Brad agreed that back six were poor thought durdin should have played Tarrant played his worse game for a year. Don't think we have anyone in the twos who have what we need skilful outside runners, thought mountford was good.

In Durdin, Cunnington
Out Thompson, Mountford

Expect a ruthless selection commitee this year. We are gone. In the transition stage and we know what that means. Heads will roll.

Out: Mountford, Hansens, Hibberd,
In: Cunners, Durdin, Wright

No way should we drop Simpkin.

Simpkin was blowing mid way through the 2nd quarter.

He spent all year last year out with a broken leg. He doesn't have the tank to be a threat for four quarters.

Would love him to play in the midfield at VFL and get some of the footy to get his confidence up.

I don't want the club to pigeon hole him across half forward, which we seem to do with every bloody half decent draftee

Wright's footskills are desperately needed. Durdin needs to be a mainstay from now on. Cunnington is a no brainer

Yep noticed that as well. It is a worry as to what to do.

34 yo. Won't be here next year.

1.7. Including some absolute sitters.

Not good enough.

Services not required imo.

Take out Waite and put in Daw and we would have lost by a lot more.

Getting smashed by teams does nothing for the development of young blokes either

If Thompson isn't Dropped after that game then I have no faith in anyone in the match committee making the right choices for the club going forward

Watched him in the last part of the Bees game last week. He looked unfit and out of form then. Brad played the three older KPDs today because he aldready had a lot of youth coming in to the game. Unfortunately he and Lachie are not in any form - so it didn't help.

Both Durdin and EVW should be played. Will depend on form I suppose. Wright looked really handy - attacked every contest and used his skills to great effect. I hope he gets put straight back in.

Swallow - he's elite in some areas, but he fumbles and fcks up so many of his possessions (turnovers are catastrophic) and we should expect more from the ex-captain.

Ins first, because people focus way too much on whinging about the shit and not enough on what we can do to be better. Everyone tried their guts out today, our contested work was pretty good and our forward pressure often great, but four things really cost us. One was skill, particularly off half back and with set shots but just in general. The second was our pressure round the ball. Great early and in patches, but once the Weagles got a clearance at any point on the ground they were pretty much guaranteed an inside 50. Thirdly, we lacked spread from the contest. Too many of our guys got sucked in to stoppages and we had very little overlap run, except for a few notable passages down the middle. Interestingly, the times where we looked like a genuinely good football side were when we spread and linked up rather than bombing it long. Finally, our defense was shocking. Yeah there were a lot of inside 50s and even if they'd been good we probably would have lost, but thats got to be the worst I've seen our talls play together, spoiling each other, dropping marks etc. Yeah some of them were underdone, but that can't be an excuse for senior players. So to address this, our ins should be:

  • Cunnington: we desperately need his skill in tight, vision and experience in the middle
  • Wright (if fit): his kicking and run off half back would go a long way to fixing our lack of skill execution and linkup play when clearing from defense.
  • EVW (if Wright not fit): should play as a third tall rather than on guys like Toby Greene, looked really good on the midsized guys in the first 2 JLT games. His composure and ability both to defend and linkup would be an asset.
  • Clarke: his kicking is a concern, but the pressure he applies around the ball and his natural ability to link up and get to space would have been invaluable today. Our lack of spread killed us today and he brings that in spades.
  • Durdin: was fantastic defensively in the JLT. His marking is a bit of an issue, but he plays in front and to structures, plus he offers some fantastic rebound for a big bloke.
In terms of outs, there are some difficult calls here but ones that have to be made. One thing that I'm 100% sure of is that Scott Thompson needs to be dropped. He's been a great player, had a shocker which players have and I'm sure will play good footy for us again, however some of the things he did today are completely unforgivable, and a message needs to be sent. The way he dropped marks, jumped at shadows, missed tackles and ran under the ball was absolutely inexcusable for a senior player, and it needs to be made clear to all the young blokes that we have standards.

I've been a huge supporter of Sam Gibson, and thought that he was fantastic last year, however on today's performance I think it might be time to try something else. For the first time I can remember, Gibbo looked tired. I think his interrupted off season might have been a contributor, however without his endurance he simply isn't able to perform the role he's been so good at. Didn't do any damage at all offensively, struggled to get to positions and was useless defensively, this might be the end for a guy who has been a better than solid player and an incredibly underrated North Melbourne person.

Mitch Hibberd really struggled today. Its tough coming from less intense footy to the AFL but he was a liability in defence and, while I expect him to have a long and successful career at North, I think there are elements of his game he needs to work on before being ready to make the jump. Similarly, Dec Mountford failed to have any impact on the game and, while he'll be better for the experience, needs to work on his game before making the jump. Mostly, finding the footy is Dec's biggest challenge, I'd love to see him really break open the game at VFL level and use that incredible pace and drive through the midfield before he takes the step up to AFL.

So, this is the 22 I'd play against Geelong next week. Looks significantly stronger imo:

B: McDonald- Tarrant - Hansen
HB: Wright - Durdin - Williams
C: Atley - Dumont- MacMillan
HF: Hrovat - Waite - Turner
FF: Thomas - Brown - Ziebell

F: Goldstein - Cunnington - Higgins

B: Simpkin, Clarke, Preuss, Swallow

Hasn't seemed to bother the GWS kids too much.
Crap argument and you know it.......totally different scenario to our football club. One thats been established for over a 130 odd years against one that been formed (for commercial reasons) with rules and assistance that have very appeasable from the governing body.
