AHERN I think will play but I figured it was going to be 9 or 10. Him not playing vfl and last week up there I think are signs he's in

No chance. It's such an excellent story (think Sammy Wright last week but throw in the fact that it's a debut) and there's no way we are throwing away that potential media coverage. If it hasn't been announced, then it's not happening.

Usually yes, but I don't think that's the case this week.

I reckon both clubs are playing shifty buggers with their starting 22.

Good point....didnt think about that.

But it is still only Thur too. And as Snake said above.

Signs still feel stronger to me that he will play. I think would be more in the coaches and fitness staff hands than the media.

Brad's keeping his cards close to his chest, even if that means sacrificing a feel good story about the club until the 11th hour, either way, the Paul Ahern story will be talked about ad-nausuem on the day and after, so it really doesn't matter. Also himself and everyone around has kept Ben Jacobs' targets even more obfuscated this week, and the team selection so far is also another curveball thrown with a mix of smalls + talls.

He's being a real shifty bugger this week.

Richmond have had the most frees paid against this year - for good reason but the umps should've paid far more. Watch them live and you see many of their small/mid sized players constantly block taller opponents around marking contests and all players off the ball especially as they spread. Will be interesting to see how we counter this - expecting a physical game.

Adelaide game will give 'some' insight

For those who haven't watched Richmond too much this season, I've watched every second of them save for the last quarter against Brisbane.

To explain their defence in the simplest terms, it has two layers - one around the ball which aims to force the turnover immediately. If that doesn't work they want you to kick long and high where their tall backline (and it is tall) mops everything up.

There is a more in-depth analysis on The Shinboner for those who are interested, including the options we have to move the ball on them: https://theshinboner.com/2018/05/10/how-richmond-tigers-play-pressure-game-style-the-shinboner/

It means any strategy has to be sustainable from siren to siren, which is why I believe a predominantly kicking-based style is the best way to approach moving the ball.

BANG!

Best write up yet.

These are the two options, match the small size of Richmond or play to our strengths and let our style be what they have to worry about.

To my mind we have talls that can play pretty small like thommo, Daw, wood, Waite - all have good tanks and can play on smaller players and be agile on a smaller ground like Etihad.

If Daw is floating across the back and we have Ahern, Clarke, Williams, Luke, Wright etc rotating down back and through the middle we won't be huge.

Likewise with Jy, Turner, Jz and Wood / Waite rotating up to the wing we will stretch their backs

FWIW I'd like to see Ahern debut.

Basically. We need to be at 100% to have a chance and I'd like to see us back in our style and strengths to forces Richmond to have to stop us

Tough but possible
Yeah some of Majs best highlights are against the tiggers. Love to see him fend dusty off at half back run through the middle and slot one from 50.

What do you all reckon? Are we a genuine chance? I really hope it’s at least close and we’re competitive.
We're in this up to our eyeballs, we'll get it done :D I am the superstitious sort though, wondering what sort of omens we can take out of the curtain raiser game since it is the same two teams ... hoping both can get up ;):):thumbsu:
