. how good is jack and young rance has arrived i do believe, and if he cleans up waite one more time there could be a bronze statue in it!

WOWEEE!!
It doesn't take long hahahaha I love it.
My own two bobs worth,On Rance I thought he was quite good, he's no star and never will be but there is a bit of a third Kellaway brother about him back there and that will do me every day of the week.Rather that than an uncompetitive down hiller at this stage of our development. He's also clearly on the improve.
Again Nahas is what he is,but thats what we are too.At least he brings an energy and a willingness to create much like Matty White.Definately room for King.I can't believe I'm saying this but I'm really looking forward to seeing him back.I can't get round 22 last season out of my head where he's concerned.
Edwards was a bit lost, but do you burn a bloke after one game? He might be the one.
Perhaps Helbig will make way but I find it unlikely. Not a lot to be gained by kicking him in the guts at this stage'and the game would have been a blur to him.Was seriously impressed with his hardness though.Welcome aboard young fella i say if that's how he rolls.
I agree that we miss Tuck desperately at times, but can understand where they are coming from. The only problem is his apparent newer version in Grigg is probably just as bad in that area.I'm worried about him.And Houlli.
I think maybe at this stage In. King
out. Edwards

After his game last night, what do you think Leppas response to this would be:)

I cringe every time hes got the ball deep in the backline.

Id like to see Gourdis back there without McGuane just to see how that would work. Rance I agree has arrived but needs to work on his kicking.

Great shut down job last night. Only 9 touches but 5 rebound 50`s, 8 1%ers and 88.89 eff.

Easily one of our best at a time when we were so under the pump back there.
More hope of me winning lotto Sat night than him being dropped.

His game was allright last night, but I just want to see Gourdis back there without McGuane.

For example, Batchelor is a rookie, and I feel more comfortable when hes got the pill down there, than McGuane.

Rance was actually pretty good tonight Tugga when it came to beating his opponents. His problem was not having the support around him which forced him to kick hurriedly which caused a turnover and a couple of times he was run down by Betts and he won't be on his own in that regard this season. Needs to learn to play to his limitations when it comes to taking off and trying to run the ball out and he'll be fine.

I'm happy for Rance to play the whole season in the 1's, and for us to make a judgement at the end of the year either way - keep or dump.

I agree he did a very good job in the contested ball situation, and won his fair share, although got beaten in a couple of marking contests, where he should've at least spoilt. But he made some horror errors when he had the ball in his hands. I can think of 3 off the top of my head.

1. Ran off Betts off half back, dodged an opponent and then was tackled by Betts (holding the ball) for a shot on goal. Terrible awareness not knowing Betts was going to tackle him. Just put his head down and thought I'll be right here. Noone else to blame for that.
2. A simple clearance 30m pass out of back pocket completely missed target, turnover. 2nd qtr I think.
3. Made a split moment decision in last qtr to take the kickout from a behind since he saw Martin was kind of in the clear on the 50m arc. Martin wasn't even looking, but he kicked to him. Robinson just jumped in and marked it.

I know others make mistakes as well, but he is one guy who, when he has the ball in his hands, I am willing to bet 80% of Tiger supporters close their eyes. I also know the backline was somewhat under siege at times, but that doesn't change the fact that his decision making and kicking are really quite bad.

If he can, as you said, "play to his limitations when it comes to taking off and trying to run the ball out", maybe he could make it.

As I said, happy for us to keep playing him, despite the pain, since he does do some things well. But if those deficiencies aren't gone by year's end, I think we should get rid of him. It's not simply a coincidence.

Last night in isolation, he wasn't our worst.

For mine...

OUT: Edwards
IN: King

If Helbig is dropped after one reasonable game, I will spew up!

DEVELOP THE KIDS!!!!

Guys

King is suspended for one more game.

Moore is injured.

Lots of areas of our game to be critical. Personally I was most disappointed with the rucks. They had 3 jobs to do.

Contest the stoppages. (I saw at least 6 occassions where no one contested)
Drop back in defense to defend the long bomb (to Hampson)
Provide a long marking target when unable to clear the back-line.

Unfortunately I dont think we can make any changes in this department.

So for me its Astbury/Helbig out, Thursfield and one of Post/Miller in.

Only player I'd say is in danger is Edwards. Can't believe people are bagging Nahas after that game. Was in our best half dozen.

Wouldn't be too surprised if there was no change for next week, but I'll say Edwards out for Tuck.

No Change.

Edwards is most likely a one off.
Helbig needs games to adjust to the tempo.
Nahas attacked, broke lines, & tackled - he's staying.
Astbury moved a bit stifly - so maybe his body is still adjusting to his increased size over the offseason.

no hes not. oly suspended for round 1

It's really odd the differing opinions on Rance and Nahas.

FWIW, I stood near the grog squad and there were constant calls of "Rance is on the take!", "Someone give Rance a Carlton jumper!" and "Carlton are winning because it's 17 onto 19!". I understand that the Grog Squad is not necessarily the font of all knowledge, but worth pointing out that many were unhappy with his game last night.

Actually it was comedy gold listening to some of the comments, especially when people get it wrong, for example, someone calling a Carlton player a "Scapegoat" about a million times, which is hardly an insult... Some of the remarks directed at Waite were pretty funny too.

I thought Astbury struggled down back, but when moved forward did ok. Given that he plays a swingman type role I thought he did ok and definitely not one to drop.

Tell you what Gives me the shits.
We put blokes on a pedestal and others just cop it for turning up. We all know Rances limitations but if that's what the grog squad thought then footy is a wierd looking game through the bottom of a plastic cup.
I wonder what they thought of cotchins first 45 min though???
Not a bad word would be said and in any case they probably thought he'd had it 25 times.

Cotchin had it 22 times !
21 in the last 3 quarters , IIRC , 17 in the last 2 quarters !
He was very bad early and further evidence he ain't an outside mid , and how much easier it is for outside mids to be tagged !

I was referring to the first 45 minutes. He was as bad as anyone out there, but no way known would he cop it from anyone.

Half of you guys are dead set knobs. How many of you are stating your opinions after watching on TV or looking at the statistics after the game?

McGuane played great, crashed packs, made plenty of spoils and hes opponents didn't do much while on him.

Same goes for Rance, I think everyone is forgetting how many times the ball went inside Carlton's forward 50... If it wasn't for our backline we would of lost by 10 goals.

And the biggest laugh of all is all the Nahas bagging... take him out of the game in the second quarter and add 4 goals to carlton's half time score.

I froze my ass off so I'm entitled to an opinion. :p

What was apparent last night was Carlton's speed in general, their mids and forwards just broke into space far too often. St Kilda aren't the quickest side in the league by any stretch though they are excellent at contested ball, we need to do what Carlton did to us last night and just run and run and run. Our last 2 games against St Kilda have been somewhat close where at times we've had a chance to win it. An upset on the cards? Who knows...
